My Italian Birthday Present! Its a shotgun!
So I was talking about starting to shoot sporting clays. I am more of a pistol and AR15 guy but there is a new sporting clays range in the area. I have shot some informal skeet and trap but was talking about the long learning curve getting into these shotgun games. I also lamented the cost of a quality gun which you can learn on, grow into yet not out grow too quickly.
My birthday was the other day and my wife presented me with this. It is a Beretta Silver Pigeon I O/U. Now I need to find a mentor/coach and grow into this nice gun. She did an excellent job picking out this gun. If I had been given carte blanche this is the gun I would have picked but she and a good friend came to the same conclusion with ZERO input from me.

You have a great wife. I would put an IC choke in the bottom barrel and a Mod in the top barrel, call a couple buddies and go try it out. Talk to the people that run the range and they will be able to recommend someone that may take you under their wing. Recommendation, buy a MEC 9000 loader, a couple bags of #8 shot, and your choice on powder. Sporting Clays can become addicting.

Congrats and Happy Birthday.
I'd be glad to teach you all I know about sporting clays but it might take you backwards.
I looked at the Silver Pigeon but settled on a Ruger Red Label.

When I did some research a while ago the Ruger was under consideration. From all accounts it is an excellent value.

Clays
I shoot Clays every week, weather permitting. You have an excellent shotgun to dust clays and a most excellent wife who provided you with that opportunity. Enjoy and appreciate both in the upcoming year.

Very nice!
When I turned 50, my wife and kids picked out a Browning Citori White Lightning for me.

Congratulations on your birthday and new gun. A Browning is ok but a Beretta is the best. A person has to be rich to afford enough shells to wear out a Beretta. Larry

I'm an National Sporting Clays Association Level I Instructor and I would love to see Kentucky, but with my schedule, that ain't happening anytime soon.
Seriously, contact the club and see if they have an Instructor available to show you the ropes. Check the NSCA website also. Otherwise, let the club know your new to the game, and they will put you with someone experienced who can show you the ropes.

My plan is to head on over and talk to them and get an instructor to work with me in the beginning so I don't pick up too many bad habits. I am looking forward to the new shooting hobby!

IMHO, as a 40+ year clay target shooter, I might suggest you spend a lot of time on a skeet field.
Predictable targets to develop solid fundamental skills of hitting
small targets that are not stationary, very consistently.
Sporting clay courses and the targets vary in presentation everywhere you may go,
and are far more challenging if your desire is to be 95%+ shooter.
You need to learn to walk before you can run.
Have fun on your journey, the Beretta is a fine choice,

HAPPY BIRTHDAY, AND CONGRATULATIONS. YOU ARE A LUCKY GUY. I LOVE RUGER GUNS, AND I AGREE THAT THEY ARE AN EXCELLENT VALUE, BUT THERE IS AN UNDENIABLE CHARM AND MYSTIQUE ABOUT BERETTA SHOTGUNS. I HOPE THAT YOU ENJOY YOURS.......

Great birthday gift! Great wife to get you that. I have a lot of Berettas, love them, and the one you have will work for whatever discipline you choose. When I was in scouts 50 years ago we shot skeet with .22 birdshot.
More recently i took it up again. I began with hand trap with an AL 391, moved to auto-trap and got a 686 Onyx. That gun set the hook for good.
I went for a lesson when I wanted to start sporting clays and the guy was great. He gave me the basics in about 15-20 minutes, and then spent the next hour teaching my wife, and it was supposed to be My lesson!
She loved it, learned a lot, and now we can go together. She does well.
Be patient and have fun. Happy birthday!
