Idiot Scratch
Talk about idiot scratch! These are the magazine floorplates of Mauser C 96s. Removing them is the first step in field stripping the pistol. The spring holding the plunger is stiff and requires some sort of tool to depress. The flooorplate is fitted tightly and most of the time requires a tap with a hammer on the tool holding down the plunger. Usually people use a screwdriver or pin punch, probably the worst things to use. At the tap the tool slips out of the hole and the result is a scratch through that nice Mauser blueing. The ideal tool to save the pistol's finish is made from the handle of an old toothbrish. Ten minutes work with a Dremel, an I've never scratched a floorplate since.

Nice tip, I don't have a Mauser, but I've made a fair number of tools, and I like the idea of the tooth brush handle.

I never throw away a used toothbrush. It goes to the shop and into a drawer waiting its turn to be made into some sort of non-marring tool. ...
