Default Shooting a T/C Encore in .600 Nitro Express

I had the opportunity to touch off two rounds of .600 Nitro Express today from a T/C Encore with a Match Grade Machine aftermarket barrel chambered for the .600NE. It was ... an experience.

Photos attached, with a .30-06 cartridge for size reference.

Rocked ya back a little, didn't it?
I once fired a .45/70 single action revolver, custom made by a 'smith in Texas. Quite a handful it was!

Why on earth would anyone go to all the trouble to make a custom barrel like that, and then not put sights on it? I'd shoot it, at least twice just to make sure.

Based on the recoil and muzzle flash I'd say this was some type of reload/handload.
A full factory would be much more dramatic and PAINFUL! Not to mention the expense per shot.

An excerpt from "Apples Like Black Boulders"

As I moved through the brush, I fingered the hammer on my .600 Nitro TC. I could feel death in the air, and smell it, too. It was damn putrid. Then I saw it. The buffs rear end was pointing right at me with his tail pointing at the sky. Right toward the top of Kilimanjaro. I whispered to Magoomba, 'Is an *** shot legal?" "I don't see anything" said Magoomba looking away. As the apples fell like black boulders, I squeezed the trigger....

R. Hemingway

Though Earnest's brother Ralph was a prolific writer when the public was hungry for exotic action and adventure, he died penniiess.

I had a Bear Buster in 45/70. It was all I wanted for recoil, promptly
traded that dude off for a couple Varmit cal. Barrels. I know that barrel
has had at least 4 owners since me, and I don't know how many previous
owners. Every one thinks they need it, until they shoot it. Nobody wants
to admit they are a Sissy, so it is quietly passed on to the next Idiot.

A long while back when big bore single shot pistols were just getting going I saw pictures of some guy who built a bolt action pistol that fired 458 win mags. Thing had 2 grips that came out at about 90 degrees from each other, so you gripped it well with both hands. He was a big guy and laying down prone and firing it lifted him about 8 inches of the ground. Crazy.

I have had a Contender for a long time. Got it as a 222 Remington and added 30 and 357 Herret barrels. Made some large grips for it and that helps a lot, but hey it does recoil. Got a 500 S&W too. But, there is a practical limit to what you can hold onto and fire. Full blown 600 Nitro. Not me thanks anyway.

I now know why the end of the barrel is shaped like a cannon. I can think of one good use for it. take it prarie dog hunting. set two shooters up on the edge of the town. go out to the middle of the town and touch off a round in a hole and blast all the pasture poodles out of the other holes. while you go to the hospital to get your cast on your wrist your friends will have a ball shooting pasture poodles standing around with their front feet over their ears wondering what the heck just happened. lee

Default Not So Fast

The 600 Nitro Express launches a 900 grain bullet at 2000 FPS. The recoil and rise displayed in the video suggests a much reduced load.

Quite dramatic. Did they force you to shoot it indoors? Bet several seismographs picked up the blast

I knew a guy some years back that had a .308 Win barrel for his Contender. The first shot he fired split the web of his hand.
He sold it without ever firing it again.

I've felt the same way about some of the Governors and .500 S&Ws that are out there on the market.

To answer many of the questions in here:

- The cartridges were factory loads purchased from Kynoch.
- The price is $180/5, or $36/ea.
- It definitely hurt - 2nd shot more than the 1st.
- I had to shoot it indoors.

And finally:
- My dinosaur hunt is booked for August. It'll be on Isla Nublar, about 120 miles off the coast of Costa Rica. Jurassic Park has fallen on hard times and recently opened the park to sport hunters to pay the bills.

I fired a TC with a 45-70 factory barrel a few years ago. Factory ammo somewhere around 350 gr. bullet. Even with a 14" barrel, the barrel flip was so great there is no way any of us could hold the gun down. The post firing position of hold was nearly straight up over my head. If offered the opportunity today I would decline the offer.

That's a completely insane pairing of cartridge and firearm. What next, a .375 H&H derringer?

Looks like a very light load by the lack of recoil! I have a contender with a 10 inch barrel rechambered to 45/120 that kicks more than that.

An Encore with a 15" .308 Win barrel has been my deer gun for the last 8 or 9 years. I'm a responsible hunter, so 1 shot is all I need, thus a single shot works fine for me. I DO practice with it.
Never felt any pain, and certainly never got wounded. Maybe its all in the grip...

There is a video on the web of such a phenomenon. It was either .577 or .600. The gun flew backward out of the shooter's hands just clearing the top of his forehead. The gun is out of the video frame in a split second. Something tells me had it made contact with the shooter's head, he wouldn't be with us anymore.

Edit:
Found it

This clip shows an actual .600 NE hunting load fired from a traditional heavy double. No way does whatever is in that pistol contain more than a fraction of the regular loading. Doesn't matter what a tough guy the shooter is, it's physics ...

Default I think a lot of us like....

I think a lot of us like holding power in our hands, kinda like a Harley bike. But I'd add the qualifier that I like CONTROLLED power. I these days I don't like guns that hurt me. I still like to feel some power but I've got nothing to prove.

That's worth a couple new hole punches in your Man Card!

Looks like the shooter was rocked back about the same amount in the OP and the double rifle vid. Remember, out of the short barrel the velocity and thus recoil impetus will be greatly reduced. There's a good chance it only burned a fraction of the powder to begin with. The biggie in the flying pistol vid looks like he's holding a .22, leaning back and not using the off hand for recoil control. His lack of a hard grip could be inferred by the fact that he first thought to shoot it one handed.

Prolly cuz he knew nobody would be shooting it seriously. Lessee: Check functioning, zero at various ranges, couple different loads, then off to practice for the hunt... yeah, nah.

Yep.... the .454 Casull is my top limit also. I did OK shooting a friends 6-inch Freedom Arms M-83, but it convinced me that anything larger would not be much fun.

No thanks. I'll take mine in the 17lb Westley Richards double variety....and that wasn't fun either. I'm kinda a wimp, .505 Gibbs is my top end.

I thought the cannon barrel shape a most excellent touch.
All I can say is .... with factory loads , I wouldn't have shot it !

Saw a .50BMG single shot bolt action pistol for sale once at a gun show. I shoot a .50BMG bolt gun so I was curious and asked the guy if he had ever fired it. Only once was his reply!
