Default Pistol preference survey

This has likely been done but let's do it again, anyway.

My point - for whatever reason, S&W discontinued the 3rd generation pistols to sell the then new M&P pistols. To my mind it was a sort of hop on the bandwagon, everyone else is selling striker fired guns with tricky triggers, we should, too.

However, in reality, NOT everyone is selling striker fired pistols. Beretta still makes several typical double action pistols, with decockers, as does SIG, never mind the huge number of single action pistols still being sold.

So, I thought about it - let's take a survey, see what most of us prefer in our automatic pistols. Revolvers are not included. If I mis-describe something or miss some type of other action I apologize.

BAM-BAM I am right there with you. I have no objection if this survey devolves into a fun debate as well, with folks arguing the pros and cons of their choices.

I have two Hi-Power type guns, one a Browning and one an Israeli Kareem. They might be great guns but at no point in time am I going to carry a single action pistol. I won't say I never did because that's not true but the more I am around them the less I like them, especially for concealed carry.

All metal.
Decocker
Traditional double action

I agree. And the brands you named all work for me, too.

It depends on the purpose.

For range fun: my 3rd gens.

For pocket and nightstand: strikers.

While I do have a couple SA pistols, almost all my pistols are striker fire (a couple Glocks, a couple from the XD line, my Shield, etc).
Just my personal preference.

LOL...... there were a lot of small striker fired pistols in the early 20th Century......replaced by DA/SA guns after the Walter PP and P-38 were introduced in the 30s...... only to reappear with the Glock in the early 80s.

I like TDA for carry, although I don't carry autos as much anymore.

I like 1911s and Hi-Powers if it's a "range only" or "target fun" day. I shoot them better than a DA pistol.

I've considered going back to Brownings and 1991s for carry, but I don't carry an auto enough to put the work in. Not that it would be a big task, but why take the chance? Everything I carry right now is "point and (a long) pull."

I'm good with all types of actions. Just need to practice to be proficient with the various designs. I've carried single action 1911s, DA/SA guns, and striker fired, as well. I think there are merits to each.

For a carry gun, it boils down to how well the actual gun meets my needs in terms of reliability, size/capacity, and of course, how well it shoots. In a lot of ways, I think that DA/SA is a good choice for carry, but I realize some people have a hard time getting past the heavier DA first pull... Also something to be said about a gun having a hammer. I do like the simplicity of Glocks, and carry a couple of them.

Except for the 1911s, I prefer not to have a safety on when carrying my guns. This works fine with striker fired, DA/SA, DAO guns and a good holster... Reducing any guesswork is important in stressful situations.
That said, I've been shooting 1911s so long, I'm fine carrying cocked with the safety engaged.

For the range, I just have to like the gun, and I'll figure out how to shoot it best... I have a variety of all of the types listed, and enjoy shooting them all.

Default I started out with....

I started out with DAOs for simpicity and safety. I've moved on to favor SA/DA with a combination safety/deckocker. After shooting a lot of DAO, I've gotten to where I really like hammer pistols. Anything I intend to carry though, is striker fired, like the Shield.

The first gun I ever bought was a DA/SA gun, a Beretta 92FS (which is currently serving HD duty). It's also what I have the most trigger time on, including revolvers. It's what I've used in most of the training classes I attended.

Second to that, in terms of shooting experience, would be SA, specifically 1911s. DA revolvers come third, with Glock in fourth. My best shooting has been with DA revolvers, closely followed by DA/SA semi-autos, with 1911s in 3rd. Glock would come in after that (I had a Glock 23). I'm pretty much convinced the "rolling" DA trigger is why I tend to shoot those guns best.

