Default Any l.c.smith experts on here?

I have this l.c.smith filed grade and am trying to determine the value. It is a 16 gauge field grade serial number 73,0xx. It's in really nice shape with one small ding on one barrel. Stock is really nice. The butt plate and underside disk was replaced (disc was chipped and still have original, butt had a orange rubber recoil pad which had disintegrated so a repro was put on with original screws. I'll try and post pics. Any info on age and value is super appreciated

About a 1924/1925 mfg.
Featherweight frame (as opposed to the 'regular frame')
Ser # should have FW prefix to it on the action flats.
It'll have FWE (E for ejectors) if it so featured, but I don't see them in the pics.

Small bore SxS's (16, 20, 28 & 410) bring a premium over the 12's. Condition dictates value like every other firearm. The shotgun has lost it's case color frame finish, so collectors wouldn't be interested. Though there are several restoration businesses that will re-do the gun for you at a price that'll exceed the finished value!.
The replaced butt plate and grip cap would also turn the true collectors off. Don't take that as a tire kickers slap at your shotgun, that's just how a certain segment of the market would look at it. The butt plate needs a bit of trimming and finishing to complete the fit. They are nice compliments to the stock and shooters appreciate them better than a squished out old brittle pad hanging on there. Keep that old grip cap even though chipped and pass it along or at least offer it to the next owner if the gun is sold.

If the bbls are original length (un-cut),,and that is a Big Deal in the SxS world in terms of both $$ value and simple desirability, the gun keeps a lot of it's worth.

The small dent in the bbl is common and not big deal. MAny are shot with them like that, easy to remove though by a 'smith with the right tools and know how.
The gun may have the shorter 2 9/16" chambers common from that era in 16ga. I don't remember the exact change over date on LCS to 2 3/4 for 16ga,,if there even was such a date.
Plenty of the short chambered guns get shot hand have been with 2 3/4" shells for the last 80+ yrs. But you can buy 2 9/16" shells right from RST and others now and have them sent to your door if that's what you need.

Good mechanical shape,,safety works right, no stock cracks, uncut bbls, guns locks up tight , not 'off face', no bore pitting that looks like moon craters, matching ser#'s on the frame, bbls, forend assemblys,,ect, ect.
A shooter 16gs LCS like that (not much orig finish and a few alterations but nothing major would be in the $800 +range IMO.
Perhaps the 1K mark could be reached if the right buyer was found and in the right area where shotgunning and vintage SxS's are popular as well.
If it had or does have ejectors,,then it's a $1200 to $1400 gun in most places with everything else staying the same.

just my 02.

Wow thanks. Yes it does have FW before the serial number and all pieces have the same numbers. Bird looks great with no corrosion visible. Thanks again. Now to decide to keep or turn into something else

2152 is spot on with his evaluation. A lot of LC's in 16 can be a bit on the heavy side, pushing 7 lbs. If it is 6 1/2 or less it would be more appreciated by an upland hunter. To really check it out, pull the locks off to see how badly the stock head is cracked. Any vintage shotgun will have cracks, it is just those on an LC are easier to see, and require a bit more skill to properly address. It is a really nice shotgun that is a great shooter, entry level SxS. Nothing super rare, but a wonderful learning experience to start down the slippery slope of the side by side world. Think of it as a S&W 28 of the LC Smith world.

I have a " Hunters Arms " 12 gr SXS , with external hammers . It hung in a gunshop for 3 yrs . Once a yr the owners widow would come into the shop and ask about it . I had been wanting a SXS 12 ga to go along with my 10 gr Ithica SXS , exposed hammers . I pd $350 for the 12ga . Never really thought about it being a good price or not . Shoots fine . I don't push hot and heavy loads through it .

Default I concur

Mr. 2152 gave you a very thorough evaluation and agree with him on all counts other than I think he may have been generous with his value. At retail in our local shops here in eastern pa these guns are fairly common and sell for 600 or 650. I enjoy all my old guns, especially the "working mans grade" !
