Talking Just back from the Engraver

I had a recent bonus check that I wanted to put to some good use. My lifelong collection of firearms is already rather robust so I did not go out looking for a new firearm

I have always admired the Walther PPK pistols that were engraved in the oak leaf pattern.

As it just so happens, I have owned and sometimes carried a stainless PPK for decades.

I also have made acquaintances with a retired jeweler that is still doing a few engraving projects

I bet you already know where I am going with this line of thought

So after a brief chat I let him have at it. I did not ask for a time frame, in fact I told him to leave my project for for free time and do his normal stuff first. After all I was in no rush

Well it has returned after four months

I am very happy with the results and think he did a great job on the piece. Now I am contemplating letting him do my blue PPK and add in some gold wire line work on the borders . . . OH, I guess I need to wait for that next bonus check

I guess I am going to have to start looking for some wood grips to make this one look better

I think it's beautiful! Would you mind sharing a ballpark range of what the work cost?

That would be kind of unfair to engravers earning their living doing this.

He gave me the good Buddy/Secret Squirrel/Wink Wink special deal because I have taken care of him and his kids on other things.

I will say it was comfortably south of $1000 and I think it was a bargain based on the coverage. Remember he also engraved OVER the factory slide text and Walther logo.

That's pretty, any particular reason as to why the frame wasn't done?

Yes

When he retired he moved to a different state. So sending only the slide solved all kinds of legal issues regarding ownership/possesion/repair, etc.

That looks great.

I owned this 1979 Factory engraved PPK/S for awhile. Wish I had kept it, but like always, something else called to me and I needed the $$.

Having handled several of the WW II period presentation pieces over they years, I just want to add that you have a nice piece of work there.

To the owner: Get a copy of Rankin's Volume II "Walther" and you'll see several examples owned by NAZI bigwigs of engraved Walthers. Great eye candy!

I have Jim's books. He lives 30 minutes South of me.

A few of my most prized pieces came through him. Specifically my Deluxe Texas Ranger and my Colt Bicentennial set

At the time I had a very poor cash flow and fortunately Jim had a soft heart for beginning collectors. He allowed me to make both of these purchases on a Lay-A-Way basis, a practice that I have continued when I come across new collectors.

I have a PPK/S that I would like to have engraved. If you don't mind, how much did it cost?
Thank you

Engraving looks great!
You are right about it needing nicer wood stocks.
Cleaning the crud out of the hole in the hammer would have gone a long way in your photo. lol

That's so pretty, it hurts my eyes just to look at it on my monitor. I'd probably have to take some medication if I saw it in person.
