Nice looking gun! I was looking at this pic and I could not see the proof marks.

The proof marks were not required on Military and LEO guns but many of the surplus guns that came in to the country the last few year had them. They also had a 2004 date code even though the guns were made in 1980/81.

Does yours have the gen 3 locking block? If it doesn't and you plan on shooting it a lot I would invest the $35 and swap it out.

Beretta's made in Italy have a date code stamped on the right side of the trigger guard. It is a 2 digit alpha code in a small box. My Italian made 92f is marked AN which indicates 1985. There is a chart that Beretta has to decipher the code.

Nice 92. I have had mine for a couple of years and it is a great pistol. Well made and action is smooth as silk.

Nice gun! I almost bought one myself but I already have a genuine Italian version so I elected to not do it. I should, though!

I have one of those. Very nice gun. The slide is as slick as butter. It shoots so SOFTLY. Hardly any recoil. I highly recommend them.

They are nice, but I'm too old to see those itty-bitty sights; otherwise mine is very nice. I also have an 92FS, like it also. Among many other postings, there's a recent (still on the first page) five page thread about them in the Handguns section of the Beretta Forum. Evidently some of them have better sights and a slightly different safety, I'll have to look for one of those.

An Italian expat living in Oklahoma has the most interesting posts in that thread, at least to me.

Per WVsig post, date codes were not required on Military or Law Enforcement pistols. Anyway here is the link to the Beretta Codes.

Nothing under the grips. PB on the barrel along with a different serial number. My serial doesn't show up on that database. Must be a rare one

Regarding the database and serials, my Beretta's didn't show up there either. I sent an email to Beretta inquiring about it, and they gave me a reply with the date. Mine was part of an LAPD contract.

Only one serious flaw with any 92. It's BIG. There is a reason the US military has used it for over 30 years. Joe

Sweet! Hey Brasky, I thought that I recognized you on the Files! These 92's are some good deals, the sights are a little small compared to a 92FS. I have an ex Israeli police Beretta 84F that I like, it is like a mini me to my 92FS.

To my knowledge the standard 92 had a frame mounted safety not a slide mounted one

Great Post. Thanks for the link. Here is a picture of my 92F, Made in Italy 1985. Bought at an auction about a year ago for under $400. AN proof mark indicating 1985 manufacture is on the trigger guard.

Look at the pictures of the "S", on the lower left hand side of the grip, there is a button.

That's the slide release. It isn't by the trigger as we've become accustomed to, it isn't inside the magwell like we used to see in older pistols.

For a right-handed shooter, it's not hard to maintain complete grip control with your right hand, thumb the release and catch the mag with your left, and do a swap. You might need to extend your right pinky, depending on the size of your hand. But for a lefty, it's a big hassle, and you have to completely reset your grip in a swap.

Neat pistol that! Here in SA I haven't seen many 92Fs, only a handful, but the 92S and 92SB / 92SBC are plentiful and great to shoot. Yes they are large but I carried a South African Z88 clone concealed many years without issue. Gotta love the Beretta 92!

I am fortunate enough to live in Prescott, the home of J&G and know the manager and have met the owner a couple times. They get some interesting stuff for sure. I stop in and check out the new/used stuff from time to time.

This thread has me looking across the web to see who has the best deal on these Italian stallions...I remember having an NIB Italian made 92 with bottom mag release back in the day and the bluing was spectacular and when you racked the slide it felt like it was sliding on glass.Alas, I sold it to move in a different direction but the pictures and comments bring back fond memories.

There are more than several of the usual suspects offering these surplus 92s models, both direct and on GB. My question is, how can you be sure you are getting a good one, and how are the import markings applied? I like the markings in the OP, but I see SOG has beautiful examples available but it looks like they have "PV ARMS" tattooed on the side of the slide. That seriously reduces my interest. Any thoughts?

Every example I have seen has had the pw Arms billboard except the example I received. My guess is you would have to call and ask

I was looking at that J&G ad too, but my rule against not buying what I cannot touch first held for now. I hope it is a great gun for you!

I looked into this gun before I ended up winning my Sig recently. They were around awhile, but it seems that now, J&G has the best price available, and judging from the photo, one of the better import marks.

Regarding import marks in general, it's a mixed bag. The best I've seen is Cole's Distributing (CDISales on gunbroker), I CAN'T find it on the FEG HP, and on 2 other pistols, it's on the barrel (hidden inside the slide). IAmmo put it on the underside of the dust cover on the pistol I've gotten from them, which is like this.
Every other gun I've gotten with import marks, including all from J&G, have been on the slide.

I stumbled across one of these at a gun show some time ago. The gun was as new as far as good see, looked like it was never issued? I got the gun at a reduced price because he couldn't sell it because of the import stamp? Didn't bother me since it appeared neatly done I didn't care.

Just an FYI for those dealing with J&G. If at all possible go to their store in Prescott and pick your pistol out in person. The usual procedure there it to take 4 - 6 examples out to the counter and they let you select the one you want. Another point: When they get really good deals they sell out quickly. I got one of the surplus Israeli Hi-Powers they had a few years back and it's a great pistol.

Stopped in a LGS/pawn shop yesterday and found two 92s models. Thought it a bit unusual for a small rural shop to have two that look identical in wear, etc.

Only one mag per gun. So my question is do other 92 series pistol mags work in a 92s? Thanks for your help.

Surplus m9 mags do not unless you create a notch where the magazine catch goes. Factory beretta 92fs mags already have the notch and work without problem. Some aftermarket mag companies have the notch and some don't but when factory 92fs mags are $22 I don't see a reason to mess around with aftermarket mags
