I hit a bunch of gun shops in Northern NY, some of then quite big and as of now none have had a new Cobra come in!
I have a older Cobra and curious how it will stack up to the new kid. In retrospect perhaps I should have said how will the new one stack up against the old ones?
Course mine will be much lighter than the new Colt with the same name.

None in my area either, but I'll keep looking. I saw a Kimber revolver once, but someone bought it and I haven't seen one since.

There out there, I have handled 4 in four different LGS. I did not buy as I'm waiting for the price to drop.(Hopefully) ALL had very good triggers. One large LGS in my area has gotten in 6 over the last month.
I imagine the same scenario will work for the new Colts once/if they start showing up for sale.

I am #1 on the list at my LGS. They have no idea when one will show up but when it does I will have a range report and photos for all. The 2017 Cobra will be a nice bookend for my 1957 Cobra.

I was able to handle (not fire) a slightly used one at my LGS. The owner had it about a week before trading it off.
I have to say that my desire for one has been greatly reduced. Maybe it was just a lemon? The trigger wasn't bad, but stacked nearly at the end. The reset was bad, IMO. There was not much room for error when using rapid pulls. Short stroking was very easy to do. Perhaps with a lot of practice I could get used to it.
Even the fit and finish was so-so. We pulled out a Charter Arms and compared. Besides the Pony on the side, they looked similar.
I was really looking forward to that gun. It wasn't "bad", it was just much less than I was hoping for. This was one gun. Perhaps the next one I see will be better. I hope so.

Doubtful if Ma. residents will see em on the shelves. Gotta submit so many for their torture tests before compliance.

Indeed.
The timing was very different as well. I've never owned a Colt revolver so it might be normal. It seemed a bit slow. I am used to a Smith locking in just before hammer release. The Cobra didn't have that feel and almost seemed to be still turning as the hammer dropped. This was only during slowish pulls. I only did a few of those.

My opinion:
1) Nice new Colt, Mk III style.
2) For a .38 special
3) Not too expensive (for retail)... outrageous for any .38 right now because of demand....
4) Can do better with a Model 66 2 1/2" .357.

The new Cobra looks more like the SS version of DSII aka the SFVI (shown below).
BTW these had the reputation of having the lightest DA triggers of any Colt revolver.

I will say this for the new Colt, at least it doesn't have some kind of silly built in lock.

From my January Shot Show thread
Quote:
Another one of the pre-SHOT Show stories was Colt's return to the revolver market with the NEW Colt Cobra
While it is called a Cobra this is not developed from the old Cobra.
|
The Cobra was developed out of where the DS-II/SF-VI left off.
The ammunition that was on hand at Colt's booth on the SHOT Show range for us was the Colt branded ammunition that is being manufactured by DoubleTap. It was quite stout for a 38 special load
I handled three of the new Cobras and shot two of them. Both the single and double action pull on these revolvers was fantastic. Accuracy was great. I was tapping the 25 yard gongs with little trouble.
The only downside is the finish. They actually look better in these photographs than in person. It is of low quality, much like the last run of 38 special Colt Agents or the Colt 1991s. Since the construction is stainless, it would not cost too much to do a nice final polish

After my passion for Smith and Wesson, comes a love for Colts. But I can't for the life of me understand why this is being labeled a "Cobra".
A Detective Special is a Police Positive Special with a 2" (some 3") barrel, and a steel frame. A Cobra is a Detective Special with an alloy frame. An Agent is a Cobra with short stocks, or grips. Alloy frame.
This is clearly a Detective Special if it has a steel frame. Why not call it that?? One of the most famous names in the firearms history. Why muddy the waters by calling it a Cobra? They did the same thing with the poor Commander. Changed the name around over the years til now it doesn't mean much. You wouldn't see Smith and Wesson calling an automatic pistol a "Chiefs Special", or a semi automatic rifle a "Military and Police", now would you??? Of course not, it would get everyone confused!!!
I have two Detective Specials, one pre shroud, and one with a shroud. Two Cobras, one with and one without the shroud, and the same thing with the Agent. Also have a Banker's Special, a Pocket Positive, and a Diamondback with a 2" barrel. So I really like Colt snubs, but I think that I'll have to pass on this one.
Best Regards, Les

^^^^what he said. The grass is greener... Not the slightest bit interested. 25ozs (IIRC) in a 6-shot .38? Sorry, my .357 340s are about half the weight. I feel the concept is more than a little late for a new mfg gun, however nice it may be.

I think there should be a "tongue-in-cheek" emoji Anyway, I think this kind of thing happens because no one asks the guys and gals on the line who are actually building the things what they think. The ad agencies based in Manhattan or Chicago are deciding what to name them. And they get focus groups from the cities where they are based, not really representative of the typical gun enthusiast I would guess. I get the feeling that the strategy is to eventually expand the line following a snake theme: Cobra, King Cobra, Viper, Diamondback, Boa, Anaconda, and (gasp) Python--which may or may not resemble the originals. The possibilities are intriguing, though. Think of what a "Copperhead" or "Black Mamba" or "Sea Snake" or "Death Adder" might look like. Imagine walking into a gun store and seeing a Death Adder in 555 Colt Magnum in the case.

I'll be getting the first one I can find. The price is comparable to other American manufacturered steel framed revolvers and the fact that it's only a 38 doesn't bother me. The vast majority of the reviews out there say the trigger is great. If anything I'm surprised it's priced as competively as it is given that it's got the Pony stamp on it.
Im assuming the naming convention comment regarding S&W's was sarcastic. A S&W M&P could refer to a 100 year old K frame revolver, a new plastic pistol, or their AR-15 rifle. And of course a Victory model could be referring to a new .22 semi-auto or a WW2 era "V" serial number revolver.

I HAVE SEEN a few trickle through on GB and they sold for STUPID MONEY!!!!
None of the LGS here have gotten them in yet - unless they went to special customers at special prices and never made the display shelf. After a while the availability will be better and the crazy prices will settle down. For right now my 3rd Generation Dick Special is doing just fine for me.

Least they could have done was call it Colt Agent since it has a ****** finish like my late production Agent.
Only mine didn't cost but 1/4 of the going rate of the new ones.

That's correct, and they cost a lot less than S&W, and have a following. I don't think a Korth has a IL either.
