Not sure how I overlooked this one....
This was hiding in a dark corner at my favorite LGS:
It's an Iver Johnson 16 gauge. Is this a date code?
Asking price was $100...got it for $60.
Best,
Charles

That looks like a great piece of history! It's a shooter, I'm guessing?

16 gauge has always been my favorite shotgun
I did a little research and the 4 letter code is actually the serial number. I.J. used letters during the 1940s through 1956.

Here's how the letters make up the serial #.
f i t c h b u r g x
1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 0
Your serial # would be 3040 = txcx

I like these old workhorse single shots. I have a Stevens in 16 gauge also. I think about all the game these oldies likely put in the pot over the years...Like the Model 10 of shotguns.

Congratulations OP.
Just think of the stories your Old Iver Johnson could tell???
I do believe my family has the matching shotgun to yours, except ours is a 410. Our version also has the electrical tape in almost the same exact spot on the forend stock as yours.

Was that a factory option or a later add on? Larry

Can only get close. All letter serial numbers were used 1940-1956.

My first gun is a .410 like that, from my grandfather. It's marked Diamond Arms Corp., but was, I think, made for them by IJ. Full choke. I killed doves and ducks with it. Grandfather found it effective on squirrels, too.
l
Guns like this are still used by Brazilian Indians deep in the jungle.
I can't turn off the Bold Type function. Sorry.

We stayed at a friend's cabin in North Georgia every summer when I was a kid, they had a single barrel 16 gauge that I'd shoot every time they'd let me.
Here's a 20 gauge, I keep it at our house in the mountains. Every place in the mountains is supposed to have one of these.
Regards,
turnerriver

I have one of it's Little Brothers, but, in 410 it shoots 2.5" shells only.
Mine has a serial number in numbers not letters so I guess, per post #4 was made after 1956.

^^^^^^^^ Maybe not. no letter suffix 1909-19
one letter suffix 1920-29
two letter suffix 1930-39
all letters 1940-56
unknown 1971-75
There are a couple places it could fit in.

My 410, from post 15, has the same makers stamp but has CHAMPION stamped under the Fitchburg, Mass line, the serial number just behind the trigger guard is 34981. No letters. My Dad bought it used at an auction in Hot Springs, Arkansas when I was a teen, probably about 1963, on a family vacation.

Here's a recently purchased 12 gauge Stevens. I'm thinking the tape must've been an option from the factory....

Turnerriver,
Now a 20 gauge is essential to round out my set!!!
The good thing is that almost any single barrel shotgun can be had in the $100 or less range. The Stevens 12 gauge above was $20!

My daughter has a Stevens or Savage (I forget), in 16. She's looking for a 410 to match it, she passed on a 12 as "too much like the 16." She collects early 20th century single shots. Anyway I'm authorized to grab her a 410 single for her if I find one for $100 or less.
