Colt New Service Quartet
I was stunned yesterday to find 4 high condition specimens in a local shop. 7 1/2" in .45 Colt, .455 Eley and .38-40 and a 6" .44 Russian and Special Target. All blue. All with lovely walnut stocks. The .45 and .455 with lanyard rings. All between $2,000 and $2,500. Accompanied by a 4" Army Special .38 (also with lanyard ring) and a Bankers Special with bobbed hammer. I did not see the price on the Banker, but didn't ask because I could already feel its weight in my pocket.
I did not even ask the clerk to show them to me. I was afraid I would not have the wherewithal to put them back. I haven't seen this many NSs for sale in one shop in nearly 40 years and then not in this condition.
If anyone is interested in off-brand collectibles PM me and I will provide contact info for the shop. Someone PLEASE PM me before I weaken.

Rdr Bill: My 1909 isn't a nice as yours. However it has smooth grips which are stampd R.A.C. (Rinaldo A. Carr, the US inspector at Colt), so I presume they are original.

These are a hand full, for sure. Here's a 1931 factory nickel .45 and the chopped 1917 I post every time the subject comes up. The 1917 has a smoother action than my Python.

Wow, that chopped 1917 is sweet!
I picked up mine many years back. I wish I knew some of the history about where it came from. Manufactured 1925.

Over the years, I've had a few New Service revolvers. The nicest one was a 95% 7 1/2" .38-40. I traded it off because I couldn't find ammo, dies or components. Had a 5 1/2" British .455, reamed to .45 Colt. That one was a good shooter. Another was a 2 1/2" .44-40 old style. The only one left is a 7 1/2" .45 Colt in kinda rough condition.
My PD had a number of handguns that you could check out as duty or back-up guns. I had a nice 1917 Colt that I carried as a duty gun for a while. I once shot a 59/60 state qualification with it. It had the typical heavy action, but was super smooth. I tried to buy that one when I retired, but no go. While the NS is a bit big for my smallish hands, I still like 'em.

I've got a well used M1909. I know the revolver used the Caliber .45, Model of 1909 cartridge, and that it is common for standard .45 Colt cartridges to end up below the extractor star. Does the .45 Colt New Service also suffer from this or was the extractor / cylinder different between the M1909 and .45 Colt New Service?

Don't you know, we all love to post our New Service's and 1909s, and in my case 1917. This one seems to date to 1920, so missed WWII.
In really nice condition for 97 years old, (except for the amateur "checkering" job a previous owner attempted)...hope I look this good when I get there!!
Best Regrads, Les

I have a New Service that baffles me. It chambers and shoots .45 Colt ammo like any good .45 Colt revolver should, but it also accepts and functions with .45 ACP in clips or .45 Auto Rim. The chambers of the cylinder have as smooth walls as I have seen with just the proper .45 Colt shoulder visible; I do not believe the cylinder has been altered. Roll mark on barrel says "COLT D.A. .45" like a 1917. The black hard rubber stocks look like they were born on the gun, they fit so well.
They are big guns.

My 7 1/2" .45 Colt (marked as such on the barrel) will also chamber .45 ACP in full moon clips. Mine is kinda loose though.
