Here's a pretty good review of the Victorinox Swiss Army knife called the Hunter model. Comes with handles in either red or green, the latter the sort of olive green worn by German hunters. Both colors feature a white outline of a roe deer buck, called rhebok in Germany. None of the Online reviewers tells the species; they just call it a deer.

The reason for this review now is that my son just sent me a sort of CARE package from Amazon. The highlights are one of these knives in green and a box of Twining's Ceylon tea, a variant that my local grocer won't stock, although they carry the Twinng's brand.

The tea is in a box that contains six of the usual tea boxes with 20 bags per box. Just in case we have any tea drinkers here...

I measured the main blade of the Hunter knife and it is 3.5 inches, a good useful length, big enough for emergency defense, if need be. That blade also locks, with a sliding lock release on one handle scale.

I also wanted the serrated blade meant for gutting game. It fares well for opening packages or for cutting seat belts in a crisis. Can also handle other tough cutting more quickly than will a conventional blade.

The corkscrew is the same size as on the basic 91mm (closed) knives, like the Spartan model. Odd not to have a longer one, like on the knife they once made for the German Army, but the smaller one does work, although it takes more effort than will a larger corkscrew.

Another tool that I wanted is a saw, larger than on smaller models like the Huntsman or Camper.

In lieu of a standard set of can opener and bottle opener, the former incorporating a small screwdriver, here we have a combo blade that will turn most screws, & open bottles and cans.

There's an awl and a toothpick and a tweezer in the handle.

I'm not too keen on using the gutting blade for the stated purpose, as blood, etc. may get in the knife's joints. But it has other uses, and will work for that, if need be.

This knife measures 111mm closed and is quite a bit heavier and thicker than a Spartan or Tinker model. I think it's better suited for carrying in a jacket pocket, a belt pouch, or in a pack than in a pants pocket.

Watch the video, and look for others. I saw a couple, one good one being in Castilian Spanish. I thought that most here would prefer an English version...

If you feel a knife this size with these features might suit your lifestyle, go for it. I think you'll be pleased. The locking blade is a real advantage, especially if you have to stab something or cut strokes off of a wooden stick. The saw can also get through branches to at least an inch thick. The gutting blade will slice rope better than a conventional edge, and many will like that aspect of the knife.

Overall, I think the Hunter is a very practical item to have if you need more than a normal pocket sized SAK. And I like that little Roe buck on the handle, which is textured nylon, not the ABS plastic (Cellidor) of the usual SAK's.

A nicely written and useful review. Thanks. IMHO, I don't think you should be worried in the least about animal blood on that knife. That is exactly for what it was engineered. Just use a fine brush like an old toothbrush, dish soap and warm water. Then let it dry out and then drop a fine oil in the joints. I use Rem Oil, but any light oil should be good. Heck, I even use WD 40 once in a while. That is a great knife. Enjoy it. ...

I used a SAK one fine day to gut out my mule deer in the field after I discovered that I had left my hunting knife back in camp. It worked just fine and the situation got me to thinking that perhaps the big fixed blade knife carried on my belt perhaps wasn't necessary as much as I had believed. My hunting knives started to get smaller each year after that incident. ..............

Great review, T-Star. Good information in there. Makes me want to have one although I think my hunting days are over.

Big Cholla: When I was stationed in Alaska in the mid 1960s, I and a friend went hunting caribou. We both put one down, I use my Buck sheath knife on mine. He had forgotten a knife, and I gave him my SAK to use. It did just fine in cleaning a medium sized caribou, about 200 pounds.

Cyrano-

We had another post this week about a man who forgot his hunting knife. A SAK sufficed on his deer, but apparently, your pal also forgot even a pocket knife! (See Big Cholla's post in this thread.) Because a basic knife is used for more than just opening game, I do like a blade of about five inches, sometimes longer if one doesn't have an axe or hatchet. I do not like pounding a knife through bone, one of the most common ways to chip an edge or break a blade.

This sort of thing (forgetting a knife) just astounds me!

But thanks for your fine account of that hunt.

Whenever I see your old Buck Model 102, I'm reminded of a Prince Valiant comic strip that featured a giant on an island. His knife was badly sharpened down, and Valiant gave him a new knife. I'm surprised at some of the things I recall...

I arrived in Alaska at near the end of 1967. I was there until the middle of 1971. So, I guess we just missed each other. I used my SAK mainly on Salmon and Graylings. Alaska is where I started learning that big hunting knives more or less just got in the way of doing a good job on cleaning game.

