You will rarely find any kind of name on these custom guns created by private gunsmiths. It was commonly thought decades ago that Python barrels were magically accurate. However, Pythons were expensive, the actions hard to work on and the revolver was prone to go out of time.

Python barrels could be bought and fitted to S&W K-frame guns and Ruger Security Six revolvers. The S&W conversions were called 'Smythons' or 'Smolts'. Ruger conversions are called Cugers or Cougar(you can spell it any way you want).

When Smith & Wesson came out with the L-frame 586/686 guns in the early 1980s, the demand for Python barrel conversions waned.

That $600. price isn't bad. Try haggling it down a bit and buy it.

Wow - blast from the past! The "Smolts" and "Cougars" were fairly unusual, and pricey back in the days of the wheelgun. As I recall, the major advantage of these revolvers was the looks and greater accuracy of the Colt Python barrel, along with the stronger lock work of the S&W and Ruger. I believe just about all of these were made for competition use - so I'd really inspect it well if you are interested in buying it. If it were me and the piece checked out okay, I'd have already bought it.

Good luck,

Dave

What 00-Dave said....... $600 seems OK

But I'd prefer a Smolt......... but haven't seen either in decades.

If it was in decent shape, I'd buy it; however I prefer the smolt. Some are very well done, while others look to be cobbled by bubba.

The Security six is a great very strong duty type revolver that will last you a lifetime and then some. The Python barrel is no doubt a more accurate barrel than the standard Ruger barrel that came on it. If mint I'd say 600 isn't bad considering the Python barrel.

Default Colt + Ruger

Your new revolver is a combination of some of the best goods available and will likely be a prized possession. Use it and be proud.

Oooooh and it's stainless! I still prefer "Smython" to "Smolt".

It wasn't just the accuracy legend of the Python barrel. It was also the only "full-lug" heavy barrel on a production revolver. Rather than fabricating heavy barrels somebody came up with this idea. It was rather trendy. Legend has it that S&W got sick of seeing Python barrels on their guns and developed the L frame with it's Pythonesque barrel. That kind of killed this conversion.

Most Smolts and Cougers were built to give PPC competitors an edge over their competition. In PPC they were superseded by custom 3 1/2 to 4 pound bull barrel S&Ws that were later superseded by automatics. The remaining PPC revolver class is Distinguished Revolver which only allows trigger jobs and minimal open sight and stock upgrades. Consequently custom PPC revolvers that were very expensive to build usually change hands at affordable prices. For ordinary folk who have to consider their budget Smolts offer nothing over L frames and Ruger created a .357 of similar weight in their GP-100s. However, Smolts and Cougers have undeniable novelty appeal and I wouldn't mind having a pair.

By the way, members have posted their Smolts built on Model 28s. Since N frame barrel threads are larger than Python threads metal had to welded on. N frame Smolts are not common.

When Bullseye was the dominant sport, a lot of serious shooters had their K 38s rebarreled with Colt Officers' Model Match barrels. S&W barrels had a twist of something like one turn in 18 1/4 inches, which had 148 gr wadcutters teetering on the edge of instability at 50 yards. Somtimes you could see a little tail on the bullet hole. I think one of Gil Hebard's catalogs had an article about this. The Colt barrels had a twist of one turn in 14 inches which gave adequate stability. I ran into that myself. I had a 8 3/8 inch barreled K 38 which I used for silhouetta shooting. I loaded up some wadcutters and tried them. At 25 and 50 yards there was no problem. At 75 yards they were all over the target and at 100 yards most of them weren't even on the backstop.

Very nice looking revolver. I like Ruger six series revolvers, and I'll bet that one shoots very well.

I am curious how the cylinder locks up. It looks like the python barrel does not have a locking bolt to lock the front of the ejector rod? Is there a ball detent?
