The wife and daughter gave me $ 750.00 for my Xmas & Birthday gift's Today I bought a Taurus M65 4" SS M 6 shot .357 Magnum. for $ 473.99 total. I was going to buy a S&W 686 at a cost of $ 790.00 .I decided to save the $ 276.01 and wait till I save enough money to buy a S&W 586. next.

Default I won't argue with the Marine Corps.

I bought a new Taurus Model 82 S in March last year. 4" heavy, full under lug barrel, matte blue in 38 Special+P. Didn't like the rubber stocks at first, but I got used to them. At 36.5 oz. it will make a great club if the need arises. Frame is just a little larger than a K and it shoots great. $384.11 including tax & transfer fee. Really easy to shoot and accurate. I think Taurus makes good firearms. Also thanks for your service MCorps0311.

Although I'm a real made in America fan, I'd be interested in your comparison between your other Smith's and the fit & finish of the Taurus.

All of my more modern guns are Stainless/ Its blue compares to a model 28.-2. Doesn't compare to some of my bright blue guns. Don't see any manufacturing grrrs or burrs. Action is as tight and smooth as any of my low round count guns, Not as smooth as some of my older guns.

I bought it for a carry gun and to see if it could be reamed to 45. It can not. I shot it quite a bit and liked it. Didn't ever shoot it beyond 25 yds. My 431 is a fixed sight and hits to point of aim with 200gr hollow points. Decent groups for 3" double action. Found a deal on a used S&W 696 no dash with a great trigger, but, I really don't do any better with it than 431. Now, I have a 396 S&W. It isn't as smooth as either of the other 2 yet (I think it is getting better with some use).

I don't know if it is an exception and it is not of real recent manufacture, but it does everything I really want or need for a short, small big bore.

But, then notice that I could help but get a couple Smiths of similar configuration. Nothing like the "real thing"

Let us know how it performs for you. Some people swear by their Taurus while others swear at them.
The deal breaker for me of any revolver is whether it has a good da/sa trigger. If it needs a tow truck to pull the DA then it's a no deal for me.
Give us a good review pro/con of it.

I took one of their stainless 1911's in 38 Super in on a trade. The plan was to turn it at a gun show but decided to shoot it first. It shot well. I liked it. I kept it and started loading for it. My impression of Taurus has changed some based on that one experience. Guns and Ammo did a test recently on 10 different 9mm pocket style pistols. Only 3 completed the test sans any malfunctions. The Taurus 709 Slim was one of the 3 and had good accuracy. I might give one of them a spin.

Default I was in the same boat......

I wanted a 686 and had a budget more for a Taurus or Ruger. I'm glad you are happy with it.

Default gman51 - I like it.

I bought my Taurus 82 on 3-10-16 at our Academy Sports here in town. I have access to a lot farm, field, and woodlands of friends and relatives just a few miles down in Mississippi. I have put several hundred rounds through it since I bought it. The single action feels almost as good as my 357 Blackhawk. Double action pull is acceptable, a little stiff take up, but either it is smoothing up or I'm getting more used to it. My eyesight is not what it used to be, but I can put 6 shots of .38 +P REM. UMC 125 gr. JHP at 7--10 yards into a 10" paper plate (AKA MOPP) double action and sometimes cover them with my hand. I like it. I never expect stuff to always be perfect. I like to think it is better to be able to adapt to the situation at hand. I really like this gun. I been carrying it every day for a few months in a Hunter 1100-30 holster on my right hip where it belongs. Open carry is legal now in every state I've ever been in down here. Have no reason to ever leave FREE AMERICA. Hope I can make it another 65 years. It's real nice having a good woman and no pressure. In finishing my review??, the Taurus 82 does not weigh 16 oz, but it feels solid and recoil is no problem.

I can relate to the OP for his purchase. I had a similar situation several years ago when looking for a .22 revolver. Being a S&W guy, my intent was to pick up a new or used Smith but, locally they were few and far between and more than I wanted to pay. I was shown a Taurus 990 4" stainless at one shop and after some deliberation, I bought it. I have run countless rounds through it without a hitch. The action has smoothed nicely with use. It has proven to be both reliable and accurate. If my experience is indicative of Taurus quality, I am sure that MCorps0311 is going to be a happy camper.

