Default Marlin 336A .35 Remington

Anyone have any feedback on this rifle. Thinking about adding one for grins. Any comments appreciated. An older one, not new production, and a rifle with 24" barrel and half mag.
TIA

Had a Marlin 336 in .35 rem back in rhe early 1980's. Shot deer out to 200 yrds with open sights. The .35 rem dropped them in their tracks. Nice rifle.

I have never owned one but know many people who do and they love the gun and caliber.
It's a great deer round, I understand.
I, too, would look for an older one that has the beefier stock.

My Marlin 336 is 30-30 Winchester caliber.
Made in 1976.For our Texas woods, it is perfect.

I always figured that the 35 Remington was rather a sleeper round that like Rodney, doesn't get any respect except from those who use it. It is a great pairing with the Marlin 336. I think that you will be happy with the combination. Good Luck.

I remember one of dad's hunting buddies hunted with one, and he always had venison after deer season was over.

My grandfather had a 336A in .35 Rem with 24" barrel and half mag. Wish greedy relatives hadn't gotten their mitts on it and sold it at a gun show. Cripes, I wudda paid them more than it was worth just to keep it in the family. Wouldn't mind having one like it, but of course it will never be the same.

I am short on 35s right now, down to 3, been down sizing. Have
shot many deer with 35, great woods gun with a lot of thump.
I have 336Mar, 14Rem, 141Rem. The Marlins are slick rifles, if
you go with older one. I like 1950s-60s models. The only issue
with 336 is OAL of cartridge. They are unforgiving and will give
you the Marlin Jam, with over length loads. All in all 336, well
made, dependable, and accurate- in any calibre. Remington has
ruined Marlins rep. Stay away from "Remlins".

I am down to one 336A and it is a 30-30 made in 1950, my birth year. I've had a .35 in a 336A and it was very accurate. the longest shot at fur was under 100 yds and it was DRT. lots of stopping power and the A is just way cool looking with the 24" barrel and half mag. go for it. lee

Default 35 Rem/336

I own a 336 in 35 Remington and although it`s not as old as those alluded to here in previous posts it is John Marlin production and has never given me any trouble and as others before have said it does kill critters well beyond its paper ballistics. I reload for it and favor the Speer 180 grain JSP although Remington and Hornady make what you most likely will find on the shelves. If you don`t reload those rounds will take anything you`re most likely to favor hunting. marlinowners.com will be a great help to you and read the bullet tests by a man that goes by the moniker "35 Remington"(hope I don`t get in trouble for mentioning that site, but it pertains to various Marlin rifles so I would think there is no jealously regarding it). Good Luck, John

My first deer rifle was a used Marlin 336 in .35 Rem. I got it for my 17th b'day and had it for 33 years. I haven't shot it in 4 years but going to sight it in and hopefully take it on a TX hog hunt this summer. Always worked but the groups were opening up in the last few years that I was shooting it, but it might have been me.

Got an older one, used, in 1988. It has a 4x scope and is deadly on deer here in eastern NY. Depending on your cost, I'd highly recommend it.

I've never owned that combination, but have had several Marlins (no .35s) and several .35s (no Marlins). Great cartridge (easy to handload) and great rifle. If the price is anything like right, buy it !

.35 Rem is impossible to find where I'm at and have to search online. It has been difficult there too, which is why I have' shot mine in awhile. I will have to shop around for some for my planned upcoming hunt.

In the mid 1980's I owned a 1958 336 in 35 Remington. Great gun, but of little use in Ohio since we didn't allow real rifle cartridges for Deer hunting until a few years ago (and still don't allow bottle necked ammo like 35 Remington). A 200 grain round nose bullet will cure whatever ails you out to about 150-200 yards, but you'll need to be used to shooting that far, as the bullet starts dropping pretty fast.

Great cartridge and rifle combo.

You can take anything in the lower 48 under 200 yards.

Not a long range rifle, but will do nicely for virtually every hunting situation.

