NEW Colt Cobra
As I was thumbing thru my brand new GUNS & AMMO today there it was, a full page ad from Colt touting their brand new Colt Cobra steel-frame snub-nose revolver. Now, major gun manufacturers have in the past advertised a new gun that never actually made it to the market place (though only rarely) but this could be interesting. FYI

Supposed to be available next quarter, MSRP $699. They've got a big hill to climb against what's already available in this category. Kimber's six shot snubbie's been out for some time, hasn't made a dent yet, (at least not around here). I'm anxious to have a look, but as far as shelling $$$ out, we'll have to wait and see.

I'll reserve judgement until i get to see one in person.
I hope it does well.

Yes, we'll see. i.e. I've yet to know anyone that has actually seen the Kimber K6 in LGS's since it's preview last year at the Shot Show. Colt is notorious about starting a product then changing directions abruptly. I do believe it will eventually make it out to the retailers but at scalped prices (MSRP is stated at $699.00) until about a year from now. Die hard Colt fans will buy it just because regardless of price. I for one shall wait and see..... And probably wait some more. Yawn........ZZZZZZZZ.....

I already own a S&W Mod 60-15 3 Inch that I carry IWB. I’m interested in the Colt because of 2 things, 6 shots and no internal lock.
I would not buy it until I give it a thorough testing at the range.
Ultimately, it will come down to trigger action.

I already own three Colt DS revolvers so I am likely to buy one on general principle. They claim these things have a very nice trigger right out of the factory but they claim a LOT of stuff that turns out to be bogus. I am guessing these have a more modern internal system than that of the old DS/Cobra guns, but I don't know that for a fact.

Far from the original. My 1974 Cobra weighs 16 ounces where this new one is 25 ounces. I'll stick with the old one, it has a superb trigger.

There have been several threads about this new gun already.
I'm a big fan of the Colt D frames. Waiting to get my hands on the new Cobra to check it out. If its as good as they claim, I will buy one.

I was really excited to hear the news. Noticed no one has brought up something that may be even more unsightly than the internal lock on Smith's. Don't know why Colt even thought of doing it but these new Cobra's have a QR code stamped on the frame. Do you guys ever use a QR scanner to look up firearms? I didn't think so... About as pointless as having an internal lock. Still it's a nice looking revolver.

I'm just glad to that companies have enough confidence in the revolver market to bring new ones out. Smith & Wesson's new 66 and 69's, now Kimber and Colt...You know they don't expect any big police/military contracts, so they must be counting on the "civilian" market to buy them.

Agree that it is not like the original Cobra with it having a steel frame. They should have picked another Snake name......

I have yet to see this question answered:
Does the trigger weight "stack" in double action?

I wouldn't buy one because I do not like fiber optic sights.

The front sight blade is said to be easily replaceable. Remove a screw and swap it right out. Reported options are plain black, fiber optic or night sight.
I don't care for fiber optic sights either. But I think I'll just wait until I find one with the plain black blade already on it. That's "IF" I buy one.

Hey folks!
At that price point you are not gonna get a Python!
The gun is getting decent reviews, even from the skeptics. The revolver is comparable to the S&W revolvers, not the Special Shop models.

Who has been told the Colt is a refinement of the Mark III/IV action and it works.

Excellent point Skeptic 9c!
Colt is trying to get back into the revolver market with an affordable, utility revolver.
No, it ain't a lightweight like its namesake.
No, it doesn't have a classic Colt finish.
But so far, all the reviews have been good.
What they have here is a fairly plain EDC wheel gun at a reasonable price. So quit nit-pickin' and just wait until they're actually available. Then judge the gun on its own merits.

I handled the Kimber at the LGS and liked it a lot. The trigger is interesting, I wish I could shoot one. Very expensive though. I look forward the checking out the Colt.

I think I'll stick with my 1968 Cobra Light Weight. It is a former
LEO gun with lots of "character".

My new 327TRR8 has a QR code on the grip frame. Guess the factory uses it during assembly & packing.

My Colt 6920 has a QR code on the frame as well. Does not bother me a bit.

I'm glad to see Colt coming back into the revolver arena, along with Kimber and new S&Ws. However, like alot of things, I'll let the public do all the R&D on it and might pick up a used one in a couple years.
As far as it's looks tho... it looks like a $299.00 gun. Just my opinion.

Your thinking is close. I would call them 'marketing ploys' instead of bogus claims though. Whatever you want to call them, they are working exactly as Colt wanted them to so far. Let me explain some details.
Colt came out with the SFVI, then the DSII, in the mid '90s as a cheaper design to produce versus the old D frame V spring action. It used a hybrid action, which is mainly the MKIII design/parts but with a leaf mainspring instead of coil. That leaf spring is the only part of this new design it shares with the old V spring action. Nothing else is the same. The old V spring actions used all forged steel internals that were hand fitted, and got much better polishing jobs with bluing or plating. This new SFVI design incorporated cheaper parts, cheaper finishing, corner cutting, everything you would expect to reduce production costs. 9 yrs later they bailed completely on DAs due to cost.
Fast forward to now. Colt has no money to R&D a brand new design, thus they are re-releasing the last affordable revolver design they made, the DSII. If you read the new Cobra spec sheet, it is all a marketing ploy. LL2 for instance, a new hi-tech name for an old design, but guess what, it makes everyone think of V spring action and ultimately the Python. The very reason many are asking how it compares to a Python. The model name was specifically chosen to attract all the 'snake craze bandwagonists' even though the Cobra never existed in stainless prior. The only reported changes were to the grip frame and trigger guard, but supposedly old grips and holsters from the DSII/SFVI will still fit, so not sure how that works. The internal parts are in my opinion identical to the SFVI and the DSII. The schematic I seen and visual comparisons I did all point to identical. An easy to change FO front sight is the only genuine new thing I see.
With all that said, I heard the trigger pull and action is really good. Those old DSIIs were known to have really good DA pulls due to this hybrid action, and this Cobra will be the same. I would venture this new Cobra is better than most competitors in its class. The price is ok, $699. At a time when folks are trying to gouge others by charging upwards of $2K for the old DSII and SFVI, you can't beat having the option to buy a new production equivalent for significantly less.
If anyone wants to make comparisons, compare apples to apples, the new Cobra to the DSII. Not apples to oranges, the new Cobra to the Python, or even the old Cobra. They will never be close. When an old Detective can be had for $500, it makes this new Cobra not so desirable, for me at least.
