Not a S&W but This Taurus 990 has been a solid performer for several years. Worth every cent that I paid for it.

I have a Model 63 I bought new in 1979. I also have the target stocks. The gun is a pleasure to own. My favorite 22 hands down.

I've had several .22 revolvers and always go back to the 22s. The ones in this picture cost between $275.00 and 600.00. The 63 and the model 48 are also rans.



If you can find one of these older High Standard Double Nines for a reasonable price they make good plinkers. They are single/double action.



The Ruger Bearcat is a pretty little revolver, but I find it slow and awkward to load.



Find yourself a good K-22 and don't look back.

that must have been an early one. Mine was $62.50

Not sure that one is going to pass the clunky test.

How about a handful of H&R revolvers. The Sportsman on the top left is great, but they are becoming a bit pricy. The 22 Special on the top right is pretty nice and the 922 on the bottom is hard to beat for $150.00

Not near the quality of a 17, K22 or 617, but inexpensive, not klunky, and a good shooter. Double action trigger pull is on the heavy side though...

Not much interested in 22 mag. Not looking for a "serious antique". Looking for something different than the dozen or so S&W's that I own. I want something that looks like a cowboy revolver for my 22 revolver to plink with. I want something that is fun to shoot and relatively easy to maintain. Don't mind paying a little bit, but $1,000 is too much for any 22. Thank you for all the great replies.

Rick, I think that you had the answer in your original post. The Ruger single action is perhaps one of the best "cowboy" style single actions in .22LR available. The Single 10 can be had for around $500 so, it should fit your requirements easily.

I bought a Ruger SP101 .22 last year. It was over $150 cheaper than the 617 they also had. Yeah, the trigger pull was pretty heavy. I say "was" because it has smoothed out a lot just by firing and dry firing. Never had one dud out of that revolver, and I only shoot bulk pack ammo. First 500 rounds (in the first day) were twenty year old Thunderbolts. All went bang.

This discussion really brings out a point, there are as many different tastes, as there are Folks. Here is a picture of one of my favorite .22s, a Ethan Allan 7 shot .22 short black powder revolver. I t cost me a pocket knife, in a trade with a Police Chief. There is quite a story behind this .22, but the request was just to show 'em.

Look for a Moson made Dan Wesson .22, you will be pleased.

I probably have too many .22 handguns, amongst them a K22, a M18 and a M63.
Enjoy them, but did get interested in older breaktop .22's a few years back.
Already had an old Iver Johnson 'Sealed Eight' breaktop and ran up on an H&R M999 Sportsman. They seem to be getting harder to find.

I'll make no claims the H&R outshoots the Smiths, but it does very well.
Guess the appeal to me is they harken back to a time where even an affordable, blue collar utility gun was darn good quality. Take note that nothing like that is produced in .22 any longer.

I've bought two Ubertis over the past year, both used for $325 (one local and one via auction and price included transfers etc.). They are well made, really pretty and fun to shoot. I don't know if they will hold up for the long haul, but I don't abuse them so I think they will out last me.

I don't know how many 22's I've owned over the years but it's been a bunch of them. Aside from several S&W's I've owned Colts, Dan Wesson, Harrington & Richardson's, High Standards, Ruger, Taurus, and a couple I don't even remember the names.

Still own a couple even though I seldom shoot them. A Ruger Single-Six, 50th anniversary model, and a High Standard R-101. They're both good shooters.

It's pretty hard to beat a Ruger Single-Six. I've never seen much sense in the 10 shot one, but I suppose if someone likes it, there's nothing wrong with it. I liked the fixed sights on the 50th anniversary Model. It makes it look more like a Colt SAA.



I got this one, a High Standard Sentinel, R-101 more as a novelty than anything else, but I've owned a couple other Sentinel's and they're great guns. About the size of a K-frame Smith, nine shots, aluminum frame, they're light as a feather. Great guns for packing all day.



Of the others I'd put Dan Wesson at the top of the heap. The only down is they're bigger and heavier than a K-frame Smith.

Taurus. A lot of people knock Taurus, but I've always had good luck with them. However I always buy used, so the ones I've owned have been older ones, with wood grips. They made for a short time apparently, a Model 96 which is a more or less clone of the Model 17. If you can find one, it's worth checking out. The same goes for the older Model 94's. There is one pictured earlier in this thread. Well worth checking out.
