I just bought another AR, which I didn't need but a new Colt
for $619 was something I just couldn't pass up. It's a fairly
new model I believe. Colt calls it the Expanse M4 Carbine. It
has a flat top receiver with rail and 4 position stock and a 16"
barrel with a 1/7 twist and a fixed A2 front sight. The manual
states that it has a 5.56 Nato chamber and will handle all
mill spec ammo. As far as the price making it comparable to
other low priced ARs on the market the standard Colt quality
is obvious. Anyone seen a review anywhere?

Without knowing more, I am going to assume this is one of their newer models put out to compete with other low end rifles from other manufacturers. By eliminating some of the features of their normal lineup and skipping some of the quality control processes they can offer a product that is competitive with the likes of DPMS, Del-Ton, Wyndham, etc.

I have a COLT LE 6940. It is flat all the way across the top, with flip up front and rear sights. I love it.

There's plenty of reviews out there, including several KABOOMS. This is the rifle Colt outsourced in order to meet a price point. There's very little Colt in that rifle

Yes more quality tends to cost more, but more cost doesn't mean more quality. There are sub $500 ARs that will last longer and shoot more accurately than some $1,000+ ARs

I have $15 folding knives that will hold a better edge, last longer, work smoother and are stronger than 95% of the $100 knives on the market

That's why I always read every user comment I can find before making any major purchase of any kind.

Purpose of rifle, ghetto blaster or something a bit more precise?

I think both the Ruger and S&W rifles in the $500 range are better than the Colt expanse. I looked in to buying one last year, but didn't like what I read about them. Here's a good link to check out.

Same as the three other ARs I already own. Plinking, home
defense, maybe behind the seat of my truck while away from
home, varmint hunting on my rural property. An AR carbine
is just a neat rifle to own to me and I don't feel the need to
torture test them just because they are semi auto military
type guns.

I agree, no need to torture test any weapon. I just nickname my home defense AR the ghetto blaster. I have open sighted, red dots, and scoped rifles from store bought to home builds which include a couple of wildcats. My only complete rifle
store bought, is a Colt from 97. It shot in the 8's with 77 gr Nosler competition. With reloads mid 6's, not the best shot group, but consistent. I replaced the Mil-spec trigger with a G2S. Good luck with your new purchase and happy shooting.

I bought a Colt Expanse a few months ago, it was a basic AR no notch for the m203 grenade launcher on the barrel, no big deal as I'm fresh out of grenades, it isn't a chrome lined barrel either, that is more of an accuracy/longevity issue. The gun functions well and is fairly accurate. For the price you can't go wrong. It makes a good basic first AR to wet your feet into the platform.

I'm far from an AR expert, but bought an Expanse a year or so ago. Good quality, accurate rifle that shoots slightly better than the 6920 I got at the same time. Whether the slight accuracy advantage is due to a non-chrome-lined bore, I don't know. It would take a comparison of several rifles to find out.

These guns are made in Texas for Colt, but they're still Colt products. As such, they should retain a higher resale value and be easier to sell than many other ARs. I realize the tightly wound might see that in a different way than intended. Even without having owned any, I'm pretty sure other quality ARs will shoot and function as well as a Colt. Some may be more accurate.

Why not sell all four and buy two nice ones? I have a nice AR and an AK. The AR gets the good jobs and the AK does the dirty work. They both excel at their assigned tasks.

I have several mid priced AR's and they serve my needs as well as the Colts I own. The Expanse isn't going to be the same quality rifle as the higher end Colts. It can't be at the reduced price. Some say it's a pile of junk. Some say it's just as good as the higher end "real" Colts with a few cost saving features. I'm guessing the truth is somewhere in the middle.

After doing a bit more reading on the net I have learned that the Colt Texas facility shut down some time ago and all ARs
are now built on the same production line in CT. So regardless
of model it is highly likely many will have the same parts
regardless of price. Maybe not all parts but my Expanse has
a Colt lower and C marked upper, Colt bolt and probably
carrier as many are now unmarked. The barrel and front sight
have markings consistant with Colt products. There are some
differences between models but I still think that the Expanse
is a good rifle for the price.
