Default The perfect pocket gun

I have had a fondness for small pocket guns for a long time. My first was a Raven .25 auto then followed a Davis .32acp derringer, then a Kel tec .32, Kel tec .380, Ruger LCP, Taurus TCP, Ruger LCP 2 second generation, and now a Ruger LCP II. I typically wear standard fit blue jeans and don't consider a J-frame or any gun that size a pocket gun, but my new Ruger LCP II is the best of the breed in my opinion. When I first saw photos I thought it was ugly but no polymer flat black handgun is going to win a beauty contest, and I also didn't like the fact that it was slightly thicker than the original, but there's a reason for that. It's wider and more comfortable at the back of the grip and recoil isn't near as bad, I actually enjoy shooting a full box of ammo through it! The sights are perfect for a small gun and very highly visible but snag free, unlike the tall sights on the LCP custom with the dorky red trigger. The LCPII has an excellet trigger at about 5-6lbs and it is crisp and I found it pretty easy to hit a pie plate at 25 yards. That means the gun can actually be used, and not just carried for defense, and can be useful for targets of opportunity when I'm in the woods, like armadillos, coyotes, bunnies, squirrels, etc. So far I'm really happy with the gun though I have had a few jams with the very last round in the magazine. I'll see if that problem works it's way out but the magazine spring seems pretty light, which does make it very easy to load, but it may be a hair too light.

I'd clear up that mag spring issue before I carried it for any reason. Have you any add'l mags? If so, do they have the same problem? I've handled several LCPs in my LGS and can't pull the trigger on buying one. You may have hammered the nail in the LCP "coffin" for me.

Great to meet another mini-gun fan! I've bought enough "bookends" in my life and have concentrated of late on pocket jobs. Got a couple of mini-gun stories if you're interested. Good shooting!

The closest I have to a pocket mouse gun in my 431PD 32 H&R magnum.

Weighs only 13.5 oz.

For me goes into a pants pocket in a Nemesis holster and disappears.

But I'm old and wear baggy pants.

No one wants to see me in tight pants.

Glad to hear you found something that you like and thanks for the review.

The only pocket gun I own is a P938, which I love. If I were to purchase another pocket gun I think it would be a snubbie.

My pocket gun is the Ruger LC9S Pro and the reliability has been 100% perfect. However it is rather snappy with Federal's 147 grain HST. The trigger is also light enough to mandate anyone using these for carry never get sloppy. BTW, the trigger breaks at 4.5 lbs. and the total "creep" after the initial takeup is only about 0.04 inch. Makes it really easy to shoot well with at the range but it also means you don't ever put the revolver into a holster already in your pocket. It also mean that you really need to practice drawing it with the pistol empty and the striker cocked to insure you won't ever make the mistake of "catching" the trigger during a draw. I also recommend that for routing insertion or removal that the pistol and holster be treated as a package and you really must use a pocket holster that covers the trigger.

Yeah, I know I sound paranoid. However my first carry pistol was a Sig P239 with a DA trigger for the first shot that broke at a measured 10.5 lbs. So that Sig had a much more "forgiving" trigger and because there was also a hammer you could feel move in the event of a snagged trigger. So the way I handle my LC9S takes into account the lighter trigger and I have adapted how I do some things to insure I don't ever shoot myself by being "careless".

These go with me every step, every day. Two Taurus Views. They weigh 11 ounces loaded. 11 ounces loaded. Best compromise I have found for me so far. Still searching though.

Default STARTED AT THE BOTTOM & WORKED UP.

It would be hard not to go up the ladder from a davis & raven. Sorry but when you see all the beautiful wood & blue "real quality" wheel guns here, it's a bit hard not to consider those bottom feeders you mentioned here as being a bit "nerdy". NOT that I don't own any bottom feeders myself, about 50/50. My most currently used pocket gun would be a Seecamp 32, followed closely by a 640 no dash, & I don't wear skinny jeans either.

I am a pocket gun kind of guy, been carrying one for many, many years 24/7 wherever I am. My Sig P238 has been with me for about 7 years now and I use to also carry a Taurus 85 .38spl from time to time as well. However, over the last year or so, I no longer carry the Taurus, as I have switched to my new love, a Ruger LCR .327 Federal. My Sig .380 is 7+1 and the LCR is a 6 shot. I also wear loose clothing and they both disappear in my pockets.

