Default "B Western" Colt Sixgun for one of the good guys.

This renickeled cut down 1890 Colt .44-40 reminds me of some guns used in old B westerns. In these movie books there's an occasional nickel Colt being used by one of the heroes cut down to 5" like this one. Only thing is, jigged bone grips would be better. These books, especially the two on top, are excellent and crammed with close ups of guns and rigs these western guys used. All I need now is a white hat...and a horse to head 'em off at the pass.

You'll need a silver bullet like the Lone Ranger gave me back in 1948. As you can see it rode a lot of miles in my pants pocket. Plumb wore the silver off.

I didn't know until just a few years ago that the bullet came apart at the rim and there was a secret compartment and a compass in there.

Have liked cowboy guns since I was a kid addicted to westerns! First real gun I bought myself was a single six because that was all I could afford. Real Colt 45's were and still are sort of high priced.

I grew up with the Westerns on TV, but it was Marty Robbins' album, "Gunfighter Ballards and Trail Songs" that really sparked my interest in such things.

I never really developed much interest in S/A revolvers though. I love the way they look and feel, but shooting them, not so much.

I do have a Ruger Single-Six, 50th Anniversary, with fixed sights, that does have the flavor of the Old West.

In my teens, I visited Judge Parker's courtroom in Ft. Smith and the museum there had a lot of Old West guns. I saw several cut-down Peacemakers. And some were indeed nickel plated.

But I think many movie guns had plastic grips, not real stag. Some may have been bone, jigged and colored to look like stag.

Here's my Cowboy Cannon, a 5 1/2 inch barreled Colt in 45 Colt. It's not a collector's item as the lettering on the barrel doesn't match the serial number. Also someone in the past prick punched two places on opposite sides of each and every one of the numerous screws. I haven't tried to take it apart. It's got plastic grips and I'm not going to change them. Sure is fun to shoot, though.

Cryano; you mention someone staked the screws and changed the barrel on your SAA. There are data bases out there that you can check, cause it sounds like you have a SAA that was rebuilt for The Roughriders! Sure sounds like a treasure to me!

This is a renickeled Great western .22 on top here, with ill fitting Franzite, not Great Western plastic grips. Roy Rogers was among scores of others whose guns wore fake stags similiar to these. Bottom is my .44 with real pearls, but I prefer sambar stag on it.

Cyrano: I was going to mention the possible connection with "The Roughriders", but was beat by "Ivan". Teddy Roosevelt's Roughriders guns have great provenance and I'm sure there are among us experts on serial numbers, common armorer practices, etc. Like Ivan, I too believe the history of your Colt SAA could be very very valuable to document. ....

I worked on several SAAs during the years of my operation as a Pistolsmith. One of which had those center punch marks on each side of the side screws. I was told by the owner that it was done by the "Horse Cavalry's" armorer to prevent loss of those screws while in the field on horseback. Seemed reasonable to me and a good 'cure' to prevent the loss of a critical screw and the subsequent disabling of a Cavalryman's handgun.

If the Rough Riders carried Artillery reconditioned military Colt SAAs, this gun could not be one of them. It has a button cylinder pin release that military Colts didn't have. But that feature came out in 1892 which was six years before the Spanish/American war. So the gun could have existed in 1898. Looks like an original slightly beveled cylinder but with a later barrel. Unless the gun is from the 1930s when the "Colt SAA .45" on the barrel appeared until the end in 1940. The hammer looks like a 2nd generation replacement with those shiny sides. My nickel .44 has a later hammer. Does the knurling on the hammer have a border with the checkering within it? If so, it might be original. Does your barrel have the Colt address on the right side as opposed to the top as usual? 1950s replacement barrels had that odd feature and are very common to encounter. That's a really nice Colt SA. I like the round bottom trigger guard. Later and sometimes earlier guns had a more flat bottom. Trivial maybe, but I like it.

Iggy, that's cool. I remember when The Lone Ranger and Silver came tp our hometown. They were brought in by the Merita bread people. He gave us all silver bullets. Thanks for helping jog my memory, that was some night! I'm excited about it all over again.

I was 6 years old and rode a horse to school each day. My Mom put an note in my lunch bag telling the teacher to send me home at noon.
I had no idea what was going on. When I got home I unsaddled my horse and went to the house. My folks loaded me up and we drove the 40 miles to town.
There had been an event on the steps of the Capitol and the Lone Ranger had addressed the kids and handed out silver bullets.
The gathering had broken up by the time we got there and the LR was headed out of town on the train.

My Dad made a bee line to the train depot.
We got to the RR Depot just as the Lone Ranger was ready to board the train.

I Dad approached the LR and told him of my journey to see him.