Had a later version built like yours, factory drilled and tapped in 30-30. Fairly accurate, good handling, good looking. I'd love to have one in 35. If its a fair price go for it.

Tom Hayes was very kind to rifle-length Marlins in his books of the 1960's. I guess I could stand to own a Model 336ADL, the nicer one with checkering.

But given the scarcity of .35 ammo, I'd get a .30-30.

The .35 rem is a sleeper in a lot of places. I own two of them myself, both 20" barrels. Around here you will find 6-8 with 20" barrels before you even see one with the 24" barrel. Might be different in other parts of the country. Ammo is not as easy to find as say a 30-30, but it's available, and it's higher than 30-30 as a result. Great deer cartridge for sure, and as a reloader I can load just about any of my .358/.38 bullets at lower velocities and it's a fun plinker. Don't pass up a nice 20" if you run across one, you can always sell it later when you do finally find a 24"er.

Ammo can be a problem as in getting any. A couple of the mfg have put it on the once in a while list to run along with empty brass. But I still see it for sale at shows though not at prices like 30-30.

I load it for a couple Remiington Model 8 and 81 auto loaders and the brass lasts a long time in those. Nice caliber to load and shoot.
I had a Rem Model 14 in 35R and it functioned fine with 158gr cast SWC pistol bullets. I used 5gr of reddot IIRC.
Don't know if the 336 would have feed problems with that though, they can be touchy when it comes to OAL cart length.

Marlin made a lot of them, it was their bread and butter centerfire rifle. Not a whole lot used to come back in for repairs when I worked there in the early 70's. Mostly small stuff from owner abuse or playing gunsmith. Lots of variations but all the same basic action. Even the Glenfield and Store brand rifles were the same thing.
Haven't dealt with any of the newer stuff, but they don't get much love!

Thanks for all the replies. I have an an offer on it so I'll see what happens. I have a Model 81 Remington in .35 which is why I want the Marlin in that caliber. I don't have a lever gun of any kind at the moment and need to scratch that itch. It sounds like it would be a mistake to let it get away. I have ammo on hand as I always make sure to have a supply for any firearm I own.
My 81 acquisition is a funny story. My wife calls me the "neighborhood husband" because all the widows, single moms, and married women whose husbands can't change a lightbulb call on me for help. Even a couple guys call for help and advice! Anyway a recent widow called needing help with something. I had helped her a few weeks before when she called and asked "how to tell if a shotgun is loaded?". After telling her to leave it alone until I got there she said she was driving around with it in her car with the intention of sending it to her SIL. I met her in the parking lot of the shipping company and all was well. But I mentioned I did not know she had it. She explained it had been her dads and after he passed she didn't know what to do with it but her SIL was trying to take up bird hunting so she was sending it to him. Then she mentioned she also had an "old" rifle. So back to the recent call for help. While I was there she asked if I wanted to see the rifle. Pulls out an old sheepskin case and I start to remove it. As the back of the receiver is coming into view I'm thinking A5. Then I see the rest and think, oh ****, this is pretty cool. Asks her what she wants to do with it and she says I can have it as no one in her family is interested in it. Seems her dad bought it new in '36 and owned it until he died. And that is why I want an older 336 to give it company.

my 35 is a carbine its the forth gun from the left in the photo,

its a great gun and caliber mine likes the heavier 200 gr stuff as far as accuracy is considered, but it will knock a elk on its but with the 220 grain loads at 100 yds

it done it back in the late 60's from a horse out in Colorado great saddle gun,
I would love to ad the rifle version to my collection of lever guns as well

The Marlin .35 Remington was fairly popular in this area back in the seventies. Lots of people seemed to favor it for a brush gun. I had one for a brief period, but sold it when Marlin came out with their .45-70 lever action with the straight stock. I did enjoy shooting the .35, though, and for me it was more pleasant to shoot than the .30-30.

Factory ammo is hard to find locally now, only one LGS carries it, and it's expensive. But if you load your own, it'd be a worthwhile caliber to have, especially if you like lever actions.
