Default New .41 magnum

My LGS ordered a Ruger Redhawk in .41 magnum. 4.2 inch tapered barrel, hogue grips. I'm liking this a lot.

Fit and finish is good. Barrel is straight, very smooth trigger. The only downside is the cylinder wiggles some with the trigger held to the rear. I've seen other new Rugers and S&W's do this, so I'm going to tolerate this.

I 'slugged' the chambers; with the Remington 210 gr. Rounds they go in easily. Speer Gold dots are quite a tight fit. Hopefully won't be a problem down the road. Any thoughts on this?

Overall I really like this super strong 41

Beauty if you happen to like Ruger revolvers. Unfortunately, I don't.

I LOVE them! Good luck.

Dave

I like my Ruger Redhawk. Mine's .44 Magnum, same 4.2" barrel.

I did change out the grips, as I found the original rubber grips too big for my taste, couldn't get a proper two hand hold. Ruger Customer Service hooked me up with a wooden set:

I've since changed out those wooden grips for an older walnut set, now I'm happy.

I think a Redhwak will outlast two lives...

It will make you a great revolver, big fan of the 41. Only own one Ruger DA, a GP 100 44spl, but have a bunch of their SA's. Looking real hard at a Ruger Redhawk in 45LC / acp. Rugers are rugged, built like a tank and will handle a lot of high intensity rounds. Enjoy your new 41 mag.

Why would Speer factory ammo be a tight fit? And why would the hand and bolt not hold the cylinder tightly with the trigger held back in the "fire" position? Don't know about this one. At times, I think we cut Ruger revolvers too much slack with this "built like a tank" description. The SP101 DA pull, for example.

Up to you...

I have a .41 Redhawk with 5 1/2" barrel. Very accurate. Only been shooting it with "Cowboy" loads. Makes a decent range gun that I don't mind using. I don't mind throwing this one a range bag and shooting it all day. Fun on silhouettes. Mine still has it's factory wood grips and they actually fit my hand pretty well.

Nicer if you reload. Starline is now making 41 special head stamped brass for those days you just want some trigger time and don't need to shoot bears.

My Redhawk surely has it's place. Corvettes are nice but I actually drive a pickup truck more.

i sometimes use Trailboss powder for my 41, lots of fun to shoot, accurate, but fairly tame..

I have a 3-screw Ruger Blackhawk in 41, i won't give it up, great gun.

Default My thoughts

You bought the right gun in the wrong caliber.

A heavy 357 mag equals a light 41 mag (180 grain), and a light 44 mag (215 grain) equals a heavy 41 mag. There is a 200 grain 357 bullet and 200, 220, 240, 260 grain 44 bullets.

I have NEVER bought a box of 44 mag ammo because over the years, I acquired 1,700+ pieces of range brass. The same is true for 357 mag brass. In all these years of brass picking and scrounging, I think I found about 6 pieces of 41 mag brass. The last time I saw 41 magnum ammo on the shelf for 50 rounds of jacketed bullets, the price was $75 for each box, no limit, and 3 boxes were on the shelf.

Bullets, brass, and firearms are all scarce (there certainly is no great selection to chose from) in 41 magnum, but the owners are really enthusiastic about it virtues. I understand, its Dillon vs. Hornady.

Update. I fired about 30 rounds in the Redhawk today. Accuracy was good. Remington 210 gr. JSP, Speer Gold Dots, and Underwood 210 gr. JHP. All very hot and loud.

Revolver was flawless, sights needed no adjustment. I was concerned about the somewhat loose cylinder lockup, but there was no spitting or shaving going on. I'm going to leave it as is, since it works.

It's been a while since I owned and carried a 41 mag, and I'm very glad to be back on the horse again.

I have had a Ruger Redhawk and an S&W model 57 for many years. I load a little less than full power, and use them to bust water-filled paper milk cartons, usually at 50 yards. The .41 is impressive when it hits. I don't hit as often as I used to, but still manage one every 5 or 6 shots. I'm only an average marksman, so I take plenty of ammo. I have found that I get good 50-yd groups with lead bullets. I like the Hornady XTP bullets, but they are too expensive for my purpose. When I was searching for a decent load, I used a Ransom Rest, which was a real asset.

I like the model 57, also. However, my main complaint is the grooved trigger. After 50 rounds, I get a welt on my trigger finger. Why does S&W persist in putting this type of trigger on its more powerful handguns? I know they make a smooth trigger, but it should be standard. For this reason I shoot the Ruger more often, plus its heavier weight dampens recoil. Anyone else have the Smith trigger problem?

Regards,
QW

I own RedHawks in 44mag ever since they were offered. I just picked up a 41 mag and 357mag with 5 1/2" barrels. I been eyeing the 4.2" barrels. The 41mag/4.2 barrel is a nice ccw revolver.

I shot federal 410gr JHP out of my s&w m58 she barks for sure the whole range woke up and all eyes were on me. Funny they watched me put it in my waist ban holster. Those 380's make little noise.

After a nasty divorce from a S&W due to a Model 57, my dear, old dad picked up a Redhawk in 41mag. He was a big fan of Elmer Keith, who advocated the 41mag as the standard police round. Dad's long gone, but the Redhawk resides in my safe. I'm normally a S&W man, but this Ruger's a fine shooter and it's staying in the inventory.

...you bought the right gun and the right caliber... 180 .357s dodn't even come close to .41s... And .44s are more than what one needs and kicks more...

Had a .41/5.5" for several years but sold it a long time ago. Two years ago when Ruger made the run of 4.2" guns I bought one out of the secnd batch shipped...absolutely superb DA...

First shots fired...about 30 yards DA...

Best 50 yard DA group I have ever sshot...

Was so happy with it I bought the 2.5" when it came out...

It's a shooter too but a little more concentration is needed...

QuietWyatt , I have the same problem so I grind / file them down smooth . The other option is to put a band aid on your finger before shooting . I've never used a shooting glove and never will .

I love the .41 mag as well. I have a very old 6" 57 and a 58 that I still carry now and then. The 57 has taken several white tail over the years.

I enjoy the 41 and have several . I have to say that a 180gr cast in a 357 can be a great powerful load . I prefer to shoot them from a 6" barrel to get all the velocity I can . The barrel twist rate on Smiths is a little slow for heavier bullets so I want all the velocity on the bullet I can get before it leaves the barrel . It packs a powerful punch , on both ends .

I love the 41. That was a great purchase. Congrats! Both the Redhawk and m57 are on my wish list.

Rugers D/A revolvers have a lot going for them. They're well made, durable and reliable. They are also among the ugliest guns in existence. LOL.

...one thing about Ruger...at least they are making a variety of guns in .41... Redhawk in 2.5 and 4.2", Super Redhawk in 7.5", Blackhawk in 4 5/8 and 6.5" and a Super Blackhawk Hunter 7.5"...

...and S&W...one blue 6" Classic with the IL Didn't even make a 50th Anniversary edition like they did for the 27 and 29....

Ruger is also making .327s...where is Smith....

Would love to buy some more Smiths but my last four revolver purchases have been Rugers...

I don't get where you guys are coming from when you call Rugers ugly. they're friggin revolvers fer Christ's sake. They all have the same basic shape/form in their own respective genre' (DA/SA) and the finish, in my opinion is not much different between the makers (with a nod to S&W in earlier models). But the Rugers are, for the most part, more robust. Able to handle more thrust and there is not much difference, especially in the later arms,in the fit and finish. I have as many Ruger pistols as Smiths and the difference in accuracy is nil. You got a preference, say it is a preference and quit dumpin on Rugers!
Now, back to our regularly scheduled program!