I really feel that my J-Frame is remarkably versatile. It's okay in a pocket, IWB, OWB, shoulder rig...it works for many reasons. But when my cover garments call for something eminently carry-able, I go to my Kel-Tec P32. 8 rounds of FMJ goodness, quick reloads, and really light. It takes up no more space than a wallet!

Scooter you are rightly concerned with an AD on drawing the LC9s Pro
Did you have a look at the LC9s which is similar, but, does have a thumb safety. I bought one recently because it has the thumb safety which is positioned where it can be deactivated easily, but I don't think accidentally, on drawing the weapon.
Good luck!,

Hands down first pick best pocket gun has to be the S&W 642 or 638 in stainless variety. A very good quality modern revolver that is Plus P rated beats corrosion off well and is dead reliable. Easy to conceal and fairly accurate I cant really say enough good things about that type of revolver. If your one of those type that scorns little revolvers you seriously need to take an intelligent reevaluation of this little tiny hand cannon. My second pick would be a concealed hammer snubbie like the Charter Arms On or Off Duty or one of the many Ruger LCR revolvers or just about any good quality snub nosed revolver. They are the best all around do everything pocket gun plus one huge advantage to this type of gun is that no one can stop the action by grabbing the gun like some one could with an auto pistol. Also you can shoot a concealed hammer revolver in a coat pocket and it has a pretty good self defense cartridge. You can take them everywhere and you wouldnt even notice the gun on you. One problem! They only have 5 shots! So third pick has to be the Seecamp .32 or .380 autos! They are very expensive though which is a huge let down for how much money you pay for what little metal you get. Next would have to be one of the NAA autos but they are a little too heavy for pocket carry thats the only reason that is one of the last on my list. Next and very last would be the endless supply of the many plastic auto wonder gun variants. Glock 42 and the like are good. KAHRs are excellent! KelTecs are good. Kimber Solo and Beretta Nano big cartridge little tiny package! There are others that are given my rating of OKAY I GUESS. Which means I would have one if I couldnt get one of the above mentioned guns. Ruger LCP is okay I guess... The tiny Diamondback 380 are okay. Just be forewarned those tiny super light weight plastic wonders can be worse to shoot than a snub nose 357! Taurus PT22 and 738 models are decent I guess. You should probably stick to a center fire cartridge pocket gun just for self defense and reliability reasons and stay away from rim fire stuff. Bottom line is when it comes to a pocket auto rocket stick with name brands that are proven.

I left out a lot of good quality small guns on my list like some of the S&W autos and Sigs mostly because they are too big to stuff comfortably in a jeans pocket. If you havent noticed lots of pocket guns are disqualified to me mostly because of self defense carry reasons. Oh yes I forgot to mention the original pocket rockets like the little Browning vest pockets and little pocket Colts and ect. ect. Also I did not mention the many Colt single action tiny guns. Very good quality guns but my personal preference is that I would never carry a single action gun because I also carry a gun in the pocket with a round in the chamber. That would exceed my comfort zone with a single action only gun. I just dont do the John Wayne locked and cocked thing... Sorry! It has to be a double action gun to be on my best pocket gun list! Furthermore you never want to pull a gun and chamber a round in a self defense situation. These guns are not on my list because they are great for everything else but for a self defense every day carry situations. So there you have it the winner!

I don't believe in toting a gun loose in a pocket but I have purchased two Seecamp .32 a.c.p. pistols for that purpose. This is my son's.

I wound up with a S&W 638, alloy frame, stainless cylinder and barrel. Suitable for +P. I went to it from a Glock 36 and the 36 from a Colt Mustang.

I've been considering the LCP for some time but haven't made the move, mostly for financial reasons. I've been quite happy with a pocket-carried Smith 640 for some years now and prefer not to go below .38 Special, but the little Ruger is appealing. It's also highly recommended by some people on this for9um whose judgment I trust.

Very rarely pocket carry. When I do, I carry the Remington RM380. Decent little pistol.