What's interesting about this thread is that I've recently been thinking about how I would rank the different semi-auto action types that I'd be interested in as carry guns. This is what I came up with, from highest preference to lowest preference:

1. Hammer-fired DAO (I'm including DAK in this category)
2. Hammer-fired DA/SA, decocker-only
3. Glock 19
4. Hammer-fired DA/SA, with safety (thinking mostly 92FS)
5. Hammer-fired SA (i.e., 1911)
6. All other striker-fired guns (they all seem to be mostly SA-ish with no safeties)

I'm not saying that I would purchase a DA/SA gun before I'd purchase a Glock, but DA/SA would be a higher preference. I'd probably have a better chance of getting a Glock 19 than a Sig P239 DAK.

I like Kahr, but I'm actually not sure where I would place it in the list. I believe it's striker-fired, but it has a really nice DAO trigger. I would probably put it somewhere in the top three.

I've never tried a HK LEM, so I didn't mention it. From what I've read about it's operation, it doesn't have much appeal to me. Maybe my opinion would change if I got to try one.

FWIW, the gun at the top of my most-wanted semi-auto carry guns list is the Sig P239 DAK in 9mm, especially the 1st Gen SAS. But like I said, I probably have a better chance at getting a Glock 19.

What I like about that line is the YMMV part - we all have our preferences but rwsmith LIKES shooting hammer guns but prefers carrying striker fired guns. That really is your mileage may vary! Honest answer. I like it.

Keeping revolvers out of this as promised, I'd choose a different route:

1. Hammer fired TDA with decocker. I would choose to NOT use the safety if that is an option. Hammer down, decocked, gun ready to fire (like a revolver). So for my mileage may vary the existence of the safety is irrelevant. Unless you practice combat drills intensely and frequently putting a safety on a TDA pistol can get you killed. I have a Beretta 92 and it never would occur to me to put it on safe. It's not safe. Well, the gun is safe. Too safe. The shooter is the one not safe. Again, YMMV.

2. Hammer-fired DAO. I have never used one but to my mind that's a pistol that wants to pretend to be a revolver. I could live with it. (I would not want a DAK - that's just a lot of additional trigger training and I think you had better be a one gun shooter if you use this style of trigger).

3. Striker fired pistol with anything but a "safe trigger". Glocks will never be in my stable. An M&P is a definite maybe but for my overwhelming preference for all metal 3rd Gens so I am disinclined to but a new M&P accordingly. Plus there are still 3rd Gen type pistols available by other makers, some polymer, some all metal.

4. Single action anything. Been there, done that, no longer interested.

I like the comments. Keep'em coming.

I voted for the DAO. My carry is a Sig P-250sc. It shoots just like a good tuned revolver, and I'm a revolver shooter for 50+ years. These guns work for me, but my second choice would be a TDA. I do like my HK P-30sks. Both of these guns shoot great for me, and I've gotten away from the striker fired ones. I just don't shoot the striker fired guns as well. Remember, I did say I was a revolver shooter for 50+ years...........

This is something I've struggled with, somewhat. As I've said, I have a Beretta 92FS for HD and it's the gun I've had the most training with. When I recently started using the 92FS in the HD role I originally planned to keep it off safe as I prefer that. The only problem is that it's still possible for the gun to go on safe unintentionally, such as when clearing a malfunction or possibly body movement when carried. In the past, I've always followed up a malfunction clearance drill or draw with a thumb swipe to ensure the safety was off. In the end I decided that if I was going to be swiping the safety off, even if it was already off, I may as well keep the safety on and practice accordingly. Also, this is not a carry gun, and I still rely on my 642 as my "quick-reaction" gun, if you will. The 92 is more of a "hunker-down"/"get to it if I can" gun.

I have the recently released 92G conversion kit, so I hope to get that installed before too long so my 92 will become decocker-only and render that concern moot.

Obviously, you can choose what you want. However, this doesn't make sense to me. The DAK is shot just like a revolver. There's no additional trigger training unless you've never fired a DAO gun before.

To me, there is the 1911, the Browning Hi-Power, and the P210... and then there is everything else.

I suppose the P226 might rate an honorable mention, but just barely.

