Marlin original golden 39a questions???????
I have a chance to buy 1993 39a in box with all papers and assc. The Gun only fired a few times in excellent condition. I would like to have a 22lr lever so I am very interested. My question:
What is a good price for this?
Are they a well built Gun.
Any other info would be greatly appreciated, I am a revolver person so I am trying to learn about riffles and shotguns. Thank you

I can't speculate on the price, except that I paid $350 for a beautiful, possibly unfired, 39a in 2011. It was manufactured in 1967. No box. Looking back, I consider that a screaming bargain. Prices have gone up considerably.
The rifle is great quality. They don't call it the Cadillac of 22's for nothing. Mine is capable of one inch groups at 50 yds from a rest and likes a variety of ammo, particularly 40 grain solids at standard velocity. I don't use match grade stuff because of the expense. CCI and Winchester. Each ammo shoots to slightly different POI and requires a minor adjustment. The function is flawless and it feels substantial in the hand. I consider this treasure an heirloom. There are lots of fans on this forum who will come forward. The Marlin vs. Winchester thing I think is like Ford vs. Chevy. A little different, but both get the job done. I'm a Marlin/Ford guy.

I have a much older Marlin 39A, that predates the "Golden" designation. I would say they are excellent guns. I'm not sure when they started adding that stupid cross bolt safety. If it doesn't have that feature and is in good condition, I would venture it might be worth $6-700. If it does have the safety, I would not buy it at any price. Check completed auctions on GB and see what you can get in the way of comps.

I have a later 39A with the micro groove rifling that I traded for about 40 years ago. It is a very well made, high quality arm. Though the prices have gone a bit higher recently, I believe that it is a rifle any .22 lover would desire.

Top quality .22 rifle. Mine is older than the one you are considering and it is a solid, accurate and good looking rifle.

I have three 39A's, all excellent firearms. Of all the 22's I have owned and fired, the 39A's are my favorite. Can't speculate on a price, but if your gut feeling is that it is a fair deal. then buy it. You won't regret it.

I've had a 39A (pre-golden) since '58. VERY well made and accurate. I was disappointed in the quality of newer ones, but that was 30 years ago. I DO hear poor remarks about the newer Marlins in general. Hope that one is a good one.

I doesn't matter what price you have to pay now. In a year or so, it will be worth much more. Keep the box and every thing that comes with it. Shoot the heck out of it and take care of it. Your grandchildren will someday remark that "Grandpa sure knew quality 22 LR rifles". .... :-)

I have never heard anyone say anything bad about the original Marlin 39. I have the Centennial Model, now almost 50 years old. It is a tack driver and not for sale in my lifetime.

I have one with the same birth year as me, 1973. It is as fine a quality rifle as I own. You will not be disappointed.

Marlin 39a's pricewise are all over the place! Depends on the year and configuration....they started adding the crossbolt safeties in 1982. If that is as nice as you say, $500-$650 is about right. Condition is everything, you can buy a fairly rough 39a for around $350 these days. Your location will also dictate price, for example here in SC if I paid $550 for a gorgeous specimen 39a I could go across the border to NC and get $650+ for it! You will never lose money on that rifle, but you may never want to part with it! Yes, they are that good! I had a 1960 39a, but traded it for a 39D...which is lighter and carbine length (easier for my wife to hold). Get it, enjoy it!

I bought a very nice one recently for just under $300 out the door, but thought I stole it. Paid $500 for a nice Mountie (short version of the 39A) about the same time. I hope you don't mean it will stay in the safe, as the beauty of the Marlin 39s is in the shooting.

I have five of the model 39's, two Mounties and three Golden 39's. My oldest is 1959 vintage and my most recent was manufactured in 2010. The 39 was a gun that I dreamed about and wore the Marlin catalog out when I was a kid in the 60's. Once I got a real paying job one of the first things that I bought was a model 39. Over the years I have probably owned a dozen or so. Some of the more recent manufacture prior to being bought out by Remington have had issues with fail to feed or fail to fire but for the most part, they have all been excellent, extremely accurate rifles.
Some of my more memorable times afield have been with an iron sighted Marlin on an early fall morning sitting beneath some hickory trees waiting to ambush a squirrel.
In my area, decent 39's are going for $650-700. I passed on a new in the box version of the Texan for $900 recently. Probably should have bought it as I never see them for sale.

Great gun! I have a D ser.# dating it to 1947; it was my dad's; must've got it when he he got home from "The Islands" back in WWII. He may have bought it used, don't know, but it still shoots like it was new, very accurate. I popped a couple groundhog heads in farmers' fields when I was a kid. It's gonna be my daughter's. Peace! I've got four myself and wish I could afford a few more. They are the best of all the 22 levers.
