Default Brought Home My New GP100 .44 Special- WOW (Back to Ruger-AGAIN)

Wow is right. My dealer called and told me that my new GP100 was in so I ran over there at lunchtime and took possession.

Got home that evening and began to admire my newest purchase. Got to the front sight and low and behold, it is not even close to being installed right. There is a large gap between the sight base and the barrel. Take a look at the photos.

I called Ruger and they say they will make it right, which is SOP for them. My question is how on Earth can this lack of craftsmanship get through Ruger's QC dept.

You buy a new gun and you want to shoot it right away, not wait weeks for warranty repairs on a brand new revolver.

I feel certain that I will be pleased when I get it back....but WOW.

When I picked up the gun I was in a hurry, wouldn't expect this from Ruger. I also have a Redhawk .45LC/.45ACP and it is flawless. It also has the plunger type of front sight, wish the GP100 did too...

I will look at the Ruger forums for more info. Thanks!!

Looks like the dovetail wasn't machined deep enough.

To bad it's not a six shot .41 Special. That's something I'd actually buy.

Unbelievable that a sight like that would pass even a cursory inspection, let alone a full blown quality control inspection.

An above poster said this flaw is common on this model. Not a good start for a brand new model. Translation: There is no QC inspection.

A poster on a ruger forum showed pictures of his with the sight issue and a good deal of blood on the cylinder. The trigger guard edges were so sharp the test-firer apparently cut themselves. The question is, why wouldn't they clean the blood off the revolver?
Needless to say, it is on its way back to Ruger repairs.

I was at Ruger's booth at a distributor show and the one they had on display was as bad as that one. It was a little alarming that their display gun, which is supposed to sell me on buying some, was that poorly inspected. This kind of leads me to believe that they are building them this way for some strange reason

There aren't many pictures of those out there but every one I have seen has the same issue with the sight. Even the Ruger web site shows it, but you have to download the pic and then enlarge the sight. I hope that isn't their intended look.

I wonder how they are going to fix it? Remill dovetail and it will change your POA. The only thing I can figure out is to make a whole new sight that is the proper dimension.

I had one on order at my LGS. Then I found a 696 for sale here on the forum and chose it instead. Boy am I glad I did now. It's more money for sure, but it will hold it's value better too I believe. You'd think a new $650-$700 gun would be nicer than that! Looks like one good bump would knock it right off.

That doesn't bode well for Ruger.
I've always liked what they made. Something is wrong on at least that particular product line, and QC for letting it through in such numbers.

The Semi-auto pistols coming from the Arizona plant are still looking good. Just saw the Bill Ruger commemorative Mark IV/knife set at my LGS and it was beautiful. Must have issues in New Hampshire, though I had a GP-100 from that plant and it was perfect.

Looks like they may all be like this. They dropped the plunger (great design IMO) for cost I am sure. If you've ever fit a sight into a dove tail properly it can take some hand work with files to get it just right. Installing them the way these new guns are done allows the "assembler" to simply put the sight into the dove tail with no hand work. That's the Ruger way these days. And why not? They come out with a new model gun and people climb over each other to get one. And of course "send it back and Ruger will make it right" is the standard reply. Near the end of 2017 we will hear how Ruger sold even more guns than 2016 They should at least be putting a return call tag in the box with each gun.

They don't build guns anymore....they assemble them!

No, what the guy said was that the vast minority of new owners with a problem got on the internet and screeched a lot.

Until there is recall I wouldn't be too worried about it.

Default GP100 .44 spec.

There's a thread over on the Ruger forum dedicated to the new GP100. The photos are all of the SS version, but the front sights are consistently snug to the barrel. Go figure ?

Ruger called with an update today. Said they are going to replace the barrel and mill the sight in properly. Two week turn around.

Update when I get it back in my grubby paws.

Default You are not alone.

I just picked up my GP-100 44 spl this morning( my lgs recv'd / **frd the gun - I did not buy it from them) and it has the same issue as the OP......first new Ruger I have bought since the early 90's. Having cut my share of dovetails, fitted rear and front sights into them, it is hard to believe that they are sending these new revolvers out looking like that. Totally unacceptable, and disappointing.

I feel your pain! Sorta ruins the anticipation. It shouldn't happen, even with "mass produced" guns that we have to spend a goodly portion of our discretionary income for, (Or need to save till we can afford whatever it is we want.)
But, sadly, that seems to be the way of the world today, especially for those of us who just want a good, reliable gun out of the box, that doesn't need fixing. It looks like "Not enough time to do it right, but time enough to do it over" reigns supreme in the firearms and other industries. I guess we as buyers need to inspect the dickens out of potential purchases, and reject it, if it isn't right! That will really make the LGS owners unhappy, but what can we do? They are not doing us a favor by allowing us to spend our money at their counters!

