Default Impressed with Spyderco.

I've carried a police model Spyderco with a serrated edge for most of my adult life, and abused it horribly by cutting just about everything from baling wire to seat belts to sandpaper. It was EDC and I used it to open, cut, rip, stab, pry, screw and even hammer things with.

Over time, it got to be really dull, but the serrated edge still did enough to give me all the ragged cuts I wanted, so I continued to carry it. I broke the tip off by dropping it onto my shop floor. Finally, after trying to cut Christmas wrapping paper with it and only getting rough cuts, I decided it was time to send it in for a sharpening.

Spyderco's website says the sharpening service is free, aside from $5 in shipping. Additionally, they will re-contour the tip, should you foolishly break it off, for an additional $20 so long as enough of the tip remained. If not, they'd refund the money when they sent the resharpened knife back. My tip only had about a 32nth of an inch broke off, literally just the tip. Wouldn't take anything at all to fix that. $25 to get my favorite knife all ship-shape? That's a bargain!

I actually took a picture of the tip, because I thought about emailing them first before deciding to just send it and let them see it in person. (Don't mind my tiny scribbling..)

So I mailed it in, along with a letter stating that I broke the tip because I'm a klutz and it also needed to be sharpened, and I thanked them for a nice knife that served me well.

A couple of weeks later, a box shows up with this inside...

They sent me a new knife. And my $25 dollars back. They didn't even charge me shipping! It's the updated version of my twenty year old one, with different mounting points for the clip, engraved "police" on the blade instead of this etching, and notched release, but otherwise identical.

I didn't expect a new knife at all. I kinda miss my old one, it served me well for a long time. But gosh, I can't give Spyderco enough credit for taking care of this customer, and I can't say no to a new knife! I am impressed and they've certainly earned my loyalty. I almost feel like I ought to call them and ask if there's been a mistake, but I'm pretty sure they knew what they were doing. I'll be sure to pass a few of these out next year for Christmas presents as atonement!

That's awesome! I too am a Spyderco loyalist and your story further solidified that sentiment.

Heard a lot of good reviews from satisfied customers concerning these knives. Sound like quality knives with good steels used in production. Customer service sounds excellent.

I've had 5 total over the course of 15 years now, lost 2 (one I idiotically left in a carry-on and surrendered post-haste in cooperation), destroyed one in a construction accident (those multi-ton industrial presses didn't leave enough to even ask Customer Service about, not to mention the 'well what had happened was...' story was too embarrassing), and one is in the desk drawer next to me as I type; the other in my pocket.

I love all kinds of guns, but for folding knives I guess I'm a loyalist.

I have carried Spyderco knives for decades and prefer them to expensive models. That is an impressive story about their customer service. On several occasions I had to trash them at airports. If you travel internationally have a backup in your checked luggage. They make great gifts to tactical types in foreign lands. Builds good friendships.

It seems so obvious - you know that gesture cost them almost nothing, but it sure gained them a loyal customer. I wish more companies would figure that out!

I've been a big fan of Spyderco for decades. I use and carry the Military and had one in my uniform pants for probably the last 15 years before I retired. I gave my sons one as a gift upon graduating from Paris Island and for the last ten years a military was the Christmas gift I gave to my sergeants who worked under me on the shift.

Great story about their customer service

I just went and double checked, but I've got seven Spyderco's in various configurations. Back when I crawled in to burning buildings, I carried one constantly, and I still have it, but lately, I've gravitated towards Benchmade as my EDC. Without regard to that, Spyderco makes a fine knife that I'd trust my life to. And have . . .

Congrats to the OP. By chance his new Police model is the same one I've been carrying this week. I've probably got a couple dozen Spydercos and have gifted several to my son in law over the years. A great company with great products.

A Spyderco has been clipped to my pocket for more than 20 years. I lost one Delica, but managed to hold on to my Endura since then. A few years ago my son and I were poking around in the state surplus equipment store and found the box of confiscated items from the airports. There among the cheap knives was a battered Delica with a broken clip. For $7 it came home with me, and it rides in my watch pocket when I'm not carrying the larger one. It sharpened up nicely.

Spyderco knives are awesome. I have carried one for the last 10 years. The first one I had was stolen by the movers during one of my military moves, so I had to order another.

I love my Spyderco Military. It's a big knife but the handle is so thin it carries better than any of my Benchmades or ZTs. None of the other knife makers ever figured that out; some of us don't like thick handles.

