I have an early Freedom Arms FA-83 Premier with the replaceable (not) forcing cone. 4 5/8" barrel with three cylinders 454, 45 Colt, and 45acp.

I would post pics but they are on Photobucket and it isn't worth the effort.

I bought the FA revolver in 1987 with the intent of using it for IHMSA metallic silhouettes, but by that time I was pretty done with the game. It has a 10" barrel and target sights. At the same time I also bought a FA scope mount (which I've never installed), a set of Pachmayrs and a set of RCBS dies. For a looong time it was the most I'd ever spent on a gun (until I bought a .500 Linebaugh Ruger Bisley), and was only the 23rd gun I'd ever bought.

Shooting it is a pleasure and a pain. The feel when you cock the hammer is one of amazing precision, like the proverbial bank vault. When you press the trigger the feel is of getting whacked in the hand with a bat, and a sinus-clearing muzzle blast. I've only ever used the gun for plinking, and boy does it do a number on a gallon can of hominy!

The Taurus I picked up at an OKC gun shop in 1999, just because it was at a bargain price. Not nearly as refined as the FA but you can shoot it rapid fire in double action for enhanced "fun".

Thumbs up

When I ordered my 4 3/4" Freedom Arms Premier grade .454 in '97, I ordered it with a 45 ACP cylinder also. I'd read reports of the brutal recoil of the .454 and figured I'd shoot it mostly with the ACP cylinder. Wrong! The moderate amount of shooting I've done with it was mostly the .454. I don't hunt, hike in bear or Dinosaur country, etc. I only bought it was because I'd previously handled a couple and was amazed at the quality, that "solid as a bank vault" impression. I have no need or particular use for my .454, but I just enjoy owning an example of the finest quality revolver that I have ever handled or shot.......ymmv
