3" model 60 vs 3" sp101
I own and carry a 3" 60 pro. But I have always kinda wanted a 3" sp101.
Do any of you own both? If so, do you like one over the other? Doesn't have to be the pro model.
Every one. Look at a sp101it doesn't look as "finished" as the 60. And the trigger seems alot heavier. But I have shoot my 60 alot over the years and I don't remember how heavy the trigger was on it when it was new
Thanks

Recently I almost bought a nice used SP101 on 'impluse' (4" I believe) - price was right apparently because it was gone the next day! I was impressed with it and this one had very nice finish and action. Must have been a reason for it going so quickly as I shortly thereafter got a Mod 60 no dash 2" which I really like. I'll admit the 60 has a much nicer finish and action but being from 1972 may have something to do with it. The 60 is also incredibly accurate with 17 +/- yard 2" groups.

I have two 60-10s and just bought an older SP-101 in .327 Federal last week.
Never did care for the SP as all the ones I've tried had horribly heavy DA trigger pulls. This one is very good.
The finish seems on par with the 60s but is a little less "graceful"...
Sights...the SP is only adjustable for windage vs fully adjustable for the 60s.

I bought both at the same time years ago. The Ruger went away rather quickly while the S&W stayed until I decided to replace it with an enclosed hammer model. I have little interest in Ruger revolvers based on my experience with that SP101.

Have both; like both. But my S&W is a M-60-4 .38 and the Ruger is a .357. I wouldn't want the S&W in .357. Too much of a good thing. The Ruger handles recoil better and is probably more durable, especially if shot a lot with full loads.
My Ruger was bought about 2012 and the finish is better than some, I guess, and overall cosmetics are on par with many S&W's. Better than the frosted look finish Smiths.
It's much easier to find replacement grips that fit an M-60. Same applies to the larger GP-100. I think Ruger made a design error in not using a conventional grip frame on their DA's after they dropped the Six line.
The better trigger makes the S&W easier to shoot really well in SA fire. May not matter if shooting at a man, but does when shooting at a snake head or a bunny. That said, if you concentrate and pull the trigger carefully, the SP is a very accurate gun. And it lets a backpacker or hiker tote .357 power in a compact revolver.
I really want to have both and use them as I think the situation favors.
BTW, the SP has a heavier trigger pull than does my GP-100.

You guys are nicer than me. You say the Ruger is "less graceful"; I say it is "more clunky."
Clunky:
1. Awkwardly solid, heavy, and outdated.

Without spending a lot of money for a GunSmith as with SW revolvers, simply replace the rebound (trigger return spring) with a lighter one from Wolff springs. Other places sell springs but they are all Wolff anyway,
NOT the hammer spring. It is so easy to do especially on a Ruger, and costs a few bucks. Makes a world of difference. This is for general shooting/self defense not rapid fir comp shooting,

I've owned both. A 3" SP101 and a 3" 60-15. For shooting magnum rounds I liked the SP101 better due to the extra weight dampening recoil a little better. The 60-15 is more refined and has a much better trigger (stock springs) than the SP101 even after a spring kit was installed in the SP101. I was much more accurate with the Smith.
The SP101 went down the road, the Smith is still with me and so shall remain.

I must say that I think you're missing the boat, by judging ALL Ruger's by one gun (not even to mention judging based on an SP model).
I understand that Rugers might not be your thing (all the more for me, thanks!), but I strongly suggest that you might try a Security/Service Six model and a GP100 before making such a rash decision.
And i hate to tell you, but S&W makes a few lemons from time to time also, and I'd hate to be the one to judge ALL S&W's based on one lemon.

I have a 3" SP-101 in 9MM and a friend has a 3" S&W model 60. I enjoy shooting them both. Both excellent revolvers IMHO, but I much prefer the adjustable sights of the S&W......ymmv
BTW, age and use does improve J-Frame triggers. I have a 20+ year old 640, a 642 probably 6-7 years old and recently got to shoot a brand new S&W 642. The oldest gun had the lightest and smoothest trigger, followed by the 6-7 year old gun, with the new gun way behind as to DA pull weight. Smooth, but significantly heavier than the older guns, all with standard factory springs......

I've handled a few GP100's over the years and took a look at the Ruger LCR when it came, but had issues short stroking the trigger. Even more so than I did with the SP101 IIRC. About the only revolvers I'm interested in anymore are snubs.

+1. A Wolff spring set on my 3" SP101 made all the difference. I prefer it over the S&W and it is my go-to fishing/hiking buddy.
