Blued steel and walnut
Guns used to be almost exclusively blued carbon steel and wood for the stocks. The bluing was like art work, and the wood stocks were expertly checkered.
Those days are gone. But, I will continue to keep my steel and wood guns, and hopefully pass them down to my kids and grand kids.
Below: S&W model 15-3, Ithaca 1911 (custom), and S&W model 539.

I have a few like that, too; they're way up there in the favorites department. The wood might be Goncalo Alves, though, not walnut.
The Model 25 currently has elkhorn stocks on it, I have to admit that. I will add pix in another reply.

I think pretty much every gun I have in stainless/nickel/etc. would be better in polished blued steel + walnut.

Hold onto em is right. Much more pleasing to admire and often made better . Too bad we don't see many of these models today.

Blued steel and walnut are very common in my little collection, here are just a few examples of some classic beauties:

It isn't so much an investment but rather always a quick fix for a serious addiction. Everytime it is just a short term medication .

That is a 1422, making it .22 l.r.
The 1522 is a .22 WMR, the 1430/1432 is a .222 Remington and the 1530/1532 is a .22 Hornet. The Mannlicher stocked model is a 1423 in .22 l.r.

To Andyd (post #18):
That's for sure a very nice Anschütz (Hunting) Rifle Collection !
Thanks for sharing.
(IMHO) All very well made and good shooting rifles, especially the .22l.r. "Stutzen" (= Mannlicher stocked / last picture)
and the .222Remington with Monte Carlo Stock (2. picture). The handy .22l.r. for a lot of shooting and the .222Remington
for "a bit more reach"...
Back to the thread:
M 29-2 (from 1978) + M 629-3 (from 1991)
Attached:
1. M 29-2 + M629-3 with Nill's on
2. Backside
3. + 4. Stunning, how a bit light can change the wood...

Blue Steel and real Walnut ....YES !
Actually any real wood. My sore spot , and it's been rubbed raw, is the stuff called " laminated wood" , now that's just a polite way to say PLYWOOD and plywood is ugly. Cheap and stable , yes .....but it's ugly.
I can't stand them and will not have them on my guns, handgun or long gun....it's just not proper.

Nothing beats the look of blued steel and walnut!
These favorites are stocked with cocobolo, but it's the same idea.

I made up and posted this on the Forum 1/15/17
Just take those old guns off of the shelf
I'll sit and play with 'em all by myself
Today's guns they ain't got the same feel
I like that old time wood 'n' steel
Don't try to force feed me plastic
That type of stuff it makes me puke on the floor
I don't like the way those plastic guns feel
I like that old time wood 'n' steel
Still like that old time wood 'n' steel
Those kind of guns they have just the right feel
I reminisce about guns with a wheel
And that old time wood 'n' steel
(with apologies to Bob Seeger)

I seem to be behind times, almost every gun I own is blued steel and walnut stocked. Once in awhile I will get one of the other
"Things" on trade, but they don't stay around long. Not only that
but I have certain cut off points on certain makes and models
that I will not go beyond.

I recently bought a 340PD no lock and immediately swapped out the rubber grip for factory wood w/a grip adapter. I've carried that way since 1968 and see no reason to change now.

I have two serious addictions, old S&W revolvers and old Winchester .22s.
Especially in Walnut and Blue steel.

I mostly agree.
However, I do not feel that the Wood must be walnut or that the steel must be Blue. Color Case hardened guns also fit in nicely plus I am a BIG fan of Blue Steel and Ivory or bone. Just nothing synthetic

I too love the looks of blued steel and checkered wood (usually, but not always walnut)!!! There have been some really nice examples above...thanks to all who have shared!!
Here's a couple from 1925, which in my opinion is right in the middle of the golden age for both Smith and Wesson and Colt, as well as some of the great rifle makers... Two Colts, a 1903 .32 ACP, and a 1908 .25 ACP:

Hey, colt saa!!
I mostly agree with you, I have some blue steel and ivory as well, and not all of my wood is walnut....but you left out your most famous revolver, the one in your avatar!! I wouldn't mind seeing that beauty again...

This thread is titled Blued steel and walnut
That revolver is scratched up stainless and Ivory. I did not think it fit in, but who am I to ignore a request . . . Here you go
I really LOVE the grips that the factory put on the firearm and it is still unfired since leaving the factory

I bought a CZ 453 not too long ago that has beautiful walnut and quality steel. They still make some but I don't think the newer model is as good according to things I've read.

Leather.
We can't forget leather.
Blued steel and walnut goes better with leather.

Definitely a different quality sound when one pumps the action on a old Winchester Model 12 or Model 14/141 Remington gun. Love the old forged pieces from long ago. They should be worth more than they sell for on the used gun market for sure!
