I was at 13, but for the 21st birthday of each son, I gave them a 1911 set up: A 1911 of some sort a US holster, 2 mag pouches 5 "good" 1911 mags, 1 Wilson "fantastic" mag, cleaning kit, 200 rounds of factory ammo, and instructions with exploded view diagram. The Wilson mag is to diagnose if other mags (they each have picked up several more) are causing function issues!

So that accounted for 3 1911's. I Sold 2 Springfields I didn't like so now I'm at 8, and I can't seem to find any others to interest me. So yes, 8 is enough! (at least for me)

You've got some good selections there, but I'm sorry, can't help you on another brand recommendation. If you want to go kinda different, there were/are some Argentine 1911 military versions out there. Not too expensive... just find a good example.

However, do I feel compelled to add a different type of comment...

I love my 1911's, but half of them aren't .45s. I love shooting .38 Super, and on occasion, 10mm. I don't have any 9mm versions yet, but it could happen. Who knows, something to consider?

Best wishes, but I'm not sure "Eight is Enough"!

Sounds like an excuse to get one in an alternate caliber such as 9mm or 22. You won' be sorry if you do. It adds another dimension to 1911 shooting (and will save you some ammo costs).

That said, that the new Rock Island Tactical Series that have been coming through the shop are pretty impressive in features and fit. They have been flying out the door and customer feedback has been very positive I've got eleven 1911's (including 2 in 9mm, 3 in .22 and 1 in .40S&W). I'm seriously struggling with "needing" one of these.

The SA 1911a1 2004 made in Brazil did impress me. With the key start. Don't leave out the auto ordnance ww2 army 1911a1.

Two for right and left leg holsters.
Two for right and left shoulder holsters.

Four is enough,,,,,,,,just kidding.

Everyone knows an odd number is bad luck. When you have an even number, it's bad luck then too.

My advice it to keep collecting.

I've been able to stay at three; almost went to four but traded to stay at three. The new Colt Commander may get me to four.

and I traded my full sized .45 to get this new 9mm Ruger

Mr. Wonderful, aka Roger, mentioned the Argentine M-1927 Contract guns. The first several batches were made by Cold and have the tap dancing pony on them. Post WWII the made their own. I have owned both, and both are finely made guns. Maintaince was less stellar! After WWII Remington had drums full of small parts and nowhere to use them so they sold them to Argentina, so most of the small parts in the post war M-27's are really American made!

I bought a post war M-27 straight from importation. The gun functioned great with ball, and SWC bullets. I stripped it down and found it full of a black powder of some sort, it seemed too course to be graphite. I completely stripped and cleaned the M-27, and reassembled it. Then it no longer would feed ammo, any ammo! I replaced every spring with GI equalivent Wolff springs. Jammed all the time, so I took it apart and used it as a parts group and build the same gun from scratch. Started with fitting the slide to the frame, the barrel/bushing/slide group, the all the smalls! IT took as long as any kit I ever assembled, maybe 20% longer! When I was done, it was a top grade Military 1911A1 type gun. It kept 21 rounds of ball ammo in an 8" paper plate @ 25 yards. It now belongs to #2 son. (A Colt manufactured M-1927 belongs to #1 son, and #3 son has a parts "Race Gun" a small town police chief assembled - but I had to re-build to get it right)

The greatest of all 1911 type guns are the Norwegian 1912's. There are WWI series that have an unusual slide release, and are kind of rare. THEN there are the WWII series made under NAZI occupation, complete with Nazi proofs. I think less than 500 were made. A great QUEST gun!

Ivan

I am completely comfortable accepting everyone else's collecting habits, however, I am amazed at how people can own so many multiples of basically the same the gun. I mean, after a certain point, you are not gaining anything new, except maybe rollmarks. I know, I will here all about the fine details each one offers you. If it floats your boat, then fine. I am just amazed by it.

I don't own one 1911, yet. When I do get one, it will be a traditional 45 Colt, probably from the '60/'70s, and it will be my one and only. I have no need for multiples. It is kind of the same thing with SAAs. I understand the different calibers and generations, but in essence they are all the exact same. I do have one of those, I got a 357mag because I have use for that caliber and love it, but it will be my only one. In fact, I have no real need for that one, so why buy another.