In my defense as to forgetting my hunting knife and leaving it in camp.....I had a substantial sheath for it on my belt and it was under many layers of clothing as the morn was pretty cold. I did the usual check of gear as I walked out of camp and did feel the knife sheath. Of course the hunting knife was lying on the camp table and not in its sheath. I learn from my mistakes and from then on I carried a second smaller hunting knife in my backpack. It has been said that a 'knife person' will carry multiple knives. From then on I carried three knives while hunting. And now even today as more or less a spectator of life's events, I carry two knives every day. .....

I carry a SAK Tinker in my left pants pocket and a Emersion 4" folder every day. When camping with the family, I change out the Tinker for a Camper I bought in Mexico (ca.1973), and carry it in a Buck leather case on mu belt. It is the only Camper I have seen with a serrated main blade.

Years ago I had a Victronox folding knife. That knife was a 2 blade design, The first blade was about 3 or 3.25 inches, the second was the same length but was a saw with a bottle/can opener and large screwdriver on the end. The scales were dull green and had the Mauser logo on one side.

Around 1990 this non-SAK was my daily carry knife. One of our Missionaries from South Africa saw me using it and fell in love with it. So it is in Afrika now (along with a Mark X mini Mauser in 223 I sent with him!)

About 6 years ago I found (laying on the ground) an almost identical knife with the Walther logo on the black scales. These knives are about 1" longer and are much thicker than a typical 2 blade SAK. While handy for certain tasks, just a little too large for most American pants pockets.

I have a German Army knife similar to these and carry it
in a coat pocket or in a belt pouch with the Victorinox logo.

Mine is a Vic., but other contractors also made that knife, and a number were sold as surplus.

I left in May of 1968, went to Ft Bragg for MACV school, then Ft Bliss for a month of Vietnamese language training, then off to 'the funny country' for a year.

The pattern is known as a German Army Knife, or GAK. Typically it will be about 4 1/4" closed, with a 3 1/4" spear blade and a saw, both opening on the same end.

My Mauser-branded Victorinox GAK also has a third spring and a clip blade similar in length to the others. This is a commercial version, never intended for military use. I got it either from Brookstone or LL Bean sometime in the early '80s.

I have carried this knife only infrequently, as it makes for quite a lump in the pocket.

I didn´t know about this model, just ordered one.I think it will fit in the leather pouch that I bought 15 days ago. This is interesting - it´s a Minas Gerais State located town called - Dores de Campos. They specialize in leather artifacts such as cell phones and small knives pouches as well horse saddles

Ray-

Did you order the knife from a Brazilian dealer? From the USA or Switzerland? Are Victorinox knives widely available there, at least in larger cities like Sao Paulo or Rio?

What are your knife laws like? How long a knife can you carry? Here in Texas, the blade has to be no longer than 5.5 inches.

The longest blades that I carry in a belt pouch in cities are four inches, like on a Puma copy of the Buck Model 110. My Gerber Applegate-Fairbairn Combat Folder may be longer. My most common belt knife in town is a Benchmade Model 710. I just measured the blade; it's four inches, 10cm.

Note that the blade on the Victorinox Hunter locks open. That makes it illegal in some countries, like the UK.

I've read that diners in southern Brazil and in Argentina bring up meat to their mouth on a fork and then use their knives, even gaucho knives, to cut the meat off just beyond the mouth. Is that true?

Hi Texas I ordered it from a brazilian dealer.Victorinox are all over the place, even in smaller towns. This one is not so common though, but I found a dealer who had them in stock.Laws ( God pity us and to hell with legislators !) says 10 cm maximum blade lenght.
I just got anothe lockback folder that I´m liking very much, it´s a Kershaw WildCat Ridge. It´s a very sturdy 3,5 inch blade knife, and I´m carrying it in the aforementioned leather pouch.

If Victorinox wants an assured sale to me they could make that 111 mm pattern with only long blades, Trapper style. A metal file/saw, wood saw, serrated blade and clip blade would cover just about every thing. Given my choice on the back side I'd have #2 and #3 Phillips heads. The flat heads could be on the ends of the saws. They can leave their cap lifter, can opener and cork screw for liberal tourists.

I scrolled 'way down on that linked page and found two pouches that will probably fit the Hunter. One seems to be olive leather, although it says nylon; the other def. nylon. I'll call them with a few questions, but probably order one or the other.

After playing with the Hunter for a few days, I like it better all the time.
