Default A Few Knives, Part 1

Here are a few of my knives, as promised a few weeks ago. More knife photos will be posted later. I will probably post photos of about 12 or 15 knives. Some are "user" knives and some are collector knives. (Thanks to kwselke for the photo tips, my prior photos were very blurry).

The knives shown here are:

-- Boker (made in Germany, current production), model 2020 folding hunter, rosewood handles, with two carbon steel blades.

-- Case, yellow trapper, with two CV blades (current production).

More knives:

G96 hunting knife, made in Japan, circa 1976 (more-or-less a Buck 119 copy).

Pocket knives: a Buck stockman (circa 1987) and a Schrade Old Timer, USA, two-blade, stainless (circa 1988).

Ahhh... The steady rest suggestion was for the camera, I assumed the knives would be in a stable position. Put a cutting board on the Cheese-It boxes and the knives on the cutting board.

The boxes are a literary/dramatic device known as foreboding, letting the reader know that somewhere along the line, somebody’s gonna cut the cheese.

I like that Anza. I have a few, but you don’t see that many around.

If that Old Timer is circa 1988 the blades should be 1095 carbon steel, my favorite other can Case CV.

As far as I know only Schrade's Uncle Henry line of pocketknives had stainless blades in that period, and I've owned a bunch of Old Timers and a few Uncle Henrys. Of course, since Taylor Cutlery bought the brand and shipped production to China, I think all the Old Timers--at least all the ones I've seen advertised--are stainless, probably 440A.

That would have been my assumption as well. But, the blade says "Schrade+" on it, plus "U.S.A."

That's a surprise. I don't think I've ever seen an older Old Timer like that.

Must be like S&W--never say never.

From discussions on Bladeforums, I seem to recall that for a brief time, US-made OTs were available in stainless, marked Schrade+. Dunno if that was all OTs during that period, or just some of them.

I have never had a US-made Old-Timer, just a Chinese-made stockman from Fleet Farm, stainless of course. At the time, it was my only slip joint. I had a use for it and used to stand up for it, but I am over that. Drab covers, poor fit and finish, and indifferent steel that will not take an edge.

More knives:

-- Browning hunter, circa 1995, made in Japan, by Hattori (I think), 440C blade (I think); reads "1 of 1000" on blade.

-- Imperial hunter, circa 1960 or maybe earlier, leather handle, factory-bent hand guard, steel butt cap. Brown stains on blade are grease marks (not a stainless steel blade).

It is awful what happened to Schrade. They went out of business in their 100th year, foreign competition. A way of life changed in NY. Generations of families worked there. I have a fixed blade scrimshaw drop point, and a few folders, and a couple 100 year commemorative lockbacks labeled accordingly( NIB ). S&W knives are also Taylor and Chinese made. I support our US knife industry and buy only USA made knives. Just me I guess.

I will admit, I do have a couple 55 YO Solingen hunting knives.

Benchmade, Kabar, Microtech, and Piranha and Case do it for me

I like your Case Trapper. I found a new one in a pawn shop that was pretty dirty and it looks good after I cleaned it up. I carry it in a Mini-Mag flashlight case on my belt. Works good and it's always there.

The G-96 copies Buck's Model 102. The M-119 is a larger knife.

G-96 also copied the Buck Model 110 a lot.
