Default Marlin Camp-Carbine in .45 ACP.......what's it worth?? PHOTOS ADDED

Got a local buddy with a Marlin Camp-Carbine chambered in .45 ACP and he may sell it and I am considering purchasing.

Question is, has anyone recently sold or purchased one of these? Trying to find a price which is fair for both of us.

Obviously the .45 ACP version is less common than the 9mm.

Thoughts are appreciated.

As mentioned above......we are both trying to find a fair price that works for both. I believe he has the original box/papers.

I have seen completed auctions without the box or papers sell for in the $700-$800 for the .45 ACP model.

I am not sure I will pursue this one.....it's not a "Must Have" for me.....but will see what price he is willing to take for it.

Thought:
Where does one find decent magazines for said gun? Decent 1911 magazines will work.
Read this thread...What mags for my Marlin camp 45? which 1911s? | The High Road
It also talks about wanting a 21# recoil spring. Seems like solid advice. Maybe you can get one of those promag ridiculously long magazines to play with also.

I will check out the link.....I already own a 25 round 1911 Magazine which would be a hoot to shoot!

I had one of the .45 camp rifles. It was a fun gun to shoot, with target loads on a misty morning I could see the vapor(?) trail from the bullet and follow it to the target. I used all kinds of 1911 mags with no problems, always shot 200 gr LSWC, once I ran a mag of GI issue though with nary a hitch. I ended up trading for S&W with a trade value of $750.

Yeah I am thinking $800 would be the max for the Camp Carbine with the box/papers and an extra mag or two.

I appreciate the feedback guys and will let you know if I end up going for it.

$800 is probably top dollar for the .45 models (9mms typically run a few dollars HIGHER than the .45s but if it is a friend then then that is worth something) I passed on a nearly new 9mm with box & papers for $750 a while back because of a potential issue with the 'Camp' models that I was made aware of - PM me for details if you are interested in knowing what it was. Kind of bummed me out because I always wanted a Camp 9 and almost bought one new in the late 90's when they were still in the stores gunracks!

I have read up on the issues and I am leaning towards putting the $800 into another S&W. Trying not to stray too often and stay focused......Besides, there are plenty of AR platform pistol caliber carbines out there that don't have the Camp Carbine issues.

FWIW - I saw one of these for sale locally not long ago, and they were asking $650.00 for it. It came with a leather sling, and el cheapo scope - oh, and it was chambered in .45ACP. It looked to be in very good condition.

Dave

I would pay from $600 to $750 dependent upon condition and number of magazines, esp. factory magazines. I wouldn't sell one for twice that . . .

UPDATE:
Got a chance to examine the carbine and goodies today.......so, here's what the package contained.
The original box and paperwork, (3) 7-round magazines, WWII mag pouch, Original wood stock and composite folding stock, and a scope base/rings with a Thompson Center red-dote scope, and several extra Wollf Springs.

My buddy who owns this is not the original owner and he has not shot the carbine. So my thoughts are that the original owner spent the time to work the kinks that are common with these worked out.

Now it's decision time......kind of a cool little pea shooter!!

My thoughts at this point is that it's at least an $800 package.

I'll give a thumbs up to the Camp Carbine and yep, it's a hoot with a 25 round magazine. It's factory tapped for a small and easy-to-mount rail and red dot scope.

The "issue" I am aware of is a possible crack in the stock aft of the receiver. I installed a buffer which was easy to do and just a few dollars and supposedly would reduce the risk of a crack.

Even if it's unfired, toss the factory (hard white plastic) buffer and get one of the new urethane ones.
Blackjack Buffer
While you're in there, a new recoil spring is a worthwhile addition.

There are plenty of extra recoil springs included with the package. If I end up with it I will inspect to see if the previous owner has changed out the stock buffer. Thanks for the link!!

Sounds like a good deal, and a decision you may need to make. I have a fondness for pistol caliber carbines. I currently own 2 - an M-1 carbine (Inland), and a Marlin 1894 lever gun in .357 Magnum. I've been considering a Ruger .44 Magnum carbine that I don't really need, but I sure do want. Best of luck to you.

Regards,

Dave

I have had a Camp 45 since the early 90's, and enjoy using it along with my 1911's. If I am using a different or no sidearm, I prefer a M-1 Carbine with 110grain soft hollow points!

The only advantage that the Camp 9/45 have is ease of mounting an optical sight (mine has a 30mm red dot sight, for both eyes open sighting).

Dad had a Camp 9 set up like my camp 45. He also had a raccoon problem worse than mine! An his house was over a mile to anybody's in any direction! One night, his dog went nuts and sad spotted 5 raccoon kits lined up on a limb. Raccoon eyes reflect red, so looking through the red dot when the kits had 3 red eyes, he would pull the trigger! Only the fifth one got away! That would be a little much for the M-1.

These are very nice guns with a lot of fun! Very desirable and wouldn't think twice to pick one up if I could. Someone mentioned ar a AR platform... Don't be that boy with a toy gun....get a real gun!

Good heavens!!! I wouldn't have to think for two seconds on that deal. It's like brand new. Heck I'll give him $800 for the rifle, wood stock and mags. If you pass drop me a PM.

