Savage vs. Remington
Two LGS have base 22LR semi-auto rifles on sale for $99.00
One has the Savage 64-F while the other has the Remington 597.
If have one or knowledge on either/both, your observations, etc. will help decide which to buy. Rifle will be used to remove rodents and target shooting. May eventually add a scope.
Thanks for the feedback.

I haven't handled the Savage but the 597 was a pretty green laminate with NRA medallion in the stock that I won at a Friends of the NRA event.
Great feel, love the stock. The trigger sucks, bad. Thing wouldn't feed. Remington has tried several versions of magazines. I tried them, better, but still hangs up. Sits in the back of the safe untouched. When I want semi auto I grab one of my many 10/22's that have good triggers and go bang every time (other than ammo related).

See if you can find a Marlin M-795.
I would hesitate to buy anything Remington these days and that Savage is a rather crude bottom of the line item, isn't it?

Not familiar with the Savage but have an older 597. I haven't shot the 597 a lot, but have used several types of ammo in it. Never a malfunction or other issue. I actually prefer it to the Ruger 10-22 in the family....

I have the Savage, and have had the Remington. That said, at least the Remington worked properly. Yeah, the trigger was heavy, but it fired every time the trigger was pulled. That's more than I can say about my Savage. If you want an autoloader, get a Ruger 10-22. They usually work pretty dang good, and there is mucho aftermarket support........

Amen to L Pete!!! nothing more disappointing than a cheap 22. In my area, you can get a very nice used 10/22 that is stock with a scope for #225.00. that is only another 125 for a quality, proven gun with tons of upgrades available for it.
The 10/22 aint popular because it is a piece of junk.

For 99 bucks buy one of each and have a blast.
Be a good way to compare who is making the
best "inexpensive" autoloader right now.
Shoot both of them equally and keep em' clean.
You can always pass them on to some youngster
who is ready for a first rifle like a grandchild.
I love shooting my .22's
They are great for practice or hunting rabbits and squirrels.

Marlin 60 for the win! Of course, I say that because I got mine for free. Realistically it is capable of great accuracy IF you can keep the .22 crud out of the trigger system.

I wouldn't waste my money on a Remington or Savage. Marlin 60
is probably 2 best of the big selling 22s. They are accurate, but I
get a lot of them with feed problems. The 10/22 is easy the #1
choice in 22 rifle. I have one I bought back in 60s when they 1st
came out. I can honestly say I have never had it jam.