I completely agree on the thinness as a desirable feature. The Police model is large as well, but still super thin and never feels like I've got a slab of metal in my pocket.

I'm on my 3rd or 4th Spyderco Endura, the early ones were lost. I carry the current version clipped IWB Appendix carry and use it about every day. I haven't had occasion to use their customer service, but I've heard good things from other people. I also like that it's a good sized knife but thin enough to carry comfortably.

We are fans of Spyderco here. My favorites are the Manix 2 XL and the Military, but I always belt carry and like to have a knife large enough for any use I might end up having to do. Wendy like the PM2 and the Native 5 best of the Spyderco knives, and we both love the Delica and think it was and is an excellently thought out knife. I keep one in my desk drawer at work so that even in the odd case I forget to belt on a knife I have one handy there, and we both agree that it is one of the best pocket knives out that you can just drop in your pocket and carry loose. Big enough to be useful but not much bigger than the little 2 and 3 blade pocket knives that have been so common for generations with the plus of a good sized lock blade on it. I keep an Endura in one of the cup holders of my car as something to keep in the car and always have a good blade ready for use. We also keep a Tenacious with a coating and partial serrated blade here at the house as an inexpensive open any boxes and packages in the mail knife.

Thank you for sharing that story. It helps me to justify my current addiction to acquiring more Spyderco knives. I'm hooked on the Delica 4 in it's various blade configurations, but have a couple of Endura 4 designs for when a bigger knife is called for. I have a British Racing Green ZDP-189 Full Flat Ground Delica on order and my old Foilage Green combination edge Delica was sent to Golden for sharpening yesterday. I want a Para 3 and will get one as soon as they readily available.

I remember when the Spyderco's first came out and they were the first one with thumb opening blades. It seemed like people everywhere were buying them and seeing how fast they could flip open the blade. That Spyderco factory serrated edge was DANG sharp and I know several people that cut the holy heck out of themselves trying to flip it open fast.

In this day and age it is refreshing to hear about a company that values it's customers and provides such service. I own a bunch of spyderco's, they are "scary sharp" with the serrated edge and IMO overall great knives.

I wanted to add that I'd been carrying mine for many years before someone told me it was somewhat of a rarity due to the BG-42 steel. I guess they're using something else now.

Spyderco is the brand I trust. I've had knives that cost twice as much as a spyderco that failed miserably. I keep going back to Spyderco.

Amazon Prime Sunday delivery dropped off a new Delica 4 ZDP-189 steel model here shortly after noon today. It's supposed to hold an edge very well and be difficult to sharpen. I plan to send it to Spyderco when it needs sharpening. Only time will tell if it was worth spending more for the powdered 'super steel'. Actually this one is probably more of a collector than an EDC. From time to time my EDC knife is abused, and I think VG-10 steel will hold up better to abuse. I know it will cost less to replace a broken VG-10 model, so the ZDP-189 will probably become a slicer to take to fancy barbecues.

Perhaps I should break the tip off my Spyderco and send it to them. It was my first pocket knife (other than my Boy Scout knife). The pocket clip broke off. I contacted Spyderco and they said I was out of luck as they stopped warrantying it. You got a new free knife, and they wouldn't even fix the clip for me.

I switched to Gerber and have been pretty happy with both the Gerber knives and the quality.

Maybe send it to repairs and see what gives? The website says this:

"For the following repairs please include $20.00USD plus $5.00USD for shipping and handling

Blade or edge- Broken tip from prying or dropping, chipped edge or broken serrations, destroyed edge due to improper sharpening, rust due to neglect or other blade issues. Spyderco does not replace blades. Depending on the blade’s condition we may be able to re-profile or re-serrate.

Clips and clip screws- sheared off screws or broken FRN integral clips (can only be replaced with metal clips).

Handle- Missing Kraton inserts or other handle issues."

So i just sent them my knife and the money to fix it. I never spoke with them at all. If you don't mind reinvesting 25 bucks to get your knife fixed, it might be worth a shot.

Default Ahhhhhh Spyderco's.....

Had converted to all Spyderco EDC's a little over 20 years ago. Love them.
The best ones, IMO, are the older ones with the molded in pocket clip, the later metal ones always seem to contact the car door frame when entering...
Anyway, these ProGrips are among my fav's, unfortunately the half serrated one in the middle is hiding somewhere around here, has been for several years. My wife claimed the non-serrated one, and I EDC the full serrated.

