Ruger Vaquero Birdshead 44
Found a great price on GB and it arrived pretty quickly. I'm hoping to get this to the range later today. It looks great and feels really good in the hand. It sure is a hefty chunk of steel, but the weight should help mitigate the recoil somewhat.

Range report on how those grips work when you are shooting would be appreciated . Have a old model Vaquero 44 with regular grips that is a good shooter but I like the way the birds heads look! Thanks

Just got back from the range. The gun shot quite well with all loads: 44 Special cowboy loads, Buffalo Bore heavy 44 Special 255 gr Keith, and Speer Gold Dot 240 gr 44 magnum. The magnum was a lot more snappy, but the birds head grip spread the recoil across my palm pretty well. The checkered stocks were rough on the hand with the magnum recoil. I plan on using it as a field gun and loading it with the BB heavy 44 Special loads.

Great looking 44. Wonder why Ruger quit making the birdshead?

Sweet looking smokewagon. What's the barrel length? It looks as though it might be 3 -3/4 inches. I have a Montado in .357 mag with that barrel length. It's a great handling and easily pointing handgun. Like your Birdshead, it's a chunk, but it's one of my favorite backcountry carries.

They might still be making them. The guy I got this from had 8 more in stock. And his price was $200 under suggested retail! No brainer.

Yup, 3.75 inches. I think it's the perfect size for a single action field gun. I really like the hefty feel and solid construction. Good American steel!
