I had a Colt/UMC similar to that one, refinished by a previous owner. It was a nice pistol, wish I still had it.

I bought this one from a buddy and installed a Series 70 barrel and bushing into it. It shoots very well, but I don't use it a lot.
Haven't shot the MKIV, Series 70 pistol yet.

My 1937 Colt Commercial. British export marks date to the early/mid 1950's so this one has made some interesting travels. Several years ago it was a rusty & pitted pawn shop find. A local smith modernized and brought it back for a 2nd life...

The first pistol I ever bought, at 22 or 23, was a Colt 1911 Lightweight Officer Model. image.jpg

Here's some:

My first .45 was a 1911A1 Ithaca, bought in 1960. Since then, I used it while on active duty in the Army, and had it accurized to use in bullseye competition. Here it is with a Colt .22 conversion unit.

Someone once asked me if I like .45s. Yes, I do, and have acquired a number over the years. This photo appeared in my article on service .45s of the 20th Century in the 2003 Gun Digest.

One of my favorites in the group above is this near-mint example of a Colt 1911A1.

This photo of a WWI-era Colt 1911 appeared as the frontispiece in my book 101 Classic Firearms.

It also appeared on the closing page, with a quote from MOH recipient Alvin York.

This is my personal battery of more modern 1911s - Large, Medium and Small.

For defense use, this Kimber is my personal favorite of the group above.

John

Presently only three 1911 pistols reside in my safe, though I am itching for a fourth!

The inexpensive, but excellent ATI/Metro Arms FireStorm Government Model Deluxe. Upgraded with a Kensight adjustable rear sight and Recover Tactical Rail Grips.

The all business appearance of my Springfield Armory Range Officer was enhanced by a set of Stoner CNC G10 grips. I wish i could shoot this one enough to be wring out all its inherent accuracy! Love this pistol, which like my other two 1911's, I scored used.

My often pictured S&W Pro Series 9MM 1911. Wearing Stoner CNC G10 grips. The only 9MM I enjoy shooting more is my Browning High Power.

I sold this pistol a while ago, but I figured you might enjoy seeing it. Para Super Hawg Long slide. Looked great, but my Springfield handily out shot her, so down the road it went. The grips now reside on the Springfield.

Couple of WWII era 1911.
1943 Rem-Rand and a 1944 Ithaca.
I reckon the 1911 and the Colt SAA is my
favorite platform.

My one and only. Springfield Armory Loaded. Bought it used from a fellow several years ago for a great price only to learn later that it would not function. A new extractor and it has been a very reliable pistol.

my LBC Premier I, built in 1995 on a Caspian frame. Came with fixed sights and probably one of only a handfull that came to Germany back then. No bells, no whistles, just perfect quality craftmanship. I had the rear sight replaced with a STI adjustable Tactical sight, but today i would not do that again...
Accurate and reliable as hell, the gun won me lots of bullseye competitions in the past few years.

regards from Germany
Ulrich

I enjoy my 1911's. Even though it is just a RIA Tactical II, this 1 is fun to shoot. I like being a little different. It is a .40 S&W. Keep thinking about a .38 Super, but not sure why. Bob

Bob:

See my post #3 above.... I love my Colt Commander in .38 Super. Just bought an El Paso Saddlery "Tom Threepersons" holster off of eBay for it. Nice rig. Was a favorite caliber for the Texas Rangers and a lot of lawmen back in the thirties.

Best Regards, Les

WC145:

My 1st 1911 was a MKIV, Series 70 that I bought shortly after joining the PD. Sent it to Jim Hoag and had him install a red ramp on the front sight and put an S&W adjustable rear sight on the slide. It was then sent out and Hard Chromed. Good shooting gun, but I sold it off and have regretted it since then.

Nice Ithaca, Watchdog!!! Good photo also, like the gear and ammo...my photos seldom do justice to my guns. Well, I mostly take them with my IPad, but now that I have an iPhone 7, I think it has a better camera, so some of my latest photos are with my iPhone.

Anyway, that is a great looking 1911. I have a few, but always had in the back of my mind getting a WWII era GI model, since that's what I was issued on occasion in the Navy. Nostalgia, I guess.

Best Regards, Les

Last year I realized I had no 1911's and decided it was time to remedy that.

I looked and narrowed my choice to the new Colt Lightweight and a Colt Wiley Clapp CCO, when I couldn't decide I just bought both.

I apologize for the bad photos

My first 1911, a Springfield GI I bought brand new in 07. I saved and saved for it (two young kids, a wife that was just starting her career, and we were just moving into our own house).

I got it home, tore it apart, and promptly put "the scratch" on it. Learn something every day. I've swapped an earlier safety and some GI-style plastic onto it since. I've owned a lot of 1911s since then, but this one is a keeper to me.

An Argentine (Hartford-built) Colt I had rebuilt. When I got it it was painted green, had pink aluminum grips with FLAMES, beavertail, target sights, etc.

Vulcan Gun Refinishing in Ontario did it all for me and finished it with black oxide. The hammer is a bit funky but I haven't found one to replace it with yet. All serialed/Argentine stamped parts match except mag, and obviously incorrect hammer.

I wish I could find a before picture.

Holsters that cover the trigger are fine for striker fired pistols. Some say they're almost necessary.

But for 1911s? No.

A pair of Rock Island .45's I sold recently. Nice pistols but a kitchen reno needed some funding.

A Norinco I picked up a while ago, not sure what I'm going to do with it. If anything I'll change the sights. No China markings on it.

A 1914 Canadian contract Colt I bought for the barrel. The story was it took a hit from a bullet in the dust cover, and a post-war owner started cutting the damage away to repair it. I looked up the name engraved on the slide (Major E H Newman 19th Battalion CEF), and sure enough he was reported to be wounded on Sept 22, but able to remain on duty. I don't know if the pistol damage occurred in the same incident but its interesting to dig around.

Whatever the impact, it struck where the slide meets the dust cover. The slide was pushed in enough that the barrel was trapped and the guide rod and spring were damaged as well.

This is my Series 70- Gold Cup. I had the frame done in CPII as I have always wanted a 2 tone 1911. I have had this gun for over 40 years and love to shoot it. 99% of the rounds I have fired through it have been 200gr swc's over 5.0 of 231.

3) 2017, Smith & Wesson E-series 5" IMG_20170307_223043.jpg

These are all a pleasure to shoot and believe it or not , the hardest one for me is the Kimber with the Laser Grip. That's probably because these old eye's get fixated on the laser instead of the Target.

I have ZERO complaints about my Rock Islands. 5" Tactical 9mm, and 4.25" Tactical II, in .40 S&W. Shoot those 2 more than my Sig, & S&W. Bob
