Default She has a good eye.

Last week my mother wanted me to help her pick out her first pistol, now for me that was the most exciting thing I could have been asked to do since she's not too crazy as far as guns go. So I go over to her house, pick her up and we head to the lgs that I go to almost 90% of the time. Have my friend show her a few guns from the case, then she asks to see a gun that he hadn't pulled out of the case. It was full size and it had a nice trigger on it.. I mean a really nice trigger for being a stock gun, plus it has a 19 round capacity (9mm). While I'm trying to talk her into an m&p 2.0 or something of the sort she is pretty much already sold on the one she pulled out. So she buys it and she asks if she can use the range with it for a bit. We go back to the range, and she fires a mag and asks me to fire a mag.. let me tell you this thing shot better than my m&p performance center did straight out of the box, Sights were dead on, and (being a full size) had no recoil to be felt. You could not miss or shoot off target with the thing, that's how nice it shot. I asked her how much she paid for it, she told me 363 after tax and all, I nearly passed out. A $363 gun better than my $600 pc.. we go to leave, and I ask my friend who makes that, he tells me century arms makes it, I had a moment of blasphemy due to I've never had or seen anything good come from century arms but this gun was beautifully good it wasn't perfect but it's good, and what more could you really ask for. If y'all get an opportunity please go try out the century arms canik, I'll bet you it'll be a good addition for a good range trip. Best part is, (aside from spending time with my mother) I didn't even have to guide her into a direction she did it by herself and that made my day if not year.

Great story. I'm glad you mom understands how important it is to be able to defend herself. Many women would never consider owning or using a gun.

I don't know about new pistols but less than $500 will get you a rifle these days that will be 1 MOA right out of the box. I bought one for $350, put a good scope on it for $150 and bingo, 1 MOA. Never heard of such a thing. Howa Mini .223 and Leupold VX1. Looks like mud, shoots like a thousand dollars.

Maybe it's like that old carpenter told me once, "A thing of beauty is a joy forever. But some times and ugly thing works just as well."

I was honestly surprised when she called me and told me she was buying a gun. I've had plenty of them times when the glass costs way more than the gun it's self. It tends to usually work out well for some reason.

Can't go wrong with the Canik, I had one, and I liked it a lot. For the price you get a lot for the money: a gun that's fairly accurate and reliable with all kinds of ammo, a holster, 2 mags, cleaning bushes, interchangeable backstraps, and a nice case to keep it all in. Mine only needed some tweaking of the sights to get it dialed in, after that she shot very well.

My only gripe, and the reason I ultimately traded the Canik for something else, was the difficulty in finding extra mags and accessories. At the time I was looking for a gun to try IDPA with, and this seemed like a good one for the price. However I live in a state that does not allow high capacity mags, and finding extra 10 round mags proved to be very difficult, even online. Likewise, finding an alternate holster for it, i.e. a leather OWB for more comfortable, practical carry was near impossible as well. All my LGSs stock the Canik, but not a single one stocks accessories for them despite the gun selling fairly well, and its a bit frustrating. I don't see this being an issue for the average purchaser however, and I am very glad to hear your mom likes it.

My son gave me a Canik TP9SA for Christmas. Came with two 18 round Mec Gar mags, almost a holster, mag loader, bore brush and patch rod, and a nice case. We've taken it out a couple of times and ran about 300 rounds through it, not one hitch and shoots where you point it and easy to hold on target. I'm 65 and he said I should "upgrade" from my revolvers. Had a lot of fun shooting it, but think I'll stick with carrying my revolvers.

Default Holsters

I had to remember the name. MDJ Custom Holsters makes holsters for the CAI Canik pistols. I ordered a hybrid OWB from them, perfect fit and adjustable retention. Costs less than $40. Free shipping. Check it out. Can't help with mags, but two 18 rd. seems enough for anything else but all out war.

A local paramilitary gun shop has sold the Century Arms Canik pistols as fast as he gets them from his distributor. I've handled a couple, they are very well built, quality pistols for under $400.
The other good, but less expensive pistol which flies out of his case is the polymer frame Tanfoglio Witness in 9mm or 40 S&W, also less than $400 OTD.

I've been meaning to try the witness. I've never had an opportunity, I've heard it's almost like an iwi jericho except polymer

Good for you alexfitch225, first on taking mom to the lgs and second for allowing her to select a firearm that fit her!

That is a great story Alex. I'm happy your mother found a firearm that fits her needs without spending a fortune. It's always good to hear another person is enjoying our hobby. It's a great hobby with many benefits, self confidence and self defense are just two of the positives.

Thank you very much. Tomorrow she and I are going to the range so she can get some practice. Any pointers? I'm not the best instructor, I just aim, point and shoot and it groups good not sure how I do it.

Yes, the Witness is a polymer framed Jericho clone.

Century Arms is just the importer of the Caniks. IIRC they setup CanikUSA to import them. They guns themselves are made in Turkey. Century Arms rep is **** for the guns that they assemble from eastern bloc kits, IE AK47s.

the canik tp9 series is a great pistol, I now own two (tp9sa , and a tp9sf)and have a preorder in on the new tp9sfx.

I own a lot of glocks as well as other name branded polymer guns and I prefer the canik over the glock 17/19, as well as the sig 290, and my polymer cz 75.

both of mine were shooting to point of aim out of the box, and they have fed everything I have thrown at them

I have never had anyone who shot one that did not like the gun

your mother picked a great gun at a reasonable price point, if she got the tp9sa, show her how the decocker works and how easy it is to reset the striker

my older brother who owns a cz75 bought one of the tp9sa, after shooting mine and like me, he liked the ideal of having a loaded round with a dead trigger and short reset feature of this pistol

she could have spent more money, but IMO she could not buy a better polymer frame gun

I tried to talk my wife into carrying once. I said here is something to think about for the next couple of weeks, could you kill someone to protect your life. The answer was no, so I got her a can of pepper. I have a model 637 that would be perfect for her, but it sits in the safe with it's sister a new model 60. I have one striker fired pistol, a Ruger Custom LCP. It shoots fine, but it will be the last one I ever buy.
