Default Bad News...

In another post I had mused about the idea of picking up one of the new Walther Creed handguns. I did get a chance to fondle one a few weeks ago, and was impressed by the decent trigger pull, and low price point (lower priced than the Canik TP9SA or SF), though I was a bit irked by the huge slide and Hi Point-esque look to it.

Well, apparently in the few weeks that have passed since the first time I saw the Creed, they have been pulled from sale here in CT. According to the guys at my LGS, the state has a problem with the magazines that Walther designed for them, claiming that they can be easily modified to except more than 10 rounds. I did not look closely at the mags so I don't know how true it is, but none the less, it has temporarily stopped the sale of this gun, and the PPX, which I am told uses the same mags. This should not prove to be a problem in states that don't have capacity restrictions, however.

So, being that I could not buy a Creed to play with, I chose something else instead at the same price point: a quote "used" unquote Glock 17 Gen 3. I use the term used lightly, as I know the gun has been fired, but could not have had more than 100 rounds through it total. It is in immaculate, near new condition with the only signs of wear being a small knick on the outside edge of the rear sight. The gun included the original plastic case, a 10 round mag, and the original paperwork sans the test cartridges, so I have no idea when it was made. The store owner told me he took it in on trade from someone who had bought it as a CCW gun, found it a bit too big, and traded it for a Glock 43 instead.

There's not much to say about it, other than my range trip last night definitely proved that the 17's reputation is well earned, and I had quite a bit of fun with it. I have shot a Glock 17 on many occasions previously, in fact it was the first handgun I ever shot before I got my handgun permit, I just have never owned one before. The 17 was also the gun that brought my attention back to polymer guns within the last few years, and I am happy to now have one of my own.

Pictured below: The Glock 17 is a perfect companion to my FMK 9C1G2 (Glock 19 clone), which, for those of you who may or may not have seen my update earlier this week, has proven to run flawlessly with just about any FMJ ammo I put through it, following a thorough cleaning.

The Creed feed ramp is still a separate piece, like the PPX's. It wasn't dependable on the PPX and I'd be leery of it.

PPX barrel with loose feed ramp, and the Creed barrel with same separate ramp design.

I was being a bit facetious with the bad news part Bad News.... Honestly, getting a Creed was more about the curiosity than anything else, the Glock 17 has been on my want list for a while, however it was never high enough up the list to buy a new one, and used prices on them, when they show up for sale, tend to be outrageous. I've seen two other used 17s for sale recently, one priced at $460, the other $550, both were Gen 3s if I recall. When this crossed my path at $375, there was no question whether or not I should buy it. Not a steal I suppose, but it's a practically brand new gun for a little over half of new retail around here. As for the Creed, the more I read about them, the less I think I want to invest time and money into one. When one comes my way used for a decent price I still might give it a try, for now I think I'm good.

Pictured below: This is why I love the Glock 17 - three separate groups of between 5 and 10 shots, nearly all within the 4 inch circles at 15 yards. There aren't many handguns that I can shoot that well with. My FMK and XD9 come close, but I could never get such a good grouping out of other guns even at half the distance.

I have my second G17 on layaway. Around here Gen 3 and older are very popular. You'll never see an old G19/17 sit on the shelf. They are bought up as quickly as they come in. My current gen3 17 was an old police gun. I use it in training classes. This current one on layaway is an old gen2. S# puts it in 1993. Comes in the old style box. Looks like it was never shot.

Not really bad news, at least not for me, I was kidding around a little bit. The bad news really stands for anyone who really wanted to buy a Walther Creed here in CT. I know one LGS has already sold a few, and there are certainly worst choices for handguns available. I assume that Walther will straighten out the mag nonsense and it will be back up for sale sometime soon.

What bothers me about this situation is the sudden crackdown on these so-called easily modified 10 round mags. What's to stop the state from banning others that can be "easily modified", i.e. the long 10 round mags for the 15-22, or any pistol mag that could be fitted with a +1 adapter?

Again, this is not a problem for most of you, and believe me, if I could pack up and move, I would. For the at least the short term, I am stuck here in CT, as are many of my fellow passionate gun owners, so rather than brush us off, or tell us to move, help us continue to thrive here. Just being able to own a firearm here in CT is a thorn in our governor's side, so anything that we as a shooting community (manufacturers included) can do to allow us to promote and continue to enjoy the sport within the confines of the law is greatly appreciated.

My hubby's PPX was a really good shooter, that even novices shot well. It bothered him to part with it, but the design of the failed feed ramp would have made him uncomfortable using it for anything but a range toy.

Shooting his PPX so well, was what prompted me to get my first full size semi-auto, CZ-75B.

Enjoy your new Glock.
