Default Colt- please help identify model, year and value

Hi everyone,

Here is another one from my fathers collection. It's a Colt. Please help me with the model, year and value. The serial #Y18XXX. The barrel measures 8". No box or tools. Thanks again.

Teresa

Two websites you want to check out are proofhouse.com for serial number/manufacturing dates and coltfever.com for general information by model.

It is a Trooper Mark III. The 8" barrel and rounded grips indicate that its a later production gun.

Go to this site: Colt Serial Number Lookup and enter the full serial number to get the year of manufacture.

Value is hard for me to say. In General, Mark IIIs are less desirable than other Colt revolvers. Usually in the $600-800 range. I recently bought a 6" .357 Mark III for $625 which I thought was an excellent price.
However, prices on Colt revolvers have been sky rocketing recently and add that this is a scarce .22 with a 8" barrel makes it even more valuable.
I'm by no means a Colt expert. But if it were mine, I'd be thinking in the $1200-1500 range. I'm sure one of our resident Colt experts will be along soon with a better idea of value. It may well be worth much more.

I have always wanted one of Trooper MK IIIs in 22 LR and I see them for sale occasionally either at a price point well above my affordability, or often beyond what I would be willing to pay. In fact, right now my local Cabela's store has one in their gun library priced at around $1200 with a 6" barrel, if that gives you any indication on value, though this gun has been in their case for close to two years now at that price. My attempts to try to negotiate a better price have fallen on deaf ears, and thus there it stays.

It seems that outside of the Python, Cobra, and Diamondback DA revolvers, the rest don't seem to sell very well. Why that is, I cannot say. The original Trooper 357 I had a few years ago was one heck of a quality revolver at a $600 price point, though just not quite as good as my S&W 28-2.
