Default Remington Model 51 Engraved

I own only one engraved gun and it has some damage/pitting. But, it was cheap and I always wanted a Model 51 so...

Nice! When I was younger, this was always the pistol referred to when commenting on the grip angle of the S&W Model 39. The phrase "user-friendly" hadn't been invented yet, nor had that new-fangled word "ergonomic." To illustrate how new the word "ergonomic" is, when I looked it up in a dictionary, there was a tiny picture of an FN FAL.

Does anyone remember the word they used to describe the perfect grip angle of the Model 51?

TIA

Kevin, I know you to be a gentleman who is extremely knowledgeable in firearms but are you sure that's a model 51? My friend has one and it looks like this.

His is the original Model 51 (very cool!). What you posted is the recent redesign.

Many,

If only you could read! It's right there on the slide of your friend's gun: that's a Model R51, not a Model 51. :-)

Regards,

Nice small English scroll work and intertwining gold line work. Beautiful looking job on a great pistol.

Any British or other foreign proof marks discreetly marked on the bbl or the frame?
Any idea on the ID of the Crest on the right side?

The back of the slide has the numeral '2' inlaid and the bottom of the slide has the numeral '1' inlaid. I was hoping someone would comment on the shield or crest on the frame. At first I assumed it might be Muslim. However, doing some online searches leads me to believe it is the symbol for a town in Germany.

Very tastefully engraved. I'd be pleased I I owned it.

That is awesome! I have a couple of them, and they are fine pistols. Mine aren't engraved, however. Yours is very tastefully done in my opinion. I would be very proud of it.

Lowrider, Your friend's handgun is a recent *******ization of the original model 51, designed by John Pedersen. They were way ahead of their time, and more expensive than most pocket pistols of their day.

Thanks for the comments. It's a shame that someone neglected it as the engraving and gold inlay is extremely well executed. It is reminiscent of English shotguns but I assume it was done in Germany. Unfortunately, I got no history with the gun. It does not have any foreign proof/view marks and no import marks.

Or (since I own one)....
It is a subcompact cc pistol with a Pedersen action capable of shooting 9 mm +P.

I have one of these that had been my Grandfathers gun. Passed down, I have it now. I like it a lot. It has been shot a lot and I still shoot it more than any other compact pistol I own. Neat gun. That one is sure nicer looking than mine!

Best handgun Remington ever made. A true classic that works as well as it looks.

Manny, have you gotten your tongue out of your cheek yet ?
I've never seen an engraved model 51 before, yours is outstanding.

I'm not sure the first batch was capable of much of anything. Are the new ones better?

Lowrider, I knew you were just kidding, but it took me a long time to get over S&W calling their plastic pistols "M&P's", and I'm still having problems with the new "Victory" .22's - not enough time has passed I reckon.

Everything really does just go round and round, doesn't it?

Model520Fan, having gotten a pretty good M51 Remington in .380 (c.1919) a few years ago, did some research on them.
True, the term 'ergonomic' nor 'user-friendly' were not in use. The early Remington ads for the M51 touted it as 'good in the hand' and 'self aiming', with regards to the grip angle, controls and grip safety.

Think we could all use more guns that are 'self aiming' !