This fully serrated Delica is also a fav (and extremely hard to find these days), my youngest daughter carried it when we were in Africa on a plains game hunt back in 1996, it's now in a secure location to keep it from going to another home anytime in the future

Looks like a Miltary with carbon fiber. Spyderco only made one model in BG-42 that I know of so I would say yours would be a fairly rare one to have.

Great of them to give you a new knife but I kept reading hoping they sent your old one back to you also. Sometime in the 90's I found a Spyderco knife on the property I was deer hunting. There were about 12 of us that leased the property for bowhunting only all season. One Saturday we were hanging around the camp around lunch and I had my new found treasure out playing with it when one of the guys mentioned that he had lost a Spyderco just like the one I had. I told him it had to have been his and returned it to him. I immediately bought one but could not find one with the plain blade he had and ended up getting one with a serrated blade just like the one in the photos a couple of posts above. I used it for years but misplaced it a while back during either a move or new truck purchase. I would love for it to turn up. This thread brought back some old memories not only of the knife but old buddies I used to deer hunt with.

Given how much the price has risen on these knives since I bought mine, that might be a good idea and investment.

I actually came across it while putting up Christmas decorations this year! It's missing a bolster, and it's a little rusty, but still works as it was intended to do.

I have 12 one for each month they are tools that I use everyday. When I have 8 dull knives I send them in for re-sharpening they have replace a few over the years at no cost, this is why I stay with the brand.

Yeah, I'm an admitted nostalgia sufferer, so I kinda wanted my old trusty one back. But I absolutely can't complain, any reasonable person would be very happy because this is a new knife, and my old one was pretty wore out and loose.

Honestly, the thing that surprised me the most was the return of the money, even if it wasn't covered in warranty. If they said "hey, your knife was so wallowed out that it wasn't worth fixing, so we kept the money you paid to fix it and just sent a new one", I'd have been surprised, but not ruled it enough of an event to make a post about it.

Instead, it's like I tried to buy their service, and they said "no, let us hook you up free of charge, and have a great day." That's the surprise and I why I'm so impressed. It's that feeling you get when you try to buy something and whoever it is just waves your money away and says don't worry about it.

Spyderco seems to have the most rabid fans. It has never appealed to me enough to lay out cash for one. I did give my son one. He never carries it and uses it only rarely. His favorites are the mini Griptilian and the Kershaw Swindle, neither of which I own.

One thing I do like about Spyderco is their designs seem to favor practicality over tacticality.

Spyderco still wants to charge me $5 for replacement screws for my pocket clip because theirs were too short. I typically stick with Kershaws/Zero Tolerances. (prepare for fanboying) 100% Free sharpening, and free clips + screws. I actually asked Kershaw if they could send me 3 scallion pivot screws since they conveniently fit my Spyderco's pocket clip and I got an envelope a couple days later. I was even gifted a 0770 for no particular reason (fanboying over). If I were you though I'd just invest in a sharpening kit. You can get a good one for $40 that'll put a hair shaving on your knife. Your knife won't be out of service for longer than an hour max. You can also reprofile edges to whatever angle you want. I have most of mine at around 30 degrees inclusive.
I use the blue spyderco in this picture as my range knife. I'm also thinking of picking up that blurple S110v PM2

Very sharp pointy knives near primers......totally not a sketchy photo whatsoever.

I've a spyderco Mariner that was given to me by the president of the oil spill response team that we had under contract for oil spills. Few weeks later he shows up doing his father Christmas routine and hands me another. The second one went into deep storage while the first was used to cut rope and stuff. Great knives. Frank

I decided since I have not been able to locate my old trusty Spyderco to purchase one of the original ones like mine with the plastic clip off of eBay. I found one and put a bid on it and forgot it. I was checking my emails the other day and realize I had won the bid. I had also just a few days before bought my 11 year old daughter a small phone purse to keep her iPod in. My very smart daughter decides to track her package while I'm out in the yard hitting golf balls yesterday. She excitedly comes running out telling me that her package has been delivered and will I walk to the mailbox with her. While walking she informs me that she had also noticed I had ordered a knife and that she would keep it quiet and wouldn't tell Mommy! I could not help but laugh.

I'm a big fan of the gen 1 spydercos, but only the ones with the wider, thicker pocket clip. I have a black bladed Delica exactly like yours although the black finish on mine shows a lot more wear. It has been my EDC for the past decade. Great knife.

Yeah, I'm sure those evil pointy knives are just going to jump around popping primers left and right...
