Interesting WWII Aviator Picture-Colt/K-Bar
There is another active thread on revolvers and the military which prompted me to start this one with a picture you WWII history guys may like.
This is a picture of Lt. "Corky" Smith from New York. He was a P-38 Lightning pilot in the Pacific Theater with the 80th Fighter Squadron - "The Headhunters". This picture was taken in New Guinea. He was a double ace (11 aerial kills). Notice the .45 with the K-Bar mounted on the web belt right behind it. Makes sense that you could grab either with same hand as needed. Suppose the cockpit of a P-38 was big enough to allow carry like this.
"Corky" graduated from a small college in Va. in 1940. The same college I attended.
Enjoy.

He was in army air corps so probably an army issue k bar. When you enlarge the picture it looks to be a k bar. Army air corps flew out in western pacific and CBI .

Fantastic photo and Thanks for sharing. It is hard to believe how fast our WW2 veterans are leaving us and taking some much history with them.

My SF Buddy Don carried a KaBar.
Hey Don!
Is that a Marine knife?
Don- no it's not. It's an Army Knife.
It must be. An Army guy is carrying it.
Actually, looking at the picture, I really can't confirm that he's carrying a KaBar.

Not attempting to make this thread stray, it just reminded me of this old Gov't Model rig I came across a couple years ago.
Its interesting to see how servicemen set up their individual gear to suit themselves.

An interesting side note was my father-in-law was a ball turret gunner on a B-17. Now that is a very cramped compartment, yet he carried a 1911.
