Yes!!! Finally!!!
Finally!! The day 90% of our agency has been waiting for! After almost 8 years my agency is potentially dumping the M&P 45!!!!!
I have written before about our many issues with the M&P and finally we are doing something about it. Many of our guys have had multiple guns issued over the past 8 years. I can't even remember what number I'm on.
We are in the first steps of switching to the Glock 17. Our firearms instructors are excited!
I know I'm about to get flamed, but it really doesn't matter. I know there will be many people to tell me it's our training because so many other agencies love it or our people don't know what they're doing.
Bottom line is the M&P never worked well for us. We had continued quality and reliability issues after the entire agency had completely swapped out guns multiple times. For those that love it, good for you. Our agency is one of the 3 largest for its type in our state. Our local sister agency has had the same problems we have had, and are waiting to see how our transition goes.
If it worked well for you or your agency, I'm glad. Fact remains that for us it was a disaster.
Can't wait for the Glock.

My agency issues Glocks in .45ACP. I don't mind it, but I would rather have a Glock 17/19. 9mm is better against barriers from what I have seen, and I rather have the extra rounds.

I think you'll like the Gen 4 17.
I can't imagine running towards gun fire and not having complete confidence in the gun that you've been issued.
Good for you.

I'm not thrilled about 9mm, but I'd rather carry a reliable 9mm than an unreliable 45.
Given my druthers, we would be going to the Glock 21.
I own a Gen 2 Glock 19 and it has been stone cold reliable.
I still love S&W, but the M&P has to go.

My buddy said Philly Police are currently testing the M&P 2.0 for duty use. If I hear anything else, I'll let you guys know.

My understanding is our contract has just been finalized, the guns are in stock.
Supposedly plans to start scheduling transition training are beginning.

I think you'll like the trigger reset. When I was in the academy, our firearm instructors set a lot of time aside to teach others how to learn to use the Glock's trigger reset. For people who never shot a firearm or had very limited experience, they slowly began to shoot a lot better after implementing it.

450617, its not the gun's fault that the bullets rust in their magazines between qualifications. Just Kidding! Good luck with your Glocks.

What's old is what's new. It's interesting watching everyone going back to the 9mm.
I took a firearms class in 89' sponsored by the local JC that supplied 686's (yes, a college owned and issued guns for a shooting class ). Some young local Marine in the class used his own personal Glock 17. That started my love affair with Glock. In 91' I bought a G19 for off-duty. And in 92' I bought my own Glock 17 for duty use (Dept. started issuing 5904's, but not enough to go around). I retired out using the G22.
I'm so used to the .40, I feel like I would have to re-train to go back to a 9mm. Something about the lack of recoil.
Out of all the guns I like to "play with" my everyday carry guns have always been Glocks.
Good choice.

So I figured I would update everyone about our transition!
Last week was the first day of transition at the range. I was lucky enough to be one of the ones to go the first day of transition.
We were permitted to purchase our duty weapons....at a ridiculously high price of $493.17, plus the $30 the local dealer was going to charge us. Needless to say, day one, only 2 guys purchased their duty weapons. It was kinda satisfying to watch DSW6545 get thrown into the box with all the others.
I took two steps down to the end of the table and was given a brand new Glock 17. One more step and I got my new holster.
Classroom time was about 3 hours before we even hit the range and shot. Scores went up significantly and we didn't have anyone that had to reshoot for qualification. Gun runs so smoothly, points so naturally. It is a real change from what we had. Everyone in my flight was VERY impressed.
Nice to finally have a reliable functioning duty weapon for a change. In the past couple of days the response has been overwhelmingly positive. Everyone is excited and as I said, scores have improved dramatically. Even folks who are not "gun people" have expressed a higher level of comfort with the Glock.
Not bashing the M & P, just wanted to share a little of our transition experience with the Glock.

I've seen you mention problems, but never heard exactly what they were. Was Smith's response to the complaints a part of the problem?
I'd be shocked if scores didn't go up amongst the majority of shooters when switching from a .45 to a 9. I'm wondering if maybe the .45 recoil was causing the shooters to have feeding problems.
Bottom line, I'm in total agreement with you that I'd rather have a reliable 9 than a might-work .45. It pains me to say it, but Glocks are pretty much the universal service handgun these days, and have been for a while.

Now you need a Glock 19 for off duty.

I own gen. 3 guns I or my agency bought new. When I retired we carried a 4506, and I still carry a CS 45. I have a couple of other gen. 3 pistols and revolvers I bought new, and they look and function new. I take excellent care of my firearms. The present made striker fired plastic coated pistols are ****.

Wyoming Highway Patrol had .40 cal. M&P's for a few years. They had a lot of problems with them, and most of the troopers I spoke to hated 'em. They went with the Glock 35 a couple of years ago, also in .40 cal., and I've heard very few complaints since then.

Durham...it's wonderful this time of year....
I like the M&P 9 and the Glock 19. The 17 I have no use for.

An aside.
The two Capitol Police Cops on security detail ran to the sound of the guns -- Bravo!

I've read that somewhere before, that 9mm M&Ps tended to work just fine, but the other calibers seemed to have problems. Interesting choice with the long-tom Glocks, that's the first I've read of a long-slide being adopted by an agency. Definitely more style points!

We tested the M & P 2.0 in 9 mm and from what I am told, the instructors were not impressed. From what I have heard and from conversations I have had, S & W was never very responsive to the agency's complaints about the pistol. Now keep in mind, I don't have first hand experience with S & W's supposed reluctance to deal with the issues. However, I have heard it from more than one reliable person that was the case.
