Default New Colt commander

I thought I would ask here first since the Colt site is not as user friendly for me, so far.
I have a new combat commander that is shooting very tight groups 1.5" left@7yds.
I loosened the set screw and tried to drift the sight with a brass punch with no movement at all.
I stopped by my LGS and he had the same result.
Is the rear sight also loctited? Does any one know?
I will try to contact Colt tomorrow and see what they have to say.
It would be redundant to use a set screw and loctite.

Likely the sight was pressed into place and you are going to need something more heavy duty than a brass punch and ball peen hammer. A pusher is the usual solution. If your slide can "bounce" when you strike your punch, you're not going to move it if it is tight.

My smith had it in a vice but it still did not move. That was the farthest we went, brass punch and a ball peen.
I told him I will contact Colt for info and fire several different loads with accurate measurements before he puts the heat to the slide/sight.

I know Remington 45 Target ammo had a different POI compared to Winchester or Federal. Settle on your ammo before you change your sights! You might consider just holding off a little!

I wouldn't be letting anybody put heat to a slide to move a rear sight, that's just village smithy overkill. I highly recommend investing in a good sight pusher. It'll pay for itself in eliminating trips to the gunsmith, either to move the sight or to repair what you mangled trying other methods. No offense, speaking from experience here! If you shoot much you'll end up using it for other guns down the line too. I've had other people at the range come up to me and ask to adjust their sights when they saw me using it as well.

On a side note, it' a lot better if you can zero at say 25 yards, as shooting up close doesn't show changes very well.

Windage though? Usually different loads will print to different heights due to velocity, and to a much lesser extent with pistol rounds, ballistic coefficients. I kinda lucked out with both my Commander and my 4" 625, in that my target loads and my chosen factory SD loads hit the same POI at 25.

Yes, I'm going to run the mill with ammo before I do any more.
When he mentioned the heat treatment to loosen any loctite, that's when I stopped things.
There is no rush and heat does weird things to steel.

Heat is not going to "help." Don't do it. If you can't move the sight with a pusher you will have either to send it back to Colt or mill the existing sight away and properly fit and install a new one.

When I got back into 1911s a few years back, I was shooting to the left, My range officer at qualifications told me I had too much finger on the trigger. I was at the first joint. I moved it to my finger tip pad, where the fingerprint is. That solved my shooting to the left.

I'm with 'codenamedave' my sight pusher was one of the best buys I ever made. And, I never zero at any distance shorter than 25 yrds, if it is on there it will be on at any distance between there and the target, and if you know the trajectory of your round it will work all the way back to 100 yrds.

7 yds is close. It is probably the range of use in real life.
I want it zeroed there. 25 yds is fine also. If it's hitting zero there, it will be on at half that distance.

Have a couple of other people shoot your gun and see what it does in their hands. As has been pointed out, the gun may not be the issue.

The very thing that crossed my mind. My RIA Officer's .45 shot left the first time I fired it -- until I realized I had too much finger on the trigger. A move to the first pad cured things.

Thanks for the suggestions. I'll try them next time I shoot.
I shoot this the same way as my other 1911s, so I don't know if it will help me, but you never know until you try.
If I find that I do have to change my finger on this 1911, and not others, it will point to a worse problem for me.
The gun or trigger will have to go.

Go over to the Colt section of the 1911 Forum and ask around for BJT72, the guy in charge of the Colt Custom Shop.

He is always available on that forum, and is famous for making things happen when people have ANY issues at all with their Colts.