Nice revolver, MCorps!! I know a lot of folks on this board know that I am indeed a Taurus fan. It's not because I am not a S&W fan---quite the contrary. Older Taurus guns fit my budget, especially since I got into .44 Special revolvers, and so far I have not had problem one with any of the 4 Taurus revolvers (3 in .44) that I now have. S&W guns are superb guns, but like I said before my budget just can't do the steep prices a lot of models command these days---wish I could afford them though, but I am happy to report I am quite content and satisfied with my Taurus purchases.

Congratulations and nice gun. I've had good luck with Taurus revolvers and sure don't look down my nose at them. One of the ones I had was an old (with wood grips) Model 65, with a 4" barrel. That was a NICE gun. I would have put it up against any Smith & Wesson I've ever owned. Same can be said for the 431 I had. Both of those guns were blue and the fit/finish was just great. They both shot just fine also.

There is a Taurus forum. My go to brands are S&W, Colt, and STI. However, there are a few Taurus models in the safe. They all perform well. The worst I can say for them is that they have poor resale value.

I found a Taurus Model 66 near me. It was blued, 4", looked good. The guy was asking $400 for it - I thought that as too much.

Maybe I am wrong....

That's about $50+ too much. They can be had new for around $450. The stainless seems to be about $100 more, based on a quick gb search.

I wish you good luck with it, but I am one of those that is not a fan of Taurus.

I bought my first in 1985 and my last in about 2000, a few were ok, most were not.

I've sold them all off, and as for me, I have no desire to ever buy anymore.

I will spend the extra money and buy S&W or Ruger as my revolvers.

I only have experience with one Taurus. I have a stainless Model 83 that I fell into and thought would be a good companion for my Model 15.

Looks great, functions great, but not very accurate. It's functionally accurate ("minute of bad guy") but not even close to being target worthy. I found out why. The cylinder throats are something north of .362 which is the largest pin gauge I have for .357 bore guns. It's been put aside for when I have time to experiment more with it to see if I can get it to shoot.

Oh well.

Suggestions, which you may not want or need, follow.

First, I suggest a mold, perhaps from NOE, that starts with 360- or 362- .

If that doesn't work, try reaming the forcing cone also, I usually use 11* (that's supposed to be 'degees', but my tablet isn't cooperating).

Take it as you will, no harm intended.

The advantage of buying a quality gun is that you often can get your money back, sometimes more. The problem with buying junk is that no one else wants it either. When you go to trade one in, the shop doesn't want it. You want nearly what you paid, but they can buy another at wholesale. Their profit margin is pretty good, but they don't sell many to gun owners. Their market is to people without a lot of experience, who say "they must be as good". So you expect to get maybe $100 less than you paid. He won't offer it because his wholesale price is even lower. What he does is offer you $100 less than his price. Then he knows it will sit till the cows come home.

They don't all consist of dependable home defense guns. Now that you own it, take it out and test it. Once, long ago, we went shooting nearly every weekend. One guy we knew heckled us for months to take him along. He had a Taurus to protect his family auto shop. And he brought along some ammo, like a box. So we commenced to shooting up our targets. He was there for a while, and I wasn't paying a lot of attention until one of my close friends was laughing. His shooting combined with his substandard equipment resulted in him often having at least one misfire per cylinder and sometimes multiple. He couldn't hit the target with any regularity, either. It didn't take him long to throw away the remains of his ammo. Out of the kindness of my heart I gave him a box of my reloads. He was reluctant to even try them, afraid it might damage his gun. In just a few minutes he tossed that ammo out and said he was going home.

The friend waited till the guy left, then went dumpster diving in the trash can. He was particularly interested in my reloads, identical to what he'd been shooting without incident. Then he fired all the factory ammo the guy tossed out, too. Pride prevented the guy from admitting it was his junk gun, not the ammo that he felt easy to blame. And he owned a gun that wasn't much of a threat to anyone.

You and everyone else has an obligation to function test any gun you're betting your life on.

Last month I sold my Taurus 66 for 300.
That's all he had.
Perfect shape and worth more, he got a good deal!

I wish the OP well with his new Taurus, but the anecdote of rburg above is more indicative of the brand, at least in my experience. FFL dealers in NYC, where handgun purchase authorizations are difficult to come by, refuse to carry Taurus.

Never forgot the 1989 review of the Taurus equivalent of the Model 10 service revolver. The reviewer fired 500 rounds of standard pressure .38 service ammo in the gun. He discovered at the end of the test that the barrel/cylinder gap had more than doubled... Never happen on a Model 10 under the same circumstances.
