Impulse Purchase -- Remington 17 from 1931
I was in Indiana and had five hours before my flight home
Googled gun shops in the area and Premier Arms came up
Very nice outfit and worth the half hour detour
They had this Remington 17 in excellent condition for under $400
Took their card and arranged for shipment to local FFL
Barrel code is May 1931
20 gauge 28" full choked barrel

Lot of magazine tube showing in front of the forearm. I realize that the forearm is short, but is the action maybe partially open, too?
I've never seen a M-17 in person, just a few photos. I know that Ithaca waited until the patent expired and brought out the same basic gun as their famed M-37, with a few improvements.
Is the short riot gun barrel original to this example with checkered stock and forearm?
I've always liked that the magazine release is right by the shooter's trigger finger.
Nice looking gun.

The 17 is NOT a short barreled riot gun
We do NOT have short barreled shotguns in New Jersey
Here is the 20 gauge 17 showing its 28" barrel
and its cousin
a 12 gauge Remington 31 riot from 1934 with a 20" barrel

Really nice Model 17. I think they are about the nicest handling 20ga pump gun. Nice find!
I had a somewhat finish worn but mech good, solid rib 17 that I sadly traded for something I can't recall now.
FWIW, Remington did make the M17 in a Riot version and the Police Model (17P).
The Police Model had a 14" bbl w/pistol grip stock. That was the so called Whippet, the moniker having been attached to several short bbled, pistol gripped shotguns since.
The 17P could be ordered with a Bridgeport Holster attachment stud taking the place of the left side carrier pivot screw.
My late production 17 had that on it probably as a parts cleanup assembly. Wouldn't have been too handy w/the 28" bbl it had under a windbreaker.

Those things feel like magic wands! Amazing ergonomics in that Browning design.

I had not realized that you live in New Jersey. I'll offer prayers for your deliverance...
Seriously, nice gun. Thanks for the photos and for explaining it was a cut -off photo that initially made the bbl. look short.
As for the M-31, the late shotgun authority Don Zutz told me that he preferred it to the Winchester M-12 and felt that the M-31 was probably the best slide-action shotgun ever made. He got one as a lad and kept it.
Although better known for his book, The Double Shotgun, Don did have an M-1100. He liked it, but took an extra action bar when hunting. He'd seen some of those break on that model.

Wow really nice! Quality really oozes off this model. I'd say it looks much better than the 870 Express and many other stamped out guns of today.
