Another utility rifle found, Savage 110 in 30/06.....
About a year ago, I traded a Ruger American Rifle in 30/06 in order to get some other gun, leaving me with hundreds of rounds of 30/06 ammo, factory and reloads. Tried to sell or trade the ammo, but couldn't get any interest in it. So, I figured I would find a cheap 30/06 rifle with iron sights to serve as a "Utility" rifle, one to have around if a rifle is needed in truck or boat, no optics to add weight or get out of whack.
It's hard to find a rifle today that is both cheap and has iron sights, most rifles sold today have no sights, CZ and Ruger sell rifles with iron sights but they are not cheap.
Found the solution the other day in a pawn shop, a 1980's vintage Savage 110. Priced at $300, this one came home with me for $275. It had a huge Tasco 4X16 scope on it, see through mounts that were popular "Back in the Day", and a cobra style leather sling. I immediately took the scope off and put on a military style sling.
Took it out today and shot it to verify operation and accuracy. Sights were regulated dead on with 150 grain Remington soft point ammo, from the sitting position I was getting about 2-3" groups at 100 yards. Shot my steel rabbit at 140 yards from the sitting position, five shots, five hits. This rifle is "Good To Go".......
Now I have to figure a way to carry it on my ATV, I have a scabbard that fits lever rifles, but not full size rifles:

Congrats- Savages are fine rifles and the 110 is one of the best values IMO.

A good rifle at a good price! Should handle anything you would ever need a rifle for.

I used to strap my shotgun to the vertical roll bar of my Jeep CJ's with a bungee cord.
Don't know if that would work on your ATV or not. Of course you might scratch it...my shotgun had been painted so I didn't worry about it.

All of the Savage rifles built around the 110 bolt action are good values. I have a single shot 112V in .223. Heavy, but even without any attempts at accurizing it, I have developed handloads which will consistently run 1/2"-3/4" five shot groups at 100 yards on a still day. I have even fired the occasional one-hole group. And that with a relatively cheap Tasco 4X - 12X variable power scope. That rifle has absolutely zero excess headspace, even factory loads require a little force to close the bolt on them. The barrel locking nut Savage uses is by far the simplest method to set headspace precisely.
About 5 years ago I bought a Maverick (Mossberg) bolt action .30-'06 rifle on sale at Academy for, I think, $189 (no sight included but it did have scope mounts). It shot very well, much better than I expected. I fired it very little (less than 50 rounds) and sold it a couple of years ago for more than I paid as I had no real need for it. My only complaint was a gritty trigger pull. That could have been easily fixed by adding a better replacement trigger, but under the circumstances, I didn't think it was worth the cost. But it was a legitimate bargain I would recommend to anyone.

I'm not keen on impressed checkering, and plain wood, but you got a valid bargain there.

I'd spring for a fixed 4 or 6 power scope and call it a day. You know the sights are on and you could have a really tremendous rifle out to several hundred yards.
How did the rabbit stay up for each shot? Or did you go and reset it?

You don't buy these for their cosmetics. They are damn good working guns.

Yes, the rabbit needs to be reset after each shot. I intend to get a swinging steel that I can shoot rifle rounds at (AR 500 steel), I have some in mild steel that I can shoot pistol caliber rifles with. Lots of fun...
The rabbit lives on a stump at the far end of my range (140 yards), I can sit at the back porch of my cabin and shoot it. Or go prone.
Then it's a short walk to reset and shoot it again.
A swinging steel would be better.

"Ain't many troubles that a man cain't fix with six hundred dollars and a 30-06."
Ahhh, the sitting position...maybe in my 30s.
That's a fine rifle you have there. Perfectly utilitarian.
