Brought home my new GP-100 in .357 Mag-Whoa.. it's fine
Finished paying off this 6in blued GP-100 last week and after a fiasco with my usual FFL (They let their FFL expire...) I had it rerouted to another FFL. Worked a clopen so couldn't pick it up till this evening but it's typical Ruger. Everything is as it should be. That's really all there is to it. Another (mostly) uneventful revolver purchase.

I got my SS four inch GP100 last year on a consignment sale, but .327 caliber. Very solid revolver! Too bad Ruger discontinued the Security Six, have one in SS and it is like new. Rumor was they were not cost-effective to manufacture.

Double action is smooth and consistent. Actually better than my old 69 in .44 mag. I'll post more pics tonight when I get home. I always wanted to get my hands on a speed/security six but the used market is my only bet these days.

I got these grips (includes both the rubber part and the wood) on Amazon. Might look nice with the blue. I also like the feel.

Ammo is Underwood 125gr Gold Dot. These leave this 6in at roughly 1700fps. Not bad for this old cartridge. The battlefield green Glock 22 got in the picture somehow

I found them on Amazon. Search there for GP100 grips.

If you decide to go with a set of wood inserts, check out Chig's Grips. I've bought sets for my Alaskan, GP100, and SP101. He'll even install Ruger medallions for a small fee.

I've got a 6" GP100. It came in a package deal, and I really didn't want it, figured to sell it on. Then I shot it.
I believe I'll keep it. Even though I have several 357 Mags.
Nice trigger, and the Hogue grips, coupled with the 6" full underlug, do a good job of soaking up the recoil.
The GP100 is growing on me. I may have to get another.

There are only two things I don't like about the GP-100. The barrel would look better and be a lot lighter if it was a mountain gun profile, and the hammer looks like it was made in a prison workshop. I have also seen a Davidson's special edition Gp-100 that had a high polish blue finish and nice walnut finger groove grips and it looked pretty sweet!

I bought my GP-100 new over 30 years ago. I much prefer the original GP-100 grips over what they come with nowadays.

I have Pachmayr Grippers on my GP-100, as they fit both me and the gun. I had a lot of trouble finding grips that fit my frame precisely. My GP was bought in 2004. Stainless, four-inch. It rivals my S&W M-66-3 as the last handgun I'd sell.
I might put Chig's colorful wooden panels on my SP-101, but am leery that .357 recoil might crack the wooden panels. I've read that it can happen, and that they crack if you get the screws too tight. I left the original grip on mine, with the black Xenoy panels.

I wouldn't shoot overmuch of that ammo. I see these posts about how the GP-100 is built like a tank, but even an Abrams tank can be knocked out.
One of the Ruger boards had pics of a GP that had been fired a lot with handloaded ammo much like the Underwood load mentioned. The barrel throat was a pitted, fire-worn mess.
If you're going out to shoot an occasional coyote or are carrying the gun for defense, I can see using that light bullet, hot load. But it's too erosive for frequent use.
I use Federal's 158 grain Hyda-Shok load in my .357's when I want Magnum power. Winchester's 145 grain Silvertip load is also very lethal, according to dead people in Dallas area morgues. I got a detective to check on that. He said the load is almost TOO potent on humans. But he's more sqeamish than I am. A little overkill is better than not enough.
