Default Texas Official State Gun

There is a story in today's newspaper that a resolution is coming up before the Texas state legislature to designate an official state gun - the Colt Walker revolver. While that's not too surprising given the connection between Texas and the Colt Walker, what was is that Texas is not the first state to designate a state gun. Eight other states already have.

UT, AK, WV, IN, AZ, PA, TN, and KY. But the story did not say what the other official guns were.

I may just have to get a repro if that passes. I have a 1860 Army Pietta clone already.

John M. Browning was a Utah boy so naturally our state gun is the Colt 1911.

We don't have one yet, but our choices of in-house made firearms are Hi-Point and Ithaca.

I'm sure it will be a hotly contested, long deliberation.

Pa., The Pennsylvania Longrifle of course. I am a direct descendent of Andrew Kline, a York/Adams county gunsmith of the early 1800s.

AZ named the Colt SAA as the State gun. I think in 2011.

The designer was an easy choice but there was along list to pick from. I'd bet that both the Auto-5 and Model 1894 Winchester have been used more by civilians. I might have picked the 1895 Winchester.

I will not hold my breath waiting for Washington to pick a state gun. If they ever did it most likely would be an ingot of steel left from melting down police buy backs.

As we approach flood season, Ithaca has partnered with the Metropolitan Sewer District to present this offering.

Had to look up Indiana,
It's the Grouseland Rifle.
It's in the Grouseland house in Vincennes.
That's then Gov later Prez William Henry Harrison's house.
My wife is from there, I have toured Grouseland.
Embarrassed to say I don't remember that gun!

My home state! Good choice AZ.
I am surprised the state I have lived in my entire adult life doesn't have one. What is taking so long Idaho?

Alaska's state gun is a pre 64 model 70 Winchester. Original caliber was to be 30-06, the most popular caliber and a mainstay, but a bunch of whiners complained enough that their favorite caliber was not chosen, so all calibers were accepted. A second gun was proposed but never acted on. That gun was a Colt Woodsman, another very popular gun up there.

That rang a bell with me. There was a great article about the Grouseland in the November, 2016 issue of American Rifleman.

The original rifle was built by John Small, a Revolutionary War gunsmith.

Quoting briefly from the American Rifleman article:

"While John Small possessed an arsenal of talents, his work as a gunsmith was particularly valued on the western frontier. Of the five John Small rifles known to still exist, most are associated with significant historical figures of the period. Explorer William Clark owned a signed John Small rifle, which now resides in the archives of the Missouri History Museum. The Indiana State Museum holds two John Small rifles, a tomahawk, pistol and powder horn: his “Vigo Rifle” was owned by Col. Francis Vigo, an Italian trader who aided in George Rogers Clark’s capture of Fort Sackville in 1779. The “Girty Rifle” is believed to have been owned by either Simon or James Girty, brothers infamous for their anti-Colonial allegiances. The “Menard Pistol” was crafted for Pierre Menard, notable as the first lieutenant governor of Illinois."

"The original “Grouseland Rifle” (shown here below its modern counterpart) is the official rifle of the state of Indiana. Its maker, Col. John Small (r.) was regarded as one of the finest gunsmiths west of the Appalachians and had been a soldier during the Revolutionary War. He eventually settled in the Northwest Territory in Vincennes, Ind."

When I lived in Texas it seemed like the State gun was a Browning BLR .243 Lever Action, saw lots of 'em during deer season. The deer are not large and a .243 is all you need, and most of the guys using them were pretty good shots too. I remember standing next to a friend who blasted a Turkey that was running at full speed over 170 yards away.

That is just so fun and amusing. I imagine that if the Colt SAA and the 1911 were not already state guns somewhere else they would have been very much in the running.

Interestingly, the Republic of Texas bought a great many guns from Colt. The blackpowder Paterson .36 preceded the Walker with the Texas Rangers. It would have served well as Texas's State Gun but if you had to vote for a gun named after a town in New Jersey or a Texas Ranger, well, that would not be a hard choice here!!!

Especially since it was Captain Samuel Walker who made the suggestions for improving the Paterson that Colt used to make the huge Walker Colt.

Very cool choice.