I don't trust semi autos and for that reason I carry an LCR357 in my front jeans pocket.
I just bought an Ruger LC9s but I doubt I will replace the LCR with it. I really guess the only reason I bought the LC9s was because it was on sale for $312 otd. It will probably be a dang safe shelf filler.

Exactly what I came here to post. I also find it easier to draw a revolver from a pocket.

Dandyrandy, you said that no one could stop the action by grabbing the revolver they way they could with some autos. I don't understand. If I grab a revolver in your hand hard, unless you have already cocked it (which is generally frowned upon in defensive DA revolver shooting), it is not going to fire because the cylinder won't rotate. If I grab an auto in your hand, unless it has a visible hammer that I can get my fingers around, it is going to fire one round. In that sort of desperate situation, the auto comes out ahead.

Rotate the revolver in the opposite direction the cylinder turns and it will still fire. The auto could be pushed out of battery.

You're quite right about the "push-out-of-battery" thing, I forgot about that. I still think I could clamp down hard enough on a revolver to keep it from rotating (especially if my life depended on it!). You'd have to do something else to get my hand loose, which granted wouldn't be hard considering how decrepit I am.

RM380 for me, EDC. Chose it over a Seecamp. No failures. No safety except a long DA trigger, it's not ammo sensitive, ambi mag release (I shoot lefty), and most of my pants don't do well with my j frames.

If you are grappling with another person holding a revolver, and get your finger behind the trigger, it is then blocked. The revolver will not fire.

This happened about ten years ago in a home invasion. The elderly home owner lost his finger in the incident. He and his wife survived.

If you like plastic and 45acp, the Kahr PM45 is a great choice. Really well designed and of very high quality. I have eschewed all polymer guns only because I prefer metal, unfortunately it was not until after I bought mine that I realized that. It has been sitting in the safe since I got it. The ultimate pocket gun is the original S&W Bodyguard (49, 38, 649). My 649-2 in 38 special, IMO, is as good as it gets. Having SA/DA options is a real plus. It's the one and only "J" frame I own. 357 magnum in a little revolver is no fun for me.

I have a LCP Gen 2 that I usually drop in my pocket if I'm walking my dog in my neighborhood in a Remora holster. I recently purchased the LCP II and it does have a shorter pull trigger then the Gen 2. But I haven't started carrying it since I haven't found a holster I like for it yet. Remora said it should fit in the same holster but I don't like the way it does. I've seen online that a lot of people think the LCP II is dangerous with the light trigger pull and no safety. But I'm not too worried about that. Both have worked without a problem with 200 rounds each of Speer Gold Dot LE 90 grain HP's.

Did you not like the factory holster that came with the gun? I think it's a great holster but just a hair on the bulky side but I don't know of ANY pocket holsters that are made of thinner material.

No I didn't try to use it. It just doesn't feel right in my pocket and it was a little bulky as you mentioned. I'm a big Remora fan only because I can use them in a pocket or put it into my waistband if needed.

It's also highly recommended by some people on this for9um whose judgment I trust.
I realize that you are a man, in the know and I truly respect that, but do not fear going South of a .38spl if your thinking of the Ruger LCR .327 Federal Mag - That round will amaze you with it's performance. The Federal 100g JSP may even out perform a .38spl. The Federal 85g JHP is devastating close up. I do not recall exactly, at this moment, but I believe it comes out of that little Ruger, at about 1300 fps. I have tested mine by shooting at simple targets, one inch ply wood, 2x4s, gallons of water, etc and the results will amaze you.

I have a stainless PM9 and they can definitely be hidden pretty much anywhere. My giant hands dislike it unless it has the extended magazine. It's more of a backup than anything else, but mainly just sits in the safe.

Back in the 1900s around 1970s a S.C. HWP officer was killed with his own model 65. The man was fighting with him in the front seat of his patrol car for the gun. He took it from him and shot him six times. We all knew the Patrolman and went out of respect to the funeral home. One of the HPs pointed out that his trigger finger had been cut completely by the trigger guard on his 65. Truly a match of force to the death. The Patrolman's name was R.A. Mobley.

For a pocket gun I think a cz50 or cz70 pistol would serve us well.
