Default Get a "Glock 39"

My neighbor has a Glock 39 (subcompact .45GAP) and he would like for me to take it off his hands! (For a considerably high price!)
He is aware of the fact that I am about to purchase a Shield 45 and thinks the Glock is better chose for me. (His logic). I can get the Shield for a very good price at my LGS along with the $75. rebate. He is willing to take $375. for the Glock. He claims the Glock is a better gun and a better value. I, however don't think so!
Anyone familiar with the Glock.45GAP? What are your thoughts?

Yes it's Glocks way of making a 45acp fit a 9mm frame.

It's really quite pointless unless you love the gun and the round. Not many places use them and ammo is expensive. The guns themselves aren't bad but I wouldn't be paying $25 a box of FMJ

Oddly enough used ones never sit long at my LGS. Someone's buying them

Stay with the 45 ACP - much cheaper and easier to buy.

Yeah, even if you think a Glock is the best handgun in the world you really don't want to mess with .45 GAP, which is simply never going to be as easy to find as .45 ACP. Kind of pointless to my lights but YMMV I reckon!

IMO, a glock is a glock. Take that however you want. I like them while some don't.
As for the .45GAP, other than having your name (glock) associated with the round and/or having .45ACP ballistics in a 9mm length magazine, I don't see the need. Just my opinion.
ETA:
Ammo availability may also be a problem.

Buy the Glock 39 if you are going to carry it for protection. You will love it in no time. If you are buying for both CCW and range time...I'd still buy the Glock..

If it were a 36 (45 ACP) and you like Glocks I would say consider it strongly at that price. The 39???? nah.....I would pass in favor of the shield.

The 45 GAP is pretty much a dead or dying cartridge.

Get a 45 ACP and be done with it (not necessarily a Glock either!)

I'll agree if we are talking about a Glock 30!

The Gawd Awful Pistol versions are to be avoided. Most police depts. that went to them have already switched.

Gaston wanted something with his name on it. Notice how the 45 ACP, 357 SIG & 40 S&W are marked on Glocks - 45 AUTO, 357 AUTO & 40 AUTO.

To the OP - skip the GAP - get whatever pistol makes you happy in a more readily available round.

For the record, I carry a G30 or a G43 daily. (sometimes both )

The only .45 Glocks worth having are the Glock 21 (fullsize 13 rd mag) and the Glock 30 (compact 10 rd mag). Both are chambered for the .45 ACP, which has the overiding and sterling virtue of being AVAILABLE.

Actually it was an answer to departments wanting the G21 but with the grip of a G17.

I visit half a dozen local gun shops every week. I only know of ONE that carries .45 GAP, and in FMJ (range ammo spec) costs as much as serious duty JHP. They have it only randomly (I notice because they put a special sign on it to warn off confusion).

If you like the round that much, I can pass along the shop info.

I would think that the Shield is going to have an easier resale??

The police depts. didn't do the name game - That was all Gaston.

I understand them wanting a smaller grip, but with the new HP rounds available today, all of the popular calibers are all on even footing.

There is no magic bullet. No matter what, you need accuracy with a bullet that does what it is designed to do - the best 9mm-45ACP ammo all do that.

The trend now is to go away from the 40 S&W back to the 9mm since the 9mm is easier to shoot for most folks. Add to that the capacity of the 9mm, and it's easy to see why police depts. are doing what they are doing.

The GAP ammo was a interesting concept - but better ammo for the main stream calibers came along and made it irrelevant.

If I could find a G39 in good condition for $375, I'd get it. I'd get it with the understanding that I'd have to handload for it. Starline charges $3 more for GAP brass in 500 count. Needless to say the other component prices are the same. It's a unique pistol in an unusual caliber - and that's why I have Ruger P89 and a Walther P5 in .30 Luger/9mil. Any schmuck can go out and buy a Shield ...

40, 45 acp, 45 gap are a little much for me as a carry gun. I'll stick the the 9 mm.

Have a Glock 37. Deadly accurate, easy to shoot, same size as a G19 or G17 (9MM). Really just never caught on. Mine is a GA State Patrol turn in. If you hand load ammo, no difference in component cost and 45 GAP can be loaded to approach 45 ACP without difficulty.