That looks like a pretty good deal. I'd be pressed to not take it.

I enjoy shooting my 9mm version. They're pretty accurate out around 50 yds.

Am I the only one who thinks that taking that perfectly fine Marlin and putting all that "tacticool" garbage on it only makes it look "tacti-stupid"? It is a fine looking gun just the way it left the factory.

There's at least two of us that would put that thing back to the original look. That's the whole point of having one, I thought!

I'd have that stock back to wood in about 2.3 seconds. Otherwise, that is a mighty fine looking rifle, and well worth the prices discussed above . . .

Mine is a 9mm.
The deluxe model with the checkered stock.
Removed the perfect stock for safekeeping.
Found a battered plain one.
Fixed, textured and painted it for everyday use.
With the Ultradot, it's quite accurate.

I have a 9 and a 45. Both are a hoot to shoot and use them regularly in plate (9) and bowling pin (45) matches.

A bit of advice though. If you have either with an uncracked original stock buy a Boyds laminated replacement stock and set the original one aside. All Camp carbines will eventually crack the factory stock right behind the receiver - whether you replace the buffer and/or springs or not.

BTW: 45s are generally harder to find than the 9mm versions and from my experience go for $700 to $900.

You could thump some hogs jumped in the brush with that rifle and these--although I would leave the nice wood at home and use those plastic stocks for heavy woods/ATV carry.

I decided to go ahead and grab the Model 45 today.......got her all cleaned up and it's in great shape showing minimal use/wear.

I plan to use this carbine so the wood stock, AS SEXY AS IT IS, will stay home rather than get beat up on the ATV and trudging through the heavy Juniper brush and prickly pear we have around here.

That said, when I take her out for a night on the town she will be sporting wood, LOL!

Smile WELL.....

SINCE YOU'VE BOUGHT IT, I DON'T KNOW WHAT I'VE GOT TO SAY MATTERS MUCH. I'VE OWNED ONE AND GOT RID OF IT BECAUSE IT REALLY OFFERED NO ADVANTAGE OVER MY 45 PISTOLS. IT'S NOT ANY MORE ACCURATE, NOT AS PORTABLE, AND HAD TO BE THE DIRTIEST SHOOTING WEAPON I'VE EVER RUN ACROSS. IT'S A STRAIGHT BLOWBACK DESIGN THAT DUMPS 100% OF A ROUND'S CRUD RIGHT INTO THE RECEIVER. I'D RECOMMEND YOU THINK ABOUT A ULTRASONIC CLEANER IF YOU DON'T ALREADY OWN ONE. BECAUSE IT'S SO SIMPLE, IT WAS HOWEVER, VERY RELIABLE. I GUESS IT JUST WASN'T MY CUP OF TEA BUT I SURE HOPE THAT YOU ENJOY IT!!

Yes, I own an ultrasonic cleaner......but the gun is very easy to take-down and clean/service......and if done regularly there should be no reason to mess with the ultrasonic. If I am anything like you guys/gals I have a safe full of fun stuff to shoot and most of what I own does not see heavy usage unless it's one of my match pistols.

But I do appreciate the input......and I will certainly enjoy it, but as with most of my non-S&W firearms, this one may find it's way to the classifieds some day.

Cheers,

Now you need to add a Camp 9 to the collection, loads of fun also.
Enjoy that 45.

I've worked up loads using 90 grain XTPs with Vihtavuori powder, about the cleanest burning stuff around.
Helps a lot keeping things (relatively) clean.

That stock/paint job look really nice, there are some durable finishes out there these days, good idea. May have to scan the net for a stock.
Curious if the 9mm and .45 ACP stocks are identical?? Do you know?

From what I have read on forums I dare not mention, the 9 and 45 stocks are indeed one and the same.
Good luck in your search.

Congrats on a great gun. I had one for years, but traded it to a friend who wanted one for his kid.

Mine had the hardest ejection of any gun I've owned. I used to shoot gophers with it from my truck until one of those .45 empties shattered my rearview mirror.

It definitely made an impression on the gophers, though.

Thumbs up

The little Marlins are fun plinkers in either caliber. A friend had a .45, that I got to shoot and do some chronographing with, and I've had several 9MM Camp Carbines. Both reliable little guns whose major drawback to me was always how quickly the receiver area gets absolutely filthy and powder fouled due to the straight blowback action. But, I still have one of the 9N nickel 9MM versions that I enjoy so much I put up with the dirty action and cleaning requirements.

BTW, in chronographing a variety of ammo in both calibers, we found that the .45 version picked up little, sometimes no, velocity over a 5" pistol. The 9MM Carbine would sometimes pick up ~200 fps over a 5" pistol depending on the ammo used. All great fun though. Enjoy

A few years ago, I needed a stock for my camp .45.
I searched all over the internet and could not find one.
Finally got one at Bob's gun parts. It was new and I
think I payed $125 for it.... What can you do?

The channel for the barrel in the 45 stock is a bit wider and deeper than on the 9 stock from my experience.

I donated the stock to Boyds from my Camp 9 that they used develop their line of Camp rifle stocks.. On the 9s their stocks fit perfectly. On the 45s you have to do some inletting so the barrel doesn't bind.
