Colt Cobra (not new one) Info Needed
Stopped by my vintage and collectable LGS this afternoon to check on S&W revolvers as I had not been there in over a month. Saw a use blue Colt Cobra, 2" that caught my eye. It had a shrouded barrel and wrap around walnut grips with no medallions. It was about a 90% revolver (needed a cleaning) and appear grips were original. No box, papers, etc. Look to be mostly carry wear.
I only own one Colt revolver (a 1956 Official Police) so I am not familiar with the different changes over the years. In checking on line it appears the shrouded barrel was introduced in 1973.
The dealer had rather high price on it. Any information on cobras, price ranges, etc. would be appreciated.

Not a Colt expert, but your date seems right. Love my Cobra! It did go out of time a few years ago. Sent it back to Colt and it has worked fine since. Price varies great depending on condition. Aluminum frame was prone to finish loss. I see them advertised in the $800.00 range here in Florida. Had mine coated in Gunkote. Great carry revolver!

Thanks - Just the information I was looking for. The one I saw today was like the heavy barrel one in the last picture including the same grips.

It has the same dimensions as the steel frame Detective Special; the Agent of the same era had a shorter grip frame. If you have the SN and are curious you can visit the Colt website to get the production year. I think the prices quoted are high but admit I haven't shopped for one recently. Good luck in your decision.

I own a 1974 Cobra that is my everyday carry. Paid $340 for it and an old IWB holster few years ago at my favorite local pawn shop. It's definitely been carried a lot, it ain't pretty but it's tight and shoots where it's pointed. After 1973 when the shrouded barrel came out the Cobra was rated for +P with an examination by Colt or a good gunsmith after 1000 rounds.
A fine revolver IMHO, perhaps the finest snubby ever made.

I still own my first off-duty Colt Cobra, purchased new for $85 in 1968, and it still shoots great. It's not carried much anymore but does go to the range from time to time.

The Cobra was introduced in 1950. Weighed 15 oz. 6 less than a Dick
Special. 6 rather than 5 was what Colt stressed in their ads. Jim Cirillo
used a Cobra for back up and off duty. There is a shroud to cover the
hammer if you are so inclined. I have an Agent. It does have a little
shorter grip frame, but otherwise similar. The Cobra worked quite well
for Jack Ruby, November 24, 1963. He fatally shot Lee Harvey Oswald,
the suspected assassin of President Kennedy, at Dallas Police headquarters.
I took the hammer spur off my Agent, rendering it DAO, and put
some Craig Spegel extended boots on it.
Shown here in a vintage Eubanks Pioneer holster on a Lawrence
cartridge belt.