If it were a Glock 36 (.45 ACP) I'd say go for it. If the choice is between a Shield .45 ACP and a .45 GAP anything, take the Shield. You won't pay much more for the Shield than he's asking for that 39.

The .45 GAP is just about the only thing that Glock has ever failed at.

.45 GAP,.....no thanks. I've seen ammo on the shelves twice since the cartridge and gun were introduced, but .45 ACP is always on the shelves. Around here, .45 GAP is rare, indeed.........

My daily carry is a Glock 36 in .45 GAP but I hand-load and have a boatload of brass for "that day". I think the 39 would be a handfull with full loads. Even if you handload, I think I'd pass.

I like the GAP myself (have 2 G37s and 4K once-fired cases) but I am a little strange. While I would love to have a G39, I would only do so if it was a great deal (i.e. $300 or less). For the money, you can't beat the Shield deals.

SCHP still using the GAP as far as I know. Oddly enough I've never handled or shot one. I do on occasion carry a Hybrid Glock, 36 upper on a 30SF lower. After giving it a little thought, I don't think I would buy one at that price.

John, how could you have forgotten the Glock 41. While not an ideal choice for carry I'll bet with a well designed holster that long slide 45 ACP could be concealed well and while I don't understand why I find the long slide Glocks to be the only models that interest me.

I assume, sir, that you have an aftermarket barrel on your G36 or are the GAP and ACP barrels kinda-sorta interchangeable between models? I'm starting to really think about putting a GAP on my (very short ... ) 2017 list ...

Now that ammo is available as it used to be, ( use Walmat as an example) do you see .45 GAP in the lineup? To my way of thinking, if the ammo I want is not available at the most basic of stores, IE Walmart, K mart Big-5 etc. then I do not want it in my arsenal.

When ammo was super hard to find, I remember GAP type ammo to be available, I guess that is because it has a very narrow following.

I have excluded the 36 and the 41 from my "guns of interest" list.

The 36 holds only about the same amount of ammo as most revolvers, and the 41 would be strictly for competition - way too bulky for CC, and I don't shoot competition any more.

The 21 makes a great duty gun for police, or a house gun for home protection. Good for open carry in the field, too.

The 30 is minimum bulk for 11 rounds of .45 ACP firepower, fairly concealable, and by the way, stunningly accurate. Mas Ayoob has written a lot about that.

A concealed carry 30 with a spare 21 magazine (which will fit and function) makes a nearly ideal CC package. I find that it will fit nicely into a compact camera pouch worn on the belt, and no one is wiser.

"I don't understand why I find the long slide Glocks to be the only models that interest me."

- Coincidentally, I don't understand that either.-

Just my $.02 worth.

OP Here!
Thanks to all who responded. I think I will not "Get a Glock 39". I will instead go with a Shield (.45ACP). My entire family of handguns are made up of S&W. I am going to keep it that way!

My thoughts, sure!

I would first ask him if it's such a "better gun" and a "better value", why is HE getting rid of it?

Then I would offer him $250 and if he said no, I'd walk away.

Those are my thoughts!

I've had a model 37 Glock for three years now and I find it much easier to handle and shoot than the 4506 I sold to get it(used). Ammo is not a problem as my LGS stocks it and I also reload for it and 45ACP. It fits in my hand better than the 4506, is a lot lighter to carry and is more accurate for me.
Since it's not a round that everyone knows about it's been shot by about 25 individuals other than me at the range, and I encourage those shooters to run the mag to empty. I've never had anyone give it up before emptying the mag and most all remark on how nice it shoots.
Now I have fairly big hands and stand 6' tall and go over 230# and I never worried about the BS that it was a round not needed, it was Gaston's attempt for perpetuity, it was fools play, yada, yada, yada. It's a dam fine shooter and if I do my part 3 magazines in a 6" circle at 10 yards is all I can ask for. Try one, you may like it. BTW, I still have a Sig 250 in 45 ACP and it shoots as good as the Glock.