He came over to me,bent down to my level, and asked me about riding to school etc. He talked to me until the Conductor yelled "All aboard!" The LR handed me the bullet and shook my hand. It was quite a thrill.

There were four ranch boys in the school I attended for the first 4 years. We played cowboys and Indians during recess. We portrayed Roy Rogers, Gene Autry, Lone Ranger, and Hopalong Cassidy. Ya wanna take a guess who I was?

Wyatt: You know far more about Colt SAAs than I ever will or ever care too, but remember back in the days of the "Rough Riders" many of the officers and maybe even some of the EMs furnished their own choice of personal weapons. But, when afield, the available armorer kept everyone's weapons tuned and ready for field action. Perhaps Cyrano's Colt SAA had been a personal handgun, but received this tactical tuning from the Rough Rider's armorers. It bears checking out. ..............

My Colt SAA is SN 325XXX which dates to 1913, so it didn't go up San Juan Hill with the Rough Riders.

I don't presently have pictures of my cowboy guns on this computer but I do have them pictured in my albums section:

http://smith-wessonforum.com/members...aux-ivory.html

http://smith-wessonforum.com/members...aux-ivory.html

http://smith-wessonforum.com/members...a-replica.html

The two that are together are my main match Cowboy Action Shooting guns - Ruger Vaqueros (old style) in .45/c.

The Charles Daly SAA replica is a very sexy Old West style revolver with a far too light a trigger for me so I never used it in CAS matches.

I have a couple of Ruger Single Sixes, too - if youw ant to play with Old West style guns on the cheap the .22s or .22 Magnums are the way to go.

If you really like these types of guns I strongly recommend cowboy action shooting - you get to dress up to play, too!

Here is the official website of the sport:

Sidebar on the Lone Ranger - for Iggy's benefit - -

When Clayton Moore died in 1999 or 2000 his family auctioned off a lot of his memorabilia at Sotheby's. As you might expect, some of it was pretty expensive. Some was not, and I got his three pool cues for a mere 200 dollars! I need to frame them sometime. But they are in a safe place.

I think my Colt, dating from 1913, does have the 'rocking horse' logo, AKA 'Colt on a surfboard'. Attached is a photo of the marking; only the ends of the bottom half of the 'surfboard' show up. Either the rest was too lightly stamped or they were lost to wear. Thanks to Wyatt Burp for giving me a 'heads up' on this.

One of mine (1914 SAA-Frontier Six Shooter .44-40) is serial number 329XXX, shipped to El Paso, Texas on March 30, 1915. I'm sure they would all be able to tell lots of stories, if they could talk.

While smokeless powder was in common use before 1910, many people continued to use black powder ammunition for years. Corrosive mercuric primers remained common until the 1950's. My point is that these older guns were subjected to some potentially damaging elements for decades. Repairs and parts replacement were common. Parts (barrels, cylinders, hammers, and others) changed continually throughout SAA production history. Gunsmith training and practices were anything but uniform or standardized, so different methods and skill levels will be seen frequently.

They are all still interesting and desirable. While a 100 year old SAA in original condition and finish would be a thrill to encounter it could also require a second mortgage to own. Revolvers like the OP's are far more common and much more affordable, while also being great display pieces and shooters.

Several years ago I came to own a 1957 Second Generation SAA that had been highly modified by a previous owner. Originally a .45 Colt, the barrel was horrible and the cylinder was unsafe. Took me a year but I located all needed parts to restore the revolver, but it became a .357 because that caliber was what I found both cylinder and barrel available in. Great shooter now and still a sought after piece on the market.

Great old Colt. Enjoy it!

If my Colt SAA .357 could talk, it would be shouting "Let me out, let me out!".
Made in 1979, it (and another identical one) was bought new in 1980 by my brother for $329 at a going out of business sale. He put them both in his safe where they sat unfired - with the occasional wipe down - until I traded him out of this one in December, 2015.

This Single Six was my 1st "cowboy" gun. Bought it new in 1959, and it's still tight & shoots straight. After untold thousands of rounds, the finish on the aluminum grip frame has worn completely off.

Nowhere in the pages of history can one find a greater champion of justice. Return with us now to those thrilling days of yesteryear. From out of the past come the thundering hoof-beats of the great horse Silver. The Lone Ranger rides again!"

I have a frontier scout the k-series nickle, but I prefer my two uberti clones even though the case hardening is fake. I just bought a uberti Remington 1875 clone that should get here tomorrow. It's nickle as well, but used so I hope it polishes up well.

I got the chance to meet William Boyd (Hoppalong Cassidy) when I was very young. He let me heft one of his sixguns and I still remember how heavy it was, especially when compared to my cap pistols.
