Walther P-38 with sweat heart grips
When I got this gun it had the "sweat heart grips", clear plexiglass made by the GI who took it home. They would display pictures of wives, girlfriends or what ever in them. It didn't have any pictures in it when I got it, so I put a picture of my wife and one of my girlfriend in it.

Good thinking, keeping them on opposite sides like that .
I saw a WWII USGI 1911 that had hand made clear grips like that. Supposedly the grips came from a downed US plane windshield and made by a German soldier who had taken the pistol off a dead GI.

From the looks of your sweethearts, you don't have time to shoot. Send me the gun and I'll tell you how it does.
If you prefer the gun, send me your sweethearts....uh... on second thought, just one will be enough. ;>)
Thanks for the post; I've never heard of that grip practice before.

Why do you have the safety on with the trigger back? I always wonder about this when I see people do it to Walthers.
Doesn't seem as if does the springs any good.
The grips and the photos do have a "period" look.
Unless proof can be shown, I doubt that Germans used grips like this on captured US guns. I think it's culturally a thing used by some less sophisticated US soldiers.
In the Pacific, especiaally, knife handles like that appeared. The Plexiglass might come from either Alied or Japanese canopies.
I have a theory that this was more common among Marines and sailors as they had shops aboard ships that could do the work. Of course, Army units en route to invade islands could get the shops to work on their knives, too.

Guns with sweetheart grips (usually .45 Automatics) were a common sight at gun shows back in the day. They are not often encountered today. I agree that it's doubtful that the German or Japanese troops ever made them. I don't know about the British. Probably not.

The vet who brought this pistol back made the grips while over seas and the family says he made the same grips for other American soldiers. When he came home, he became a shop teacher at Cass tech in Detroit.
I've never heard of the German's making these types of grips. I think it was unique to the American GI's. The story goes that the plexiglass was from downed enemy aircraft.