Multiples just don't interest me. Unless they have an actual use, then maybe different barrel lengths for different jobs. For instance, I have a 6" and a 2.5" Python. One I hunt with, and the other I carry. Or I have a Detective and a Cobra, one for me and one for the wife.

So I guess scenarios like that could come up with 1911s or even SAAs, but once you get up past half dozen, I begin to not understand it. I think there really is a 'gun bug' that people catch.

I have eleven but need one more for an even dozen.
Check out the Remington R1 series, especially their "enhanced" models. Lots of bang for the buck at good prices at the LGS's. I have three of em and they all are very good shooters with very good reliability.

There are plenty of quality built 1911's priced between $450/$650. I just can't see putting all my eggs in one basket with one high dollar 1911 when for the same money I can shoot a few different ones. As we get towards $650 we're getting a decent 1911.

being an old Jar Head, you should have enough to outfit at least a squad with multiple mags, holsters etc for each pistol. just an old Wing Wiper's thoughts. lee

Since we're posting pics......

I have a silly personal goal of having 45 by the time I turn 45. I've got a ways to go yet, I'm turning 42 in February. They aren't all .45 though, a couple Supers, a 10, etc in the mix. I'm down a few since I took this pic so I may have to count my non-1911s if I want to get there.

Anyone spot the oddball? And what is it?

To answer your question, no. Eight is not enough.

Just to be contrarian, these are all 45s, although none are 1911s or A1s. Three of them are 45 Colt and one is 455.

Check out Rock Island Arms for a nice 1911 in your price range. Ihave one in 38 super that is quite nice and accurate.
And they have a great warranty, also.

How do Remington R-1's compare to real Colts of current make and to Springfield equivalents?

Sounds like you've got some quality pistols, not sure why you'd want to shop the $400-$500 market for a new one, compared to some of the ones you have chances are good that anything you buy you'll find wanting. If I were you I'd be watching the used market to try and find a deal on something nicer than the Turkish and Filipino offerings that dominate that price range.

As far as how many is enough, I don't really think about how many I have at any given time. Over the last fifteen years I'd guess I never had fewer than 5 and up to 18 or 20 at any given time. I guess the answer to the ***w many is enough' question depends on whether or not there's still one you're wanting, if there is then you don't have enough. I've got 9 or 10 right now, I'm not actively in the market for another but that doesn't men I wouldn't buy one if something caught my eye and the deal was right.

I am just amazed by it.

I don't own one 1911, yet. When I do get one, it will be a traditional 45 Colt, probably from the '60/'70s, and it will be my one and only. I have no need for multiples.
If you think that the only differences between 1911s are the rollmarks, it's clear that you've never owned a 1911 and don't have much, if any, experience with them. Obviously, there are plenty of differences between different 1911s, that's why people choose one over another or own multiple versions, just like those that own more than one N frame, K frame, or any other gun. And, if you feel they're all "basically the same gun", why hold out for a Colt from the '60s/'70s? Why not just buy the first 1911 you come across, unless you're only choosing it for the rollmarks.

Y'know, to be contrarian, you might look into "near" 1911's, like the Ballester Mollina's and Star offerings in .45 acp. These tend to be nice guns that run well, but because they aren't 1911's, you might find something nicer for the price.

Of the bargain/entry level guns, I have a Tisas. It's a Turkish brand, I think Buds and some others have them at under $400. Mine runs well.

Every 1911 I've got is different. Some have a gritty sloppy heavy trigger and some have a crisp 2 lb break. Variety, from old GI pistols to new hand built customs. That's why I love them and that's why I have several. It's my favorite pistol, and I have the means to own a few. I do have duplicates, but that's because I like that particular style and I'm a bit of a hoarder at heart.

People talk about gun kool aid, I guess I drank deep. The 1911 just works for me. Number 1 fanboy right here.

Anyone spot the oddball? And what is it?

To answer your question, no. Eight is not enough.

I'll play. I'm surprised you have had no takers so far.

Very nice collection for sure!

'8 is enough'

Clearly not enough, as you still know how many you have.

Does anyone know how to find the date of manufacture on the SW1911?

Mexican Kerry, did you make the "sweetheart" grips yourself ?

Fine line-up of pistols.

I missed your quiz by the way, I thought the 1905 was a Ballister-Molina.

Yes I made them. They are on a mixmaster '43 Colt frame with a Rand slide. Seemed fitting...