I have two of the 44SPC GP100's at my shop. I'll have to check the sights on them.

And as usual, I had two new S&W revolvers that I sent back to S&W for cosmetic issues that should of been caught before leaving the plant. Seem now Ruger may be doing the same QC as S&W: the customer can do the final check!

The same way it slipped past your inspection at the dealer. You were in a hurry, you missed it, it happens. No doubt the same thing happened on the production line.

At least they're fixing it.

Default GP 100 issue

I called Ruger today and obtained a RMA# to return my GP 100.
They obviously have had several of these go out the door.

Yup, a litigation driven precaution resulting from a personal injury suit judgement years ago.

Regarding instruction manuals...

...funniest incident I've witnessed at the gun counter. A fella had a S&W auto that the slide wouldn't "stay open" on. He told the counter guy he had already sent it to back S&W, they returned it, supposedly working, and it STILL wouldn't stay open. Counter guy pulled the slide, engaged the slide stop and the customer said "How did you DO that...?"

The OP here,

Well, I got my GP100 .44 back from the Ruger warranty repair shop today. And WOW, they did not fix the front sight issue.

Take a look at the original photo and the one below. I am not sure if they did anything at all.

I am not a happy camper!

Calling Ruger tomorrow......

Looks like they slapped a return label on the unopened box and handed it back to the UPS guy.

I'm far more interested in their 8 shot .357 Redhawk, but just maybe I'll avoid either one until they get this sorted out. I want a longer barrel anyway.

I Just sent mine in Friday with a written explanation of the issue. Did you have any kind of communication with these people before they shipped your gun back? Was there any kind of work order or anything to indicate that a person even examined your revolver or what their determination was?

Yes, I sent them pictures, the same ones I posted here.
Also sent a letter in the case with the GP100 outlining the issue.

They knew the problem, I was very clear in my communication.

As you said to begin with....Wow!
I'm saddened to see this. It's totally unacceptable to completely ignore and fail to address the problem.
It's not the Ruger I used to know and do business with.
Maybe they've been helping the blind by hiring some on production and repair lines?

Yeah no kidding. I'm liking my 396 Mountain Lite more and more.

Karnivore should cut his losses, and trade the gun in on a S&W Model 69.

Totally unacceptable, I am going to call these folks and impress upon them that I do NOT want that revolver shipped back to me in that condition. I will let you know if I have any luck. I have two friends that run a machine shop and are gun guy's, they were dumbfounded when I showed them that gun. As stated before, over the years I have cut a lot of dovetails, some with a machine and many by hand. Would never send something like that out the door, nobody else would that takes pride in their product or craftsmanship.

Bill would frown. I don't understand why dealers aren't returning these in the first place. Is it against the law for a gun dealer to reject something this bad? Do they have to try to sell them?

All you have to do is ask yourself, "Does that look like something Bill Ruger would draw, or put out on the market?" It looks like some apprentice machinist's first attempt at a dovetailed front sight.

Ive had better luck with Ruger customer service than I have with S&W.
Still waiting on my shipping label for my 586. Getting tired of calling to ask.

I guess Ruger figures nobody is buying the .44 Special GP-100 to carry. The gap under the sight is merely cosmetic on a range only gun. Now, on a carry piece; no way I want that thread catcher on my gun! Bill Ruger is rolling over in his grave.

OP here,

Well, the GP100, .44 Special, with the "WOW" front sight is on the way back to Ruger for the second time. One of the big wigs is suppose to call me when he gets it in his hands for evaluation.

Update when I hear something back.

IT TRULY SADDENS ME TO SEE THE DEPTH THAT RUGER QUALITY HAS SUNK TO. TO RECEIVE THAT GUN TWICE, IN THE SAME CONDITION, IS TRULY UNFATHOMABLE ! ! !

AT ONE TIME RUGER CUSTOMER SERVICE WAS THE BEST IN THE INDUSTRY. SADLY, THOSE DAYS ARE GONE.......

Ruger firearms has always been number one to me for strength and quality. That's changing. My RedHawks have been awesome. I think I'll stick with what works.
There is no quality control they machine operators check there first piece inspection to the print and run the lot as most manufacturers do. Every manufacturer is cutting costs by eliminating there QC department. In my lifetime in the machine tool business it was get it out the door make the money and fix it in the field if need be. With guns just sell it to me in a kit form with a few files I'll build it and fit the parts myself.

Avoid the hassle and file it yourself.

The dovetail is not cut properly. Without welding, there is no way to "fix it yourself" and you shouldn't have to, anyway. They have a bunch of barrels with improperly cut dovetails, no doubt, and they are all scrap. They are hoping they can ship to people who don't know/don't care and minimize their losses.

I was on fire to get one of these when I first heard they were coming out. That burn has had cold water poured all over it. Thank you Karnivore for the thread and updates.