The S&W Model 39 that I was issued in the IL state police academy in 1968, and which I "bought back" when they were replaced by the 439 in 1980, UNTIL I bought a barely-used 1985 S&W 659 at a gun show last fall...it shoots better than I can see (and it has a hammer)...

When it comes to semi-autos, I have always been a 1911 guy. As for revolvers, I have several (+) Smiths and I do believe the one I turn to the most is my 4" model 19.

I love revolvers, but when I carry it's usually my CZ75p01, or the Nano for pocket carry. I prefer the CZ.

S&W automatics have not really caught my fancy. Biggest reason is aesthetics--I do not like the looks of a slide mounted safety/decocker.

Glock 19. Im buying a 19 MOS too in a few weeks and mount a FF3. Exactly as photographed, this set up is under the mattress Im laying on. This was my 12 year old son firing it. He loved it. Im never going to be a marksman, the 19 is plenty accurate for me, a do everything gun at a reasonable price. Nothing wrong with M&P series either.

Let me add my two cents.

When my gut tells me that my travels would best be served by a semi-auto, I turn to one of 3: a 1911 when I have a very heavy feeling in my stomach, my 439 when it feels a little uncomfortable, and my Mauser HSc when I am on an extended "Sunday drive".

Honestly, I don't like the concept of the striker fired pistol. The 1911 (45) has had my 6 in "Indian country", so I trust it, emphatically. There is a time and place for first shot DA, but I want my follow up shots SA, because follow up shots (in my book) need to be deliberate aimed fire.

4. Single action anything. Been there, done that, no longer interested.

I like the comments. Keep'em coming.
I fully understand we're discussing our preferences, but why not?

I've gotten so accustomed to them at work, I actually like Glock....much like a work horse as opposed to a thorough bred.

I have tried the " plastic wonder guns " and the all metal semi auto's , I just don't like them so I don't shoot them . Just give me my S&W 29 4" and I'm good to go . Everytime I go to the range it comes along with me. I had an old pair of PC magna's that I swapped out for the target grips that it had before . I cast /reload and shoot everything from " mild to wild " . My 2nd choice and a close one is my S&W 25-5 4" in 45 Colt . For lack of either of those 2 , give me my 41 mag , 4" or my 357 , 4" . This works for me .

I have 4, 1911's. My favorite pistol. 2 others that I have that are keepers are: Sig P239, 9mm, and IWI Jericho, in .40 S&W. (CZ clone) Both awesome. I have no poly, or double action only guns. Everybody has their own thing! Bob

Reading through the thread...... adding to my earlier post.

ContinentalOp....... I've added the decocker only kit to 2 of my Beretta 92s .... both Centurions........ like the G guns and will probably do a couple more over the next year.

I think Glocks are "good tools"....if I was in a combat/war zone situation...I just might opt for a 19.......... for weight and magazine capacity..... and it's role would be secondary to my rifle. A long time ago I owned a 19 and later took two stabs at 26s.......they worked, shot well..... but didn't like the short light trigger pull in the role of "civilian/ concealed carry"... and didn't spark any pride in ownership....it was just a tool ....like a shovel!!!!

You mean when you have retired to your den, with a libation in your hand, the fireplace providing a warm ambiance, your hunting dog at your side and your Browning Superposed on the wall, you don't find yourself lovingly wiping your favorite Glock down with a silicone rag...?????

That was one of the reasons I had the NY1/"-" connector combo in my Glock 23. The pull weight was about the same as factory stock, but with resistance throughout the trigger pull length, making it more revolver-like. It also made the trigger reset a little stronger. It worked for me. If I were to get a Glock 19, I'd use the same trigger set-up.

Well now that you ask................................

Den w/ big Tudor window overlooking the back garden & fire pit ...... check

libation... selection of single malts on the buffet.......check

fireplace(winter) fire pit (summer/fall).......check

hunting dog...... have to settle for herding dog, a welsh corgi......check

Browning superimposed........sorry just a 1887 Winchester Model 1885 low wall & my first rifle a Steven's Favorite.............check

while lovingly wiping down my first year S&W 3913NL with checkered Hogue wood grips (or my PC Shorty-9).......check

The Glock ???

