Default An interesting 1911

I purchased a Colt 1911 with an interesting roll mark. It said, "Property of the State of New York." I found it in my local gun store here in Central TX.

Some Google searching revealed a story of 1911's being recalled by the Army from (some?) National Guard units when the Korean War was heating up. The NY National Guard ordered some 1911's to replace these re-called pistols.

In late November I sent off for the Colt Archive letter for this pistol. It came today, March 18th.
It showed:
"Property of State of New York" is engraved on the slide.
Sold to: Albany Hardware and Iron Company Albany, New York.
Shipped to: State of New York
State Quartermaster
New York State Arsenal
201 64th Street Brooklyn, New York
Date of Shipment: December 16, 1950
Colt Factory Order: #7078
Number of Same Type Guns in Shipment: 250

I'm pleased to verify the origin of this pistol, but wonder if anyone here has seen another one?

How do you suppose these made their way into the civilian market?

Has anyone ever heard of similar pistols from other State's National Guard units or was this unique to New York?

I'd love to hear any wisdom from any one.

nice 1950 commercial .45. I have one in the 246XXX-C range. one of my birth year guns. I have had one 1911 that originally shipped to a state NG but was in the military serial range from 1913. it now resides back in it's home state. thanks for sharing. I guess it could have been a NG gun or possible a bureau of prison gun. maybe someone here from NY can shed some light on it. lee

Occasionly one will show up here in NY at a gun show, very occasionally.!
Haven't seen one around in quite a while out for public sale,,usually displayed as part of a collection of 1911's marked NotForSale (but sell me yours cheap).

NYS Natl Guard had been buying 1911's from the beginning of their production,,I think the first lot was back in 1913. Not all were marked, some you only discover their history w/a factory letter. Other early ones are marked NY Guard,,not National Guard.
The 1950 contract was a one time thing afaik, but I'm not much of a collector. Unc'a Sam said gimme those pistols son, we need'em for the War in Korea. 'Those pistols' being other 1911A1's in the NYSNG inventory which were probably bought w/Fed assistance anyway,,maybe just lent to the State,,just a guess.
NYS then actually ordered the pistols in this contract right from Colt.
I was told NYS surplused these as a lot in the mid 60's,,(great timing).
If that was done now,,they by NY law would have to be destroyed, as NYS law does not allow any service firearms from State or local enforcement agencys* to be surplus sold to the public.,,and the gov't sure wouldn't want 'em for credit on new SIGs or even the Berettas..

Nice find for sure.
