Spare change gun - rusty to trusty? We'll see.....
I was in one of my favorite spots - a police supply place that takes in old department issued and evidence guns. Nothing really caught my eye, except a High Standard Sport King .22 pistol that had fallen on hard times. Rusty, busted grip, no magazine, but sporting a 90 buck price tag. Hmmmmmm.
I am a dedicated collector of small change. I hadn't checked the balance on the spare change jar, but I told myself if it would cover the rusty .22 I'd get it.
Looked good, especially with those ones stuffed in there.
Oh yeah.........
So this morning I hauled my little piggy bank to Wells Fargo, where they informed me they didn't have a change counter anymore. I sure didn't feel like counting it out, so I found a Coin Star and ponied up a few bucks for the privilege of turning money into other money. With the ones I was still ahead.
Ol' Rusty was still there. A deal was struck and we headed home.
Here it is.
This could not stand. I broke out the cleaning goods and worked my way through the rust and crud. I still had part of a can of Brownell's Alumahyde Parkerizing stuff, so I let fly. A few coats, a trip to the oven, and a borrowed grip ( the left one wouldn't fit) and magazine from my other Sport King and I was back in business.
It's not perfect by far, but at least it won't scare horses and small children.
I'll try it at the range tomorrow. The bore is perfect, and the trigger pull is light and crisp. Grips and mags are still available, so I won't be into it for much no matter what.
My pal Charles, aka policerevolvercollector, can't have all the rescues (though his are usually much better, I admit)!

Nice, nice, nice. Great job, great rescue. Plus, you took before
AND after pictures. I never take any before pictures, although
I should. It's hard for some people to believe how something
that looks so wasted, can be turned into something so special.
I think "rescuing" is important as it is rewarding.

When I saw the title of the post, I immediately thought of your friend also . Nice save and time to fill the change jar up again for the rusty RM that appears at your LGS...

Consider loading only 2-3 rounds in the magazine at first. These older High Standard have a habit of going "Full Auto" as over the years the sear wears down.

Good Job
Nicely done on the save! I stumbled into a High Standard a couple years ago while making a deal on the gun I actually wanted. Wow what a nice surprise that gun is - I use it now, nearly exclusively to train new shooters as they can't help but do well with its inherent accuracy and fantastic trigger.
I just hope that the magazine outlives me.

Good story and great pictures! My Dad bought one for me when I was 15 - I still have it. He kept it locked up and I could only check it out for walks & plinking for a couple of years (well, OK - until I was 30! ... ). High Standard sold some really well made handguns.

The old girl has good bones and a little cosmetic work and she lives to shoot another day. Good job, Sigp.220.45!

As Doug Marcaida would say on Forged In Fire: It will keel!
The only problem was it would occasionally lock back with rounds still in the magazine. A tug on the slide and all was well. I suspect the borrowed right grip from my other Sport King, which is a much earlier gun, is the problem. It fits loosely and can't be tightened. The slide lock just sits in a recess and is held in place by the grip, and the loose grip lets it bounce up and engage. I'll see how it does with a new and properly fitting grip - if its still a problem I'll just take it out.
All in all I am happy with my low-buck gun. If anyone has a magazine or grips for sale, please shoot me a PM.

In a lot of ways, it's more satisfying to bring something cool back from the dead than just to go out and buy something new. Nice catch, and nice work.

Good score, and good job getting it up and throwing lead.
Nice kind of store to have handy, I'm fascinated by well-worn guns that you can get on the cheap. For $90 Ida scooped it up forthwith, even if it I thought it was a non-shooter.