It's hanging on a hook over the workbench in the garage!!!!!

Tried the NY trigger......truth is; when I had a choice of which gun to grab and go...... it was a Smith, Beretta or Sig. I've been lucky and been able to accumulate some nice "stuff" (per George Carlin)....... I live in a nice home, drive a nice car/truck.....why not carry a nice gun? I've been carrying the same "stuff" since the early 90s...... too old to change I guess!

Even thought of keeping a G19 for those "s----/dirty jobs days" but I had a Smith 915 for that...... so when someone was willing/wanted to trade a S&W Model 19 for a Glock 19....... done deal!!!

Default DAO for carry ...

I've evolved from decades of 1911's in several flavors and carried them confidently cocked and locked.

Now my needs and habits have evolved from DA/SA (a 5906 for 25 years, though I rarely carried it) then several DA/SA 3g's 3913LS & 3914NL to a 4040PD still a favorite for carry. I've also adopted AISW carry and cocked and locked in that position is a bit unnerving.

But now I've come to like DAO for carry as one less thing to be wrong when you really need it. Decocker only would be OK to, but I don't have one.

I've got a 6946, 4046 and a 4546 in DAO, but my very favorite carry semi-auto is a 3914 DAO. Thin, light, and has a double strike capability that is unusual in DAO Smiths.

Big Dot sights are also my favorite for carry as well a disabled magazine safety.

I'm in the reverse-

I enjoy shooting my ladyfriend's Glock 19 at the range. When it comes to carry, though, I'm a little leery of the trigger, as I carry IWB. I know tens of thousands of folks do it, but I don't have a comfort level with it. I like the security of a DA trigger, without having to worry about a safety. It's an easy transition from revolvers, as well. Point and shoot.

As BAM stated, put me in a combat zone with a standard holster, or even if I knew there was going to be some shooting, I'll take the Glock.

Any of you who are familiar with my posts know that I'm a die hard 1911 guy.
I do own a few DA/SA autos and I can do fine with them if I have to. But for the most part, if I'm gonna go DA, it'll be a revolver.

Muss asks a good question:

Quote:
Preference for what?
In this context, I did not specify for carry, fighting, range work, competition. Just overall preference. That's it.

Nice questions but many ways to answer it.

I answered the question as in "if you could only have ONE pistol, what would you have?"

In that regard, I chose Traditional DA/SA. Mostly because I feel most comfortable having a round in the chamber, safety off, and a long, heavy first shot. (Yes, I'm a revolver guy).

HOWEVER, from all pistols, my favourite pistol of them all is the Browning Hi-Power. Didn't choose "SA" in the poll because I wouldn't carry it or use for HD, that's all.

I like single action the most, and my favorite semi-auto pistols are all single action.

I've never really cared for DA/SA, as I like the same trigger pull everytime, but I shoot my SIG Sauer P226 better than any other comparable pistol, so I carry it. It's probably all the revolver shooting, but I actually do a little better with the DA trigger than the SA trigger on it.

I really like the HK LEM, which is often described as a short reset DAO.
My next preference is DA/SA with decocker only.

All of my defensive semi-autos for around the house/carry are DA/SA with decocker only.

I do not like safeties on my defensive guns as I also frequently carry revolvers, and this removes the chance for a serious "uh oh" when I need the gun to go bang the most.

For a full size pistol, striker fired. For a CCW gun, DA/SA.

I don't consider the fancy lever on the trigger to be a safety mechanism except for the rare circumstance if you drop the gun or something. And I prefer not to have a safety lever, so a long DA first trigger pull is my safety in a concealed weapon.

For a "going to war" gun (general range fun, IDPA, or zombie apocalypse), I'm fine with my M&P 9 and/or Glock 21. I like the rapid trigger action for a purpose like that.
