Thanks for sharing!! I too love the classic lines of the Detective Special. I have a couple, one like yours, and a later shrouded ejector rod version. Yours is the one that always brings to mind the film noir, the detective and gangster movies, and has an aura all its own!!

Yours looks to be in much better condition than mine....Here's mine, a 1969 vintage, with a period Tyler T Grip. I sometimes carry it in the same pocket holster that I usually carry my 340PD in:

Lovely gun. I own three one early, one mid and one relatively late. The late one was my regular carry gun for several years.

I've got two classic ones, 1961 and 1970, the first with the old long grip frame, the second with the shorter one. I may add a Cobra at some point to make it a trio .

Somewhat strangely, despite the fact that I generally prefer S&W to Colt revolvers as use weapons partly for the sturdier ejector rod and underbarrel lug, on the DS the opposite applies; I only like the old style and don't care much for the later variant with shrouded rod.

I looked up the serial number and mine was made in 1967.

Verah nice. I had two but sold the '67 second series to a friend. I kept my 1941 1st series though. It is a nice shooter.

Colt's Agent. Little bit shorter grip frame. Parkerized finish.
Made of an aluminum alloy getting weight down to about 17 oz.
I bobbed the hammer spur for concealed carry.

My only Colt is a Cobra purchased new in 1968 as an off-duty piece. I don't carry it much anymore mostly b/c it's hard to find anyone to work on them and I don't want anything to happen to it.

I have two Cobras and one of the shrouded DS's. I've tried to "love" carrying the Cobra, but it just doesn't work as well for me as a hammerless J-frame. I'm willing to give up the extra round.

I do "love" owning them, though!

Don't like the unprotected ejector rod - I worked with a guy who hit some one up-side the head with his and then tried to shoot him and lucky 4 the bad guy it wouldn't fire because the rod was bent.

Bought this one last year on another gun forum. Like new.

I still have my Dad's......................from the 50s; it was his off duty gun; and his duty gun when he was a Captain late 60s and 70s.

I've owned a couple of the newer ones but ...... if I grabbed a short barreled revolver it was a 2 1/2" 19/66 or later a 3" 66. So they were eventually used as trade fodder for Smiths.

I shot J-frames for a long time before purchasing my first Colt snub-nose, old style with exposed ejector rod. The Colts are a little bigger and a little heavier. Whether or not these features make them a bit easier to shoot well in comparison with the small S&Ws, I don't know. Like the S&Ws, however, the Colts are still sensitive to grip firmness as it applies to bullet point of impact and group size.

Advantages or disadvantages of the exposed ejector rod and added round capacity of the Colt are debatable at best; just depends on individual tastes.

I have never been concerned about the Colt's exposed extractor rod, as I believe the probability of my ever needing to hit someone in the head with a revolver, especially a Colt DS, is exceedingly remote. One feature most may not be aware of is that the early (pre-WWII) DSs have a shorter extractor rod stroke than the post-WWII DSs. Which means the postwar DS has more positive extraction. It also has a ramped front sight. The pre-war version has the "Half-moon" front sight. The bottom picture in Posting #12 shows that.

I was issued a 4" Colt .38 as a rookie and while walking my beat, solo (no partner and no radio) tried to arrest a drunk. I was losing the battle when I pulled the Colt and hit him w/it, bending the extractor rod. Thank goodness the guy went down b/c he'd taken my stick away from me and the gun now would not shoot. Like the old Colts but this was a design flaw.

Those Colts tend to grow on you! Bought my first pistol in 1972, and many more since then.(no Colts) Then 3 years ago I saw a very nice 2".38 DS for sale at a decent price and I bought it. Then a year ago I saw a nice 2" .38 Cobra with hammer shroud and box and bought that one. Almost bought a Python down at the LGS recently. My will power is fading fast, O woe is me!

Well, if the exposed ejector rod is seen as a potential liability, the later series with the shroud may provide an answer. Here is my Colt Agent, with the shrouded ejector rod, and wearing a period Tyler T Grip. This one is well worn, and has been carried quite a bit:



Although a later version, this one has the same gloss finish as the Cobra, and not the parkerized finish of the later versions. Note that although it has the shroud, it retains the smaller grips of the original Agent. With its light weight and six rounds, it makes a pretty appealing concealed carry gun.

While I have owned many they do shoot loose faster than Sw's and don't hold up as well. There nice looking and shooting ,but not as good for durability or easy to work on.

Carried this Colt for around twenty years as either a back-up revolver to my S&W model 10 HB or as my "off duty." Replaced the pencil barrel with the "newer" heavier version. The barrel is blued while the rest of the gun has what remains of a Teflon finish (popular back in the day).

I also rounded off all the sharp edges of the hammer spur. Saved on clothing and skin.

I'm a S&W fan myself, but my favorite carry snubnose is the classic Colt DS (1st and 2nd gen).

I don't lust over Pythons or any other Colt revolver, but the DS is in a class of its own.

I don't shoot them, I just enjoy looking at them.

Whether you believe or don't believe the stories about how Colts are so delicate and get out of time so easily (from my experience of many years, they aren't and don't), it really makes no difference for the Colt snubbies. They are not target guns and no one takes them out every weekend to fire a thousand rounds. They are personal defense weapons, and most of them have never experienced much more actual shooting use than maybe firing one box of ammunition a year. I don't use a revolver for concealed carry, but if I did, it would be my Detective Special, without hesitation.
