Question for Colt guys.
Is the Police Positive a "D" frame? I was looking at some grips for my Diamondback and saw that along with all the usual guns that I do know that they were also listed to fit the Police Positive. I've never owned a Police Positive and was curious?

I do believe that they are. That's why I have hope that, having brought back the "Cobra" (really a stainless Detective Special), Colt will bring back the Police Positive with a 3-4" barrel.

I think that prior to 1966, Colt frames were longer. Grips for newer frames won't fit older guns. Or, at least, I don't see how.

I'm at work and don't have access to my Serven book on Colts, but I recall there being two different D frame grip lengths.

...Police Positives are "D" frame...same as the Detective Special...Cobra...only the very early Detective Specials were square butt...they became round butt around 1933 if my recollection is correct...
...my 1919 Police Positive Special in 38 Special I acquired last fall...same as the very early Detective Special square butt...except with a five inch barrel...

It's not a matter of round vs. sq. butt guns. But in 1966, Colt began making the frames of other D=frame guns shorter, as on the Agent.
The Det. Spcl. and Cobra still had longer stocks, the wood extending below the shorter steel frame.

Thanks.
I knew about the long and short frames. Many grip makers solve that problem by simply enclosing the backstrap and putting in two sets of holes for the grip pins. That way the same grip will fit both styles.
Like I said, I've never owned or even had a chance to examine a Police Positive closely. For some reason I had always thought that they were closer to a K-frame in size.

To me, it's the ultimate CC Colt revolver and the only one I have. I'd go for a pre-WWII DS, but those seem to be way out of my price range these days.

Look at the attached pictures for an illustration. The Colt DS on the right is from 1961, the one on the left from 1970. The second photo shows the 1970 stocks, which overlap and join at the bottom, so the outside dimensions are still identical, for example for purposes of attaching grip adapters.
